How much should I expect to pay an Indy (former BMW Tech) to do my vanos seals?

$500+ for Dr.Vanos

Why not just call them and ask? You can get a better answer directly from them, rather than us guessing.

Vanos seals are not bad to DIY. Lengthy process but not complicated.

OP, why do you think you need to do the vanos seals?

Do shops even do vanos seals? I thought the seals are not a serviceable part. Some shops won't use parts supply by the customer. If you go this route, make sure that mechanic has experience doing these seals.

I'm sure a couple of us nor-cal folk could knock this out for cheap. I'd take some beer since I've never done it before but comfortable enough with a wrench. The M3 goes under the knife starting Monday for the vanos procedure.

Assuming this is M54, I could do it, too.

Oh. Well that's good to know. I don't have much mechanical experience or a place to actually work on the car. Very unfortunate.

I have read that the seals need replacing periodically and new ones make a noticeable difference. I can't tell if I need it by the performance right now but maybe I wouldn't realize until it was done. I have almost 100k now.

See now we have enough for a party.

Parts are around $160.00 (including the anti-rattle kit) and it's about a 4 hour job for a seasoned vanos tech (:rofl), so I would say $50 and hour (split dealer rate in half roughly since the guy looks like he's working on the side). That would be about $360 parts/labor.

I do them for the good company, discussion, beer and pizza.

Ok see you on Saturday. Pizza will be waiting. ;)

Are you driving up? You have the parts?

I wish... :) I am either going to have my Indy do it or have a BMW tech help me do it on the side.

A great time to change your VCG, by the way.

OP here. Have 205,000 miles, significant loss of power between 2,000 and 3,000. Loud growling noise (precisely the symptoms that Dr. Vanos site describes).

My Indy said $600 all in and I though that was a bit high.

For Dr. Vanos that sounds about right.

$600 is not outrageous from a qualified Indy but for a DIY job, it's a lot. And it would seem you could find it for cheaper, but I asked an Indy once and he quoted me that. I did mine with Gary at my house.

VANOS replacement is soooooo easy guys. Why pay anyone? If you really want it easy I can send you an already built VANOS like dr vanos but cheaper and no deposit. I think I have one ready to go. At that point it is merely plug and play.

He ain't lying! :) But understandable if someone doesn't have the set up to do this, but it's REALLY straightforward, even for a non mechanic so definitely consider DIY if you can - or take Smolck up on his offer.

Yep. $160 + 6 hours time (first time).

Very straight forward closely following the Beisan procedure.

Some guys may not have access to a shop/tools though.

I understand not having the space and it is still cold outside in a lot of the country. But as for tools, you could buy what you need for less than $30 at harbor freight

Except for the pneumatic side of the house for the anti rattle kit install (which isn't always necessary).

Hey folks, I'm glad ZHPESQ asked his question.
Thanks everybody.

Are we having a maintenance day at the reunion in May? He could come there and we could help him.
