Hi - I am thinking of getting 18x8.5 (square) et 35 CHs for my ZHP, probably with 225/40tires. Tirerack says these may rub without fender rolling. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions? TIA.

p.s. I tried searching but came up with ZERO results.

Lots of people run a 18x8.5 square set-up with an offset between 35-40. However they have a wider tire size then 225. A fender roll would be ideal on the rear quarter panels with a 245 width tire.

Personally I would not run a square set-up with a 225 width tire on all 4 corners.

plug the numbers into http://www.willtheyfit.com
(front is 18.4, rear is 12 mm wider than stock - borderline?)

Why would you not run a square 225 set up? Tire stretch? Im hoping to not roll my fenders. I do plan on installing bilstein coils, not sure if that may give me more options since Id be able to adjust the ride height.

Oh nice, thats a great thing to have in your back pocket.

I'd want more rubber than 225.

Not gonna rub. On those... I'd throw 245's on them.

I ran 18x8.5+40 and 255 tires. I required rolling the fenders to stop rubbing in the rear.

Fixed.

He wants to put on Bilstein coils though, which will make that setup rub with wider tires.

Lower offset would push the wheel outward more and would rub even worse than the +40. Of course I am speaking about lowered suspension.

This was my clearance on the 18x8.5+40 and 255/35/18 tires in the rear.

225 is just not alot of rubber on the rear considering the fact that the car came with 255.

I would do a square set-up of 245 all around.

BTW why dont you want to roll the fenders?

Im just not thrilled with the idea of rolling the fenders. I'd rather just buy a set of wheels that fit/dont rub without having to roll the fender.

Right. I have +40's with 235's....no rugby.

But I have an 8" rim too.

I think he'd be fine on stock Springs. Maybe not :dunno

I think he will be okay on stock suspension. There is more than enough room for that.

While I'm on stock, you guys can send me a set of CHs to test. I don't mind.

The rim width, offset and tire choice will determine whether you rub or not. Also you can't just verify it on a stationary car. Weight and road conditions can create rubbing conditions. I recently mounted 18x8.5 et35 wheels with 245/35 rubber on all four corners. No rubbing until, I put one 180lb guy in the back seat. Then the rears rubbed on certain road bumps. This is on a 70k stock suspension. There are witness marks on both rear tires. I plan to roll my rear fenders this weekend. If you have access to the proper tool, rolling fenders is no big deal. Many tire shops have them these days. Unbolt the wheel. Bolt up the tool. Heat the fender (it's still only 50 degrees here) and the slowly roll the fender. A little bit at a time. Takes about 10 min per side tops.

225's are more than plenty for the amount of power this car produces. It's kind of weak for its weight, honestly.
My 225's all around in my winter setup has PLENTY of grip. And that's with winter tires.

Even though the circumference and overall diameter is close to each other, the actual width of a 225 will be smaller. Not saying that a 225 will not provide enough grip. But going from a 255 to a 225 IMO is silly.

Plus there will be a good amount of stretch. Guy that is in my office building has a square 225 set-up and it looks akward and weird. I can snap a pic of it tomorrow if I get the chance.

I agree, even if 225 is enough grip I think it'll look too narrow on the rear.

255 looks narrow still. I'm use to staring at an M3 with 275 square :drool

Geeez, how many times do I have to post this!! :rofl

I'm running 18x8.5, ET35, square... I have 245/35-18" tires. The fenders themselves will not rub, ON STOCK SUSPENSION... In the back, you will have to shave the rear fender bolt up in the rear portion of the fender well. If you want to lower, you'll be fine. I'm on H&R springs up front and no rubbing (no rolling either). In the back, I'm on stock springs, but I have 3mm spacers and still no rub. Granted, I rolled the rear fenders, but I did that just so that I could go lower and wider at some point.

As T said, rolling the fenders is no big deal. Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, it's just bending the lip under the wheel well in more than it is... it's not actually bending/pulling the fenders.

Yeah we're talking the same thing, I think my plan is to put 245s on the 18x8.5s and buying some rear camber arms to adjust camber and buy room that way. If I still have to roll the fenders than so be it. I have a rolling tool and access to a full shop so I might as well.

Honestly man, I rolled my fenders and still had the slightest of rub. It wasn't the rolling that helped, it was that stupid little stud that sticks into the rear fender well, the one for the rear bumper... I'll have my rear wheels off today, I'll take a pic of what I did so you can see... THAT little trim job is what did the trick for me...

Here's a pic of the trimming of the rear fender bolt that cured the little rub I had...

What kind of rubbing?? The kind that makes a rubbing noise?!? Tire on fender??? Not sure how to answer that one...

Rubbing while driving normal around town? Rubbing while pushing the car in turns? Rubbing on bumps/dips in the road? Rubbing on speed bumps? Rubbing while accelerating? Rubbing w/ backseat passengers?

Ahh ok, sorry. :facepalm I could only make it rub when I laid the car into a roundabout here in town with a little aggression. The roads in South FL are all flat and straight, so really very little chance to make it rub. That was the only time I made it rub...

Ah, good point. I'm just trying to get an idea of what will eliminate mine. Hoping I can get rid of it by grinding down the bolt, but I have a feeling I need a fender roll to go with it

JupiterBMW

I did the fender roll too, but the bolt shaving is what really did it for me.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I ordered a set of 235-40-18 tires to go on the CHs, which are currently being refinished. I received the coils and the camber arms so once i get the wheels back, mount the tires and throw the suspension on, I should be posting some pics
