Might be nice to have. Perhaps maybe keep it members only?

Do it. Just open up a thread in the Mechanical/Troubleshooting section - it doesn't have to be it's own subforum.

I think it might be a bit much for one thread because of all the different programs and methods, but I could be wrong.

JR,

you don't think Coding in itself should warrant a full subforum?

I know a few coding threads have been a bit scattered around the forum. ie LCM Coding, the MK60 LSD coding, DIY Speedo, Coolant. etc

johnrando

I'm certainly willing to consider. I'm just not sure why there would be so many different topics underneath it. Let me look into it though. In the meantime, what would you consider the subtopics under that subforum? A single threaded THREAD wouldn't be enough to capture/find what you are looking for?

I think a sub forum for coding is an awesome idea. Topics within is a good question. Should it be broken down by the applications such as PA Soft, etc. or what?

All for it. I just got the software on my spare laptop this weekend, ordering the cable this week. There seems to be a lot of scattered info around the web on all of this, it'd be nice to have detailed info, esp. w/ the work some of the guys can do on here.

I think that might be too specific Wyatt.

I was thinking maybe two subforums:

-Diagnostics and Repair
-Programming/Coding

Since the amount of coding guys here is rather limited, I think we dont need that many subforums as these forums would be pretty empty..

A subforum wouldn't be necessary if someone is willing to moderate a coding thread and keep it clean with all the links to the threads with good information in it.

This is true. Though I do believe a Subforum is necessary with the two headings you suggested. A thread with links would work well, but the Subforum would allow for growth.

Either way works for me and I'll be sure to contribute as much as I can. I'm sure others that have before, and others who haven't will do so as well.

A sub-forum will definitely allow more freedom in terms of topics. The single thread is solely tied to one person and/or admin/mods. I think if this subforum exist, we may need a single READ First thread anyways to get the ball rolling. There is plenty of old topics scattered around this forum that could be gathered for coding.

Start a thread in Technical and start dumping links in there with desired categories.

Then when the subforum is established, all the hard work is done.

Just wanted to offer up BMW Scanner V1.4 / P.A. Soft to anyone who is interested in purchasing them. I have been ordering them in bulk and reselling them to the general public. Of course to family members there will be no mark up. I just want to give everyone the ability to clear their own codes and make quick changes to their own convenience. I have also quality control and soldered together two sets of pins in order to have them working 100%. Again the reason for this post and not in the for sale thread is so anyone can revisit this and look at it. If interested just PM me.

Does INPA check out the Battery and Ignition is on when you plug in the OBD cable?

I had issues with NCSexpert when DIS was running at the same time. Maybe try it without INPA loaded up?

Hornung418

That's what caused the initial concern. running NCS with all other processes and functions closed, returned a VIN error. Saw that several people had success avoiding the error by opening INPA and then proceeding to load the file.

Tony has got me interested in ISTA/D 3.41+ to run on the computer. It seems to run natively on Windows and do not require a VM like DIS. I am intrigued and looking into the necessary work to get it to work. So Far:

BMW Standard Tools 2.12
EDIABAS 7.xx (included with 2.12)
NCSExpert 4.01 (included with 2.12)
Rheingold ISTA/D 3.41

Currently I am researching how to get BMW standard tools to install properly and NCSexpert 4 to show up in English. Once those are done, I bet Rheingold will work perfectly fine. I will start researching now. I think ISTA/D should be much faster than DIS and it should be fun! :)

There is a good amount to do to get it to remove the tamper dot. You will need to program a EEPROM chip for it and solder it back on the cluster.

Coding nightmare?

From what I have gathered, its not that big of a headache.

The Cluster itself stores the VIN and mileage on a M35080 chip. This chip is non-writable and have to be desoldered and reprogrammed with a R270 programmer or similar. Speedometer diamater and coolant temperature ranges will also need to be calibrated to non-M spec. The DSC lights may need reprogramming to Non-M as well. The Oil Temp should work fine on the latest updated non-M DMEs though!

This still doesn't stop the fact that the redline is 8000rpm and no one has figured out how to enable the warm lights to stop at a desired "redline."

Originally I was planning to do it, but watching this video below, I can't stand seeing the redline at 8000rpm...I guess I could crack open the cluster anyways and put something there to acknowledge the 6800rpm redline?

The reason no one has figured out the RPM lights is because the LEDs are "dumb"; the cluster doesn't control any real logic for those lights. Instead, the MSS54 sends a signal to the cluster that dictates how many lights are enabled. If you can figure out what the CAN message looks like, you may be able to replicate a message that constantly keeps the 6500 and 7000RPM LEDs on.

The lights are oil temp related, but it has nothing to do with the gauge itself. All the logic is handled on the DME. You can manipulate the gauge all you want, but the lights won't work without the appropriate signal from the DME.

You can hardwire the LEDs with a little soldering

This is an interesting concept. I didn't know there was such a thing as a BT obd2 adapter.
After searching around a little, I see there are much cheaper versions of basically the same thing minus the app and those specific features Automatic has. I might pick one of these generic adapters up for $10 and this app for $5 and give it a try:

Nice that it's BT, but for $40 less, and a bit more bulky and wired, ultragauge can provide detailed real time engine data such as coolant temp, etc (with alarms !) , in addition to what Automatic app/dongle does (minus the crash alert thing, which IS nice), and it doesn't tie up your iphone in anyway, which I personally prefer. And the Ultragauge has a real display, and you don't have to look at your phone screen, which can be left alone for its main intended functions.

Messed around with Torque Pro and a 9$ ebay bluetooth obd2 adapter, very cool gadget for a total of $14:

And this is the track recorder plugin recording a short drive:

It's like a combination of the car and phone inputs and a video recording from the phone. It's as customizable as torque itself, so you can put whatever gauges around the screen you want. I don't show it in the video, but there is also the option to have a map overlayed and your gps position shown on the map. I deleted the audio, but it does use the phone's mic to record as well.
I imagine this would be a really great thing to have when tracking down a specific problem while driving. I could simply record a drive and catch the problem visually with sensor data and share it with anyone as if they were sitting there watching my gauges. You can really see how the coolant temp fluctuates depending on what you're doing!

Thanks. So, it's a Torque plug-in? Free or fee?

There is a torque lite app, which is free, but I don't think you can install plugins. The Torque Pro app is $5 and you can install plugins made by anyone. The track recorder plugin is made by the same guy who made Torque and it's free. Here's a list of the plugins with links to the play store: http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Plugins

Torque Pro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque

I saw this on another forum. It seemed to be for e46s but I am not sure what program this is from. If it can get rid of the legal page on my nav screen I really want to do this! Anyone know?

Module: GT
Field: LAENDERVARIANTE_GT
Value: ece
Purpose: Remove the annoying legal "accept" screen on nav start up.

Ncsexpert would be the right program to do this.

It's very powerful and also very dangerous if used wrong :)

Is there a setting in PA Soft for the driver's side window to auto-down after a double click on the key fob (to unlock)? I may have accidentally set this. It starts to roll down when I open the door after a double-tap then goes back up when the door is closed. Or do I have a ghost??

I guess I'm glad it's not just me :dunno
Known issue or erroneous coding? Anyone know a fix? (Or just be careful to only unlock once?? I can see this being an issue with a window covered with snow or ice...

There is a setting, but I'm not sure what it would be called in PASoft. Normally it's only meant as an optional feature for coupes (helps open the door in tight quarters)

IMO it's less dangerous than PASoft. NCS can reset any module to its defaults. PASoft can't.

I'll have to play around with some of the settings in PA soft. If anybody else knows which one it is please let me know.

For weird anomalies, I tend to just reset a module to factory defaults with NCS Expert using Expert Mode and recode the desired features afterwards with the custom profile. Always works like a charm.

I agree with reseting the module with an empty MAN file. I keep a list of my settings on google drive for this very reason.

Can't do this with PA Soft?

I'm not sure if this is possible. The way NCSexpert does it, it refers to the DATEN files to revert back to default settings from the factory.

i would also like to know. i never got it running under Windows 7/8/8.1 x64, but never really spent a ton of time on it - the USB drivers installed but then PASoft never recognized them.

i have an old IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop (running XP) that i use for PASoft. it's 10 years old but sadly has better battery life (2hrs on an old 9-cell battery) than my 5-year old lenovo T410 (now running Windows 10 - on battery it lasts about 30min, despite several battery 'restore' procedures).

Tony,
PM sent. Payment sent. Pls check your PMs and confirm receipt.
Thanks,
John
