Well, as most of you know, my wife and I ran to the end of the finance on the X3, so it was time to replace it. We were tempted with keeping it, but decided to trade it instead. Our payment got a little bit smaller, and the 4 yrs/50,000 mile maintenance was already 2 years in on the X3, and while it only had 15K miles, it needed 2 tires. In addition, I was starting to see some wear on the Oyster interior. Without constant detail, that interior will be tough to keep pristine... With two growing little ones, that made me a touch nervous...

So, after much deliberation, we ended up with the following... I know, its NOT at all what many of you expected, and at first I was a little bummed by not getting an M-sport car, but we both really like this one, and for the financial savings, we're really happy. Not to mention, they made us a KILLER deal... I spent all day yesterday at the dealer, but in the end, we were happy.

2014 BMW 328d Diesel Sedan
Mineral White Metallic/Saddle Brown Dakota Leather/Burled Walnut Trim
Luxury Line
Premium Package
Driver Assistance Package
Heated Front Seats
Navigation
Moonroof

We initially made a pretty good deal on a similar 328d that was essentially a stripped model, having only Navigation (Alpine white/beige)... But, I went back at them with the final curve ball that I wanted the same deal on this car instead... They went for it (last day of the month mentality)...

Anyway, onto the pics...

Very nice. Love that interior and simply can't understand why you can't get it with the msport package.

I've been curious about the BMW select balloon payment. Did BMW take the x3 back without a liability on your end? When I wanted to get my 335xi through that program the salesman told me it never works out well at the end and people are always very upside down.

We've only put about 50 miles on the clock, all around town, but so far quite nice. Drives beautifully thus far!

Nice, Joop! It is certainly a pretty car!
Thanks Belvin!

Beautiful Bimmer! Congrats to you both. Keep us all posted how you enjoy the diesel, as I imagine that the diesel torque will be fun.
Its not too shabby! The official numbers on the 4 cylinder diesel are 180HP/280TQ. So, its not a rocket for sure, but it definitely gets out of its own way. Although, kicking it into sport mode really wakens this one... I didn't feel as much difference in the X3.

Very nice acquisition Joop!

Thanks guys!

Does it sound like a diesel or have they done a good job of quieting the engine?
It does have the diesel rumble for sure, but you really don't notice it while driving. The cabin noise is exceptionally low. It kind of makes me chuckle to hear the diesel rattle out of such an elegant looking car.

Nice!
Thanks!

Smoking hot interior. Just love that colour!
Agreed... And even though the car isn't 100% ideal, I went with it because I couldn't deny the color combo and the deal we got...

Congrats to Mrs. Joop! That is a sweet looking ride. Are plates required to drive off of the dealer lot in Florida?
Thanks Jay! In Florida, plates belong to the person, so when you trade a vehicle in, the plates just get swapped right over. No need to wait for anything. But, for a new purchase without existing transfer plates, you don't have to wait. They print you some sort of temp plate...

Nice to have that done. Congrats Joop!
Agreed, we were running out of time and if we waited, they would've pulled this deal out from under us.

Congrats! I'm sure she will love it. I like the idea of a diesel.
Heh, me too. Driving it like an idiot in sport mode and I was still getting 25+ mpg. I can't wait to get it on the highway and go for a drive...

Thanks gents!!

Jon, I know you'll be careful when putting in car seats. Make sure you put a towel or some other padding underneath. My car has a couple of boo-boos from the previous owner.
Absolutely... They make mats (which actually have nice, non stick bottoms on them) exactly for car seats... So we use those. Also, a nice feature in this new car is that there are actual cut outs with little plastic doors that cover the LATCH anchors. In the X3 you had to hunt for them in the crack between the back/bottom cushions. As a result, there were little wrinkles on the seat back when I pulled the car seat. That won't happen with this one!

Congrats, Joop. Best of luck with her.

Beautiful ride.
Thanks Keith!

Jon, is it me or do the side bolsters are adjustable? It looks like the the pic is showing a difference between driver's and passenger's side bolster positions.
I don't believe there is bolster adjustment, just lumbar... I will have to check again! My wife won't let me drive it very much... :P

Very very nice! Diesel is great. Looks gorgeous!

Is power less than yours?
The numbers I posted above would make you think its quite slow, but it really isn't. I think its quicker than the ZHP, but not as fast as the X3 we traded in...

Very nice. Love that interior and simply can't understand why you can't get it with the msport package.

I know, I wanted an M-sport as well, but we had to make something happen right away as our balloon finance on the X3 was up on Monday. I can explain it more detail, but on the phone. It'd be a lot to type. As for the X3, yes, they took it back and covered the balance owned. Did we make any money on the deal? No... Had I sold it privately, I could've made 5K or so. I received quite a few calls on it when it was listed at $39,500. We owed $33,550. So, I'd say your salesman was wrong... But, you do have to be smart about it to make it work out.

Cool enjoy
Thanks Jon!

Waiting on build thread. :foottap
I actually wasn't sure if I should create a build thread, or just this one... This might become a build thread. We'll see... So far, the only thing we're thinking about is tinting it and perhaps shopping for some wheels.

You know Jon, I really can't comment on that just yet. I haven't had much seat time in the 328d just yet... I would be willing to say that the two are pretty close. With the Dinan mods I've done, I'd say that my car might edge out the 328d just a bit, but its really hard to say. I need to drive her car a bit more first.

Haha... To be honest, I initially brought home a different 328d (the dealer let me take one home for a few hours to check it out with Ayren) and when we took it for a drive around the neighborhood, she ROMPED on it... I was pretty surprised... Her first comment was "well, its not as fast as my X3, but its ok..."

Then I put it in Sport mode and she did it again. She was happy with that! :biggrin

Maybe I'll take it to the gym in the morning and drive it a bit more. :)

I'm not sure about the diesels, but I'm fairly certain that in general you shouldn't romp on it until it's broken in...
There's a very specific set of rules to follow for proper break-in.

I couldn't find the original article I wanted to find but this post on another BMW forum sums it up pretty well (applies to diesels as well):

"You know, I really have to say that there is a lot of difference of opinion regarding the damage bad break-in does or doesn't do. I am of the school that break in is very important for the long-term health of an engine, but, it really is more of a statistical thing than black and white -- it changes the odds but doesn't guarantee success or failure of the engine long term.

It is often amazing the abuse engines will take and how they will continue to run, even when the wrong thing is done. Case in point. I had a friend with a 4 cylinder engine that had such a bad head gasket leak, the cylinder filled with antifreeze while being started in the Winterhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/lb_icon1.png (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=410229#), hydro locked, and broke the starter gear. When I drained the oil, there must of been at least a quart of antifreeze in the oil. By all rights, the engine should have been shot. She didn't have the money for a new car or re-built engine, so I did a long-shot cheap (free labor) repair of just replacing the head gasket/bolts and flushing the engine. Guess what, the darn thing is still running well after 3 years and 34,000 miles! Go figure.

Anyway, back to topic. The entire point of break-in is to lets the parts themselves do the finalhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/lb_icon1.png (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=410229#) "machining" and wear themselves into the best possible fit/mating. As machining technology gets better and better, break-in becomes less important... but final "wear-in" is still important. You want to wear down the high-points (on a microscopic scale) without doing it so fast or long that your generate localized heat which causes a "microweld/micro galling," leaving a micro pit or bump. As such, short bursts toward redline actually will help "wear-in" the parts, e.g., accelerate for a couple of seconds and then back off. What hurts during break-in are either sustained running at high speed/load, or running at a constant load/speed for a sustained period of time. With different speeds and loads, different areas (again on a microscopic level), tend to be the "high spots."

When I talk of hitting redline, I'm talking of a very short burst of the engine while it is not under load, e.g., a throttle "blip" in neutral. The "couple of seconds acceleration" I mention is under load while driving and should not ever be near the redline of the engine while breaking it in.

Think of it as trying to hone the parts together as you would sharpen a knife, with the varying speeds and loads as moving the knife to different angles.

Understanding what you are trying to do is more important than slavishly following the rules ("Gee, I just hit 500 miles so I can nail it!). Think of the first 1,000 miles as being similar to a ten minute "limbering up" prior to exercise... start easy the first few miles and gradually work up to normal running over the first 1,000.

WIll disaster come if you don't do this? Probably not. But doing it will increase the odds that you have a trouble free engine that goes 200,000 miles, vs. one that has a bearing problem at 75,000 - 100,000.

Hope this helps."

JupiterBMW
02-04-2014, 11:05 AM
Yep, very familiar with engine break in... I'm not talking about a ton of hard driving, mostly just spirited runs through the gears. And there were already 100 miles on the car when we bought it, so who knows what that was like. The car will be fine for sure.

Well, stopped at the dealer today to pick up a small part for the ZHP and look what I saw... Not only is she ready for a new owner, but she's up on the featured spot, usually a place only the new cars get to go (the other side has a similar feature spot with an M6 Competition in it). I miss the X3 a bit, but the 328d is a great vehicle and the smaller payment makes me happy. And the fuel economy is so much better!

Just an interesting pic. The 328d has 'EcoPro' mode and the other night the lady and I were driving home from being downtown. We rarely get on the highway for any real distance so I felt it would be a good time to test out EcoPro... Here's a shot of the gauge cluster, very different from what we're all used to seeing in our ZHPs. Under the tach, you get the charging/power indicator, telling you whether or not you're being good or not. Also, in the center, the blue "range" indicator is actually an estimate of how many miles of range you've gained by driving conscientiously. In the 20 miles or so on the highway, I gained about 3.8 miles of range, and it was up to 5 miles by the time we got home (another 5-7 miles total). That was with cruise set at 72 on the highway. Super impressive!

Heck, we've got about 750 miles on it now, and we've only filled the tank once, and there's still almost 1/2 tank on the second fill. I love it!

Anyway, just thought I'd post something interesting in this thread.

Honestly, I think it basically just says "charging" because the alternator is still doing work (energy output), but without any energy input (fuel usage)... So, basically, I think they've kind of claimed it to be "free energy" which we all know isn't possible. But anyway, yes, the calculations are such that I have to drive roughly 42K miles for the extra cost of fuel/the vehicle to even out with the fuel economy savings. Of course, I'm sure those numbers are comparing diesel vs. regular gas, so the mileage would be less when compared to a vehicle that otherwise would consume premium fuel.

Yeah, my bad... I relocated some photo bucket albums... Should be good now.

The car drives great and just instills a sense of calm and easy driving. I think its the really low revs... It doesn't rev all that high, and ALL the torque is pretty much there the minute you let off the brake, so there's no need to slam the pedal down, as it doesn't really help... I enjoy it.

As for color, I just like the metallic of the mineral white... Actually, I need to line up the cars and check this out again. The first time I had them in the garage together, I noticed they looked VERY similarly sized. The interior of the F30 feels bigger for sure... I do love the interior color... Both are similar but still different. The newer interior of course looks nicer, but not having sport seats is a small drawback... Not THAT big of a deal though, they're still plenty comfy... :)

You like the iDrive? It looks much easier and more intuitive then the early versions lol.

Yes absolutely... The latest generation has much quicker response time, and there is a lot more information on the maps... We don't use the trackpad much, but it does work very well... And yes, its better than even the version we had in the 2012 X3...

That's the problem... The dealers are good at making you believe that you can afford one! :biggrin
