Why did it have to be an SMG....
So close.....

Fantastic looking car. I'd have snapped it up in a heartbeat if it were for sale last summer.

If I were in the market for another ///M this would be very tempting...

I'd still take it with an SMG. One thing a lot of people don't realize is that only the people who have problems complain. I've seen a few poll threads, and most M3 owners (over 70%, if I recall) had never had issues with their SMG.

True dat! That is why when I have a good experience now days I try to do something positive for whatever business or product it was.

Its not that I'm expecting problems from the SMG transmission, it's just not the same raw experience that you get with a manual. It's all preference.

I am sure I would not hate the smg but in the back of my mind, I would be wishing for a manual
If you could deal with SMG it is great for owning an M because SMG prices are well below manual prices for the same car. I stayed away because of the horror stories that probably are inflated and I wanted to row my own gears.

Honestly, I would be fine with the SMG... But, and I'm sure I'm alone here, I don't dig the cinnamon... I'd prefer something closer to our Natural Brown...

Joop, I think ur right on that. Cinn is a popular color.

I did a bunch of research into the E46 SMG.
First of all, the issues are exaggerated. Secondly, an E60 M5 SMG pump can be swapped in, and that one has no issues at all (ie. permanent fix). Lastly, converting SMG to 6-speed is something like a $1000 expense. I drove numerous E46 M3 SMGs and have to say I liked them. I wouldn't hesitate to get an SMG.

I like cinn because well that's as close as you get to natural brown with an M3. It does look super sexy on some colors, but for white I love natural brown. I saw LSB seats for the first time the other day and they looked cool, but not something I could look at daily. I'd love to have a set of the ///M fabric/alcantara seats.

Wow I wonder what is different from an M5 pump vs M3. :) I feel at peace getting an SMG if that's what comes along for me. I've had close to 10 years of great manual driving and I enjoyed it on every gear accept the ones that I grinded on. LOL.

You realize the E60 M5 pump is almost $3k, right? And from what I understand, it's not plug and play - some modification is required. Also, the pump is definitely not immune to failure. It might be more durable than the M3 variant, but the M5s do experience failures too

Terra I want to buy an M3 near you so you can have a look at it and say yay or nay... And after all the car stuff and going out for a good ride in your M3...I can road trip home with a grin on my face knowing that I got an M3 approved by Terra!! I'm going to be out in Detroit, MI in two weeks...maybe I can find a good eastern M3!!

As much as I agree Joop, Sean is right....this is as close to NB as you will get when running with an ///M unfortunately....
Lsb plus cinnamon is awesome

Vas, personally I prefer carbon black with cinnamon.... I think the contrast is just right....
I also kinda like AW with cinnamon but that's because you can't get NB with the ///M.....
Carbon black would be nice too. I'm just not a fan of smg cars after driving a couple and white does nothing for me.

Yeah I know you can't get NB in the ///M, I was just saying, cinnamon isn't quite right for me. Besides, the ///M is missing two doors, so I'll never bother owning one anyway...
Of course, if we're talking E90 ///M, then that's another story. Besides...

I've read that the failure of these pumps within M5 is next to none. As for the cost, you'll be saving pretty much the same amount by buying the SMG instead of 6-speed in the first place. But yeah, if that's the cost (I haven't looked into it), it's pretty pricy, and I would just do the 6-speed conversion for a fraction of that.

SMGs can be coded to run the CSL transmission software. Quicker shifts and blazingly fast 0-60 times even with out the power bump.
