Only in Austin. Strange, some days ago I posted a coupe with similar characteristics:

According to the vin decoder it is an actual ZHP (M-sport maybe) car produced in 2003.

My guess would be it was in a front end accident and had parts replaced with pre-facelift stuff.

can someone explain to a newbie what this "prefacelift" term means? I understand the wheels and the shift knob aren't original. I understand how the VIN decoder works where it shows that it has the performance package...where am I getting lost?

That's what I'd guess, too.

The "face-lift" is a mid-generation looks refresh that BMW commonly does on its cars. Compare the front-ends (especially the headlights)...

All ZHP and post 2002 sedans are facelifted. If you look at the early e46s you can see what were on about. The pre facelift cars have the droopy headlights as apposed to the ones the ZHP should have. Also on a pre facelift the kidneys are a different shape and smaller. This ZHP or any post 2002 sedan should not have any of these features. Coupes were facelifted in 03 if I recall correctly and the ZHP version was introduced in 04.

Coupe was refreshed for the 04 model year. It followed the LCI of the M3. Has the LED tails that the M3 received midway through the 2003 model year.

Anyways, this is what I wished my 328i Looked like. But I opted to replace the hood but leave the fenders and lights. I'm currently in the process of a part out.

Oooh, is this a WTF? thread?

Because, WTF? (http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/4340498500.html)

Regular 330Cic nose, sport wheels and ... is that silver cube trim? I thought that was reserved only for ZHPs.

Unfortunately, I can't read the plate in the last photo to run a Carfax and get the VIN ...

Also, looks like the tach cuts off at 7k.

It's just so WTF? though, I'm baffled. Anyone who knows anything about the ZHP's features would recognize this one wasn't in an instant. So is the owner staggeringly ignorant of what they've actually got or just hoping to find a sucker who is cripplingly naive?

Lots of confusing/incorrect information here... Lemme see if I can help sort some stuff out for any newer members that may be unsure... Firstly, the car in the original post is a ZHP. It not only has all of the correct markings for a ZHP (minus the pre-facelift front lights) and it is registered as such on the ZHP registry. Granted, there have been incorrect entries in the past. A cross check of the VIN on a decoder shows that the car does in fact have the S767A package (Performance package), and that the car was slated for the USA market, so it is a true USA ZHP. As well, other things to look for, the red gauge needles, the 6800 RPM redline, and the full alcantara interior. It also has the cube trim, and the style 135 wheels. These indicators are all good ZHP indicators. The fact that the front end is different simply states front end collision, repaired by a moron, or perhaps someone that just preferred the pre-facelift look. But, the latter reason is highly unlikely. An enthusiast would probably not do this, and a non-enthusiast would most likely not know the difference. That being said, I'm guessing the repair was done by a sleazy/lousy body shop that either didn't know any better or was trying to save money. Ok, so it IS a ZHP... Let's get into the individual replies and hopefully clear some stuff up.

can someone explain to a newbie what this "prefacelift" term means? I understand the wheels and the shift knob aren't original. I understand how the VIN decoder works where it shows that it has the performance package...where am I getting lost?

Pre-facelift or pre-LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) refers to a refreshening of the vehicle's look, about mid way through that generation. Typically, each generation is run for about 6 years, the LCI coming out after 3 of those years. It seems that BMW does the LCI (facelift) on the sedans one year earlier than the coupes/verts. This is why the ZHP sedan was released in 2003 and the Coupe/vert in '04. Also, this is why the last year of the ZHP sedan is 2005, but the ZHP coupes/verts can be had in 2006 model years. As for the car in the original post, it checks out as a 2004 model. ZHP registry shows a build date of 2/25/04, but the VIN decoder shows 07/11/03. The sticker on the door shows 11/03... So, safe to say its a 2004 model. The wheels are 'OEM'. They are the original ZHP Style 135M wheels. Were the chromed or polished? Who knows... In fact, that is one thing I'm unsure of... Not sure if its an aftermarket or was an OEM option... But, those are the original ZHP style wheels. The shift knob isn't original, appears to be an M3 knob (taller)... They get changed out all the time though, most likely the previous owner was a woman that wore rings, they do a number on steering wheels and shift knobs...

Yes, this... Granted, the facelift sedan looks different than the coupe. The pic in my sig shows a facelift sedan.

...Coupes were facelifted in 03 if I recall correctly and the ZHP version was introduced in 04.
Not exactly. The coupe was face lifted in 2004 and the sedan in 2003. The ZHP sedan was introduced in 2003, the ZHP coupe/vert in 2004. You were close, just backwards. :biggrin

Zactly! The sedan tails changed too, but not to LED, still remained regular filament bulb types.

That is not silver cube... Its the regular brushed aluminum, available on non-ZHP cars, which this one is in fact... a standard sport package '04 vert, and a nice looking one at that!

Also it doesn't have the M steering wheel.

Why are you guys telling him he doesn't have a ZHP? The VIN shows ZHP.

...and it's not a vert.

The guy sounds like he doesn't "care/believe what you are telling him" because you're telling him his 4-door vert isn't a zhp when it most certainly is, and he thinks you're high.

The black Austin car is a ZHP that's got a sketchy history. BMW says the VIN has ZHP package. Autocheck shows 1 accident but a clean title. But as mentioned by others the car isn't right. It did not come from BMW in its current form. Be careful with this one.

Yeah...sorry, wasn't referring to the OP ZHP...which is silly that they went with the prefacelift to begin with.

Someone posted a Craigslist ad for a ZHP vert that was clearly just an e46 w/ ZSP ZPP.

Lots of good info here and I thought the same thing when I saw it - front end collision repaired w/ the wrong fenders, hood, signals, etc.

One correction though - the sedan facelift was 2002, not 2003.
