View Full Version : Fuel pump noise?

Should I be able to hear my fuel pump whizzing/running at all when I stand next to the car? It seems oddly loud. I don't remember the fuel pump on my last 330i making any noise, but you can hear this one from a few feet away, which is what drew me to it. Makes me wonder since a bad fuel pump was suggested in the below thread regarding lack of power/dead spot at take off and slight hesitations around 3k-4k rpm, Perhaps stemming from the lean codes I got when my service engine soon light came on. Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance

sounds like you probably have a bad fuel pump. Mine started whining sometimes when it was dying, but since I changed it, its been totally silent. If you're on the original fuel pump, it can't hurt to change it. Costs about $125, takes under an hour, and is a lot easier and cheaper than waiting until it totally fails to change it.

Bummer... I replaced the one on my last 330i, it was super easy, just pull up the rear seat and there you are. I've already looked around at prices, found a few for right around $100, more $$ down the tubes!

I've been hunting down my idle and stuttering problems. Still can't figure it out. My fuel pump makes no noise at all, but it could still be an issue.
Hope you figure it out.

Mine started doing the same thing recently. I can hear it standing beside the car; its kind of embarrassing, the car used to purr nicely and now it whines. I already knew it was the fuel pump but I thought I'd wait until other symptoms appear.... is that a bad idea? I'm going to do the cooling refresh next week (hopefully), if the pump is easy to get to I guess I could go ahead and replace it. Anyone have any thoughts?

It can't hurt to replace it before it fails. When it does, you'll be stranded and the cost of a tow will be almost equal to the price of the pump. Its a super easy job, a 2/10

If you have low fuel in the tank it may amplify the noise. Just a guess. But I would definitely replace it if it's starting to whine. I'm at 126K miles and mine is starting to whine.

So do you just pull the old assembly out and drop in the new one?

Yep. I usually buy a new rubber gasket too, but it is no harder than that. Note on install, a lot of folks put the rubber ring on the pump and then try and drop it in place, it won't work that way. Install the rubber ring first, then push the pump into it. Buy a hose clamp for 3/8 hose because the feed hose has one of those idiotic one time use clamps that you will destroy while removing.
Lastly, make SURE you start your car and then pull the #54 fuse while it is RUNNING, let the car die on it's own. This way it will ensure the least amount of gas in your face when you remove the hose.

Thanks for this advice. I'm at 110k and in pretty sure my OE fuel pump is its way out. Do you know the part number for the rubber gasket off hand?

Thanks for the advice. I'm only at 75k so a little miffed at the fuel pump going, but at least its easily accessible.
