Hey,

I'm looking for a roof rack, it can be OEM or aftermarket.

I'll eventually also need a road bike rack for it as well.

I'm located in Central Pa, I don't mind driving to pick it up but if it's too far I'll entertain the ideal of paying for shipping. So let me know what you have and where you're located. :)

This is what I have. Not in perfect condition, but fully functional. You're far away so I'll leave it here as a backup.

Keep in mind that with OEM roof racks you may have to use OEM accessories (for bikes / skis & snowboards / kayaks / etc.), which may be more expensive and limited than aftermarket options.

I thought I could toss on other brand mounts to the rack? :(

You can if they can clamp around fat BMW/Audi/Mini style OEM roof rack bars. Some can, some can't.

I have the OEM base system in great shape but no bike rack, only the old style BMW snowboard rack. And I'm in California so it's a ways to ship, but let me know if interested.

Looking to potentially purchase a set of bars as well. I won't need any attachments as I'd just be using the bars for ladders, wood, etc... I need to make a truck outta my ZHP on occasion... Would be nice if I could use roof bars to do so...

Anyone have any input on this? Or am I being ridiculous in my thoughts?!

Perfectly logical of course.

Make a truck out of a performance, BMW, sedan.

I'm in!

ha! me too! as my 1-car-for-the-family rule still stands, the lone car has to do all - and that does include lumber runs, long family trips, etc.

fortunately my sedan does not have the CD changer-prep package, so the trunk has more space, and i scored a roof rack from a 'mafia member as well as a brand new thule roof carrier locally for about 20% of the new cost! i plan to make a plywood 'lumber rack' for the thule load bars. however, keep in mind the roof weight limit is only 165lbs, i think.

it would be awesome to be able to carry 3 wheels/tires on the 'lumber rack' too!

Yeah at most I'll use it for a few pieces of wood/molding/2x4s from Home Depot, a ladder, and an occasional other large item that will fit up there. I won't keep it installed on my car, would just like to have the ability shall I need it.

I saw a few threads on people using the nicer looking (and more readily available) e90 rails on the e46. There are several sets on my local CL for under 100 bucks brand new.

Bump!

Should I go OEM e46 or aftermarket. I looked up how to install e90 but I don't feel like hacking stuff up.

Go with an oem rack. I just bought one and installed it on the wife's zhp.

$130 before shipping for BMW Base Support System for Coupes, Sedans and M3. Then get any attachment s you might need or just strap stuff to the cross bars.

Wow I was just in Morristown NJ this past weekend for then Gran Fondo NJ Bike ride, lol.
However, shipping is only $11.22. So I'm going to order it!

They don't seem to have a road bike holder though.

I'm thinking I'll go with this BMW 82722326514 (http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Bike/ES2644050/) carrier.
Since I'm not sure which Thule carrier would be best for my application.

I can't seem to find any generic fairings, would it be wrong for me to use a Thule fairing if I have BMW rack and carrier? LOL

Vas

Not at all. I am going to order a Thule 38" fairing. That is the correct size iirc.

I have OE bars and have two Thule fork mount racks on it. They fit, but I had to get a little creative. I haven't, but probably should put washers in the channel where the front is mounted. The square bolt heads to hold the rack to the bar are smaller than the OE channel so they probably dont have quite so much contact as they probably should. Also, the Thule bolts for attaching the back are too short (the thule aero bars are thinner) so I just grabbed a couple of bolts from Lowes, washers and lock nuts and made it work.
