Whenever I'm shopping for parts, or I need quick spec on something (torque, part number, OE brand, etc), I don't really have a place where to ask on the forum.
For example, yesterday I needed to know what voltage our alternator was supposed to output at idle but couldn't find it without Googling for half an hour on my phone. Answer: 14.0V +/- 0.2V on new components and healthy engine.
I've been looking for such a thread forever, but couldn't find one. So here is the random E46/ZHP-related question thread, where repeat questions are welcome and "just google it" isn't the answer.
I'll start:
Do most ZHP's have hydraulic serpentine belt tensioners ? What's the production date cut-off if not ?

The only way to find out is the look for the hydraulic unit. While I am not sure if they came with mechanical or not, I would imagine if any E46 came with a mechanical, they may have changed over to the hydraulic unit. It is likely that many have changed over since many E46s are now pass the cooling maintenance period. It is best to check.

How does one tell its a BOSCH or VALEO without removing any pieces?

To my knowledge, there isn't. The only way I could tell what mine was by pulling it out and looking. Glad I did it while it was out, too.

I don't think there is another part number for ATF. but there is a sticker to affix.

You could reuse the cap and just change out the seal. #32411128333.

I figured maybe cars after x date came with strictly hydraulics, but info on the web does seem fuzzy.

You could reuse the cap and just change out the seal. #32411128333.

Anyone know the approx cost for an indy to do transmission mounts and engine mounts? Yep, I think I can surely DIY it but if it's cheap I might as well have them do it. I'm not really sure if my jack can hold a transmission securely.

Does anyone have a list of grounds and positive connections on the car? Battery isn't charging when car is running. Both alternator and battery less than a year old.

I would take car to local autozone or advance and have both tested. I am guessing a faulty alternator

I have neither in Canada haha. I doubt it's this as it all electronics work perfectly once the car is started and battery voltage doesn't go down. It just measures as 12.3-12.6V at the battery so I figure it's something with the circuit from engine bay to battery.

What spare, the donut? Only the rear style 135 clears the 1er BBK, but that wheel won't fit in your trunk

Use the service menu in the cluster to read the voltage with the engine running. If it's not 14V it's most likely your alternator.

Yup that's how I do it. But if it wasn't putting out enough voltage, my electronics would run off battery, yet this isn't happening... Hence my loose connection hypothesis.

I'm confused. It's reading 12V at the battery and 14V at the cluster?

Alternator will put out 14v to charge, so that's what you're going to see while the car's running.

Nope 12V at both. But the cluster reads off the positive terminal of the battery if I understood correctly.

At the very least it could be the voltage regulator attached to the alternator. A loose connection would be showing some more intermittent issues and frankly some not so friendly ones (i.e such as when you disconnect/connect your neg battery terminal).
Any large chain parts (Napa, Carquest) stores should be able to test your alternator and battery.

Wasn't expecting this. Look right above the label, sorry for the fuzzy pic... VR melted at positive terminal. This could've caught on fire... Avoided one heck of a disaster. Gonna get a warranty replacement. Moving on :)

If I remember, Xenon uses 35W and Halogen uses 55W.
Foglights should be the same as the halogen at 55W unless you guys change it from stock wattage.

They're not nearly as bright and they use more energy than xenon. I was surprised my ZHP didn't come with them as an option.

I'm confused, are you saying your car has halogens?
FYI, halogen was standard on a ZHP and HID was the option but most people ordered it with the option lights

Yes, that's what I mean. And I'm surprised that the options xenons weren't included on the zhp. Lay out an extra $4k for the performance package but not a few hundred for better lights? Just seems weird. Even my "lowly" 325 with just ZPP had xenons.

The xenon option is separate from the packages.

My first ZHP was a halogen car and I hated it. Looking back, I kind of miss it. Light output was fine with upgraded bulbs and I thought the front looked a little cleaner without the projector. Having burnt ZKWs stinks.

It was actually a $700 option. It's not easy to deal with coupe lights so don't retrofit, just try to find a wrecked facelift coupe and swap the assembly complete.
The xenon option is separate from the packages.
BMW CSL doesn't have xenon's if I recall correctly. JP?

I didn't want to do a retrofit because I heard there's computer issues with the DME thinking there's problems.
I'm going to do what MiniD said and get better bulbs and clean lenses. That should help a lot.

Just gotta check off halogens and check xenons on the car with BMW Scanner. There's always a guy in the area advertising coding services, or buy one - they're $25 on ebay.

A lot of times you hear about people bore and stroking their engines to gain power. Why is this never the case on an M54? I don't think I've heard anybody doing that much.
I don't know much about engine internals :(

Probably $$? I'm not sure of the exact costs, but it seems once you get through the cost of machining and new parts, may as well have done the s54 swap and open a whole new door of potential power for the same coin.

Another thing is high rev is severely limited with hydraulic lifters. M54 can't rev that high but we don't need to do valve adjustments constantly.

I'd love to drop in a Yamaha 3.0 or 3.2 that was used in the older Ford SHO's. Those things can be built to rev to 10k reliably. It would be beautiful.

Some of my childhood memories revolve around those engines. My "ex" step-dad used to be the team manager for the Firestone Firehawk series that ran those cars (ran 4 of them decked out in TMNT paint scheme for one year) for several years along with the Ford Probes.

Coolant is the only fluid with that exception, however, I know plenty of people who run green fluids in their cooling with no issues at all. It's not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be.
I went with Valvoline Dex-6 ATF from Reilly. Paid $17 for two quarts, and flushed both of them through the system.

Yes the one I received was OEM. If you type the part number in it isn't the special pricing. You have to click the one for $245 and enter your vin so they can send you the correct part.

If you removed the center around the shifter, I think you could also get it from bottom.

Assume you have biz cd. Push a credit card or something similar in the crack between the vents and top if dash.

^ yeah, I always think I'm going to break the vent or my finger tips. Sliding something under it to pop the connection seemed to work for me last time if I remember correctly. Glad you got it. The aux jack is nice to have.

Now how the hell do I use this thing? I've gone through all the modes and I can't seem to get it to work.

If it's installed correctly, you just go to Aux on the radio. Make sure the iPhone, etc is plugged in and playing :-)

You get there by pressing the mode button right? Doesn't seem to work...

You have an aftermarket DICE kit..thats what. Leave it in core 1.52 and click 1 again and you should be in your playlists.

Wouldn't you have to route it from the trunk though? I don't think the aux cable would be long enough.

If you have the dice media bridge at the front of the car, just plug the aux cable into that. It's a standard 3.5mm plug.
That's what I would do. Obviously every install is different.

I finally got it to work. I ended up taking out the glove box and disconnecting the media bridge. I have no use for this dice unit, so I suppose I'll sell it once I have the time to un-route the cord going to the trunk.

and ZHP is

Why the rear isn't 255/40/17 to keep ratios is beyond me.

Really not sure. I didn't have time to pull them this w/e. I did turn them on in the daylight and looked at each bulb. At night one is definitely dimmer. Looking directly into them they both looked the same. Sound like a burnt bowl?

Too many variables, IMO. Pressure, width discrepancies, groove style, wheel size...

According to my numbers and their calculations, the front wheel on the zsp has a slightly larger contact patch, unexpected. The rear contact patch on the zhp is slightly larger, as expected.

Actually it also even varies from manufacturer specs. :)
Contact patch sometimes measured as tread width but since most contact patches now are more rounded, its hard to say when the actual start of the contact patch is. There is no standard on how to measure tread width. The only thing you can really measure with a standard is section width which is the length from the edge of inner sidewall to the outer sidewall. This doesn't really give you what the contact patch is though..

I would swap the brighter bulb to the other side to confirm it is indeed the bulb. If it isn't, you gotta work a little more and swap ballasts.

P225/50R16 91S
The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 225mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).
225mm / 25.4 = 8.86"
Sidewall Aspect Ratio
Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio.
P225/50R16 91S
The 50 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 50% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 225mm and that its section height is 50% of 225mm. By converting the 225mm to inches (225 / 25.4 = 8.86") and multiplying it by 50% (.50) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 4.43". If this tire were a P225/70R16 size, our calculation would confirm that the size would result in a section height of 6.20", approximately a 1.8-inch taller sidewall.

1. no they are not. have you every seen the inside of a headlight with OEM angels? all you see is the front which are just the fiber optic tubes. in the back, there's a ton more stuff to make it work. there's not enough room in the headlights for it hence why we have the LEDs now that aren't uniform. even the old school ones that tried to mimic it had no where to but the light boxes, so you would have to mount it outside of the headlights.
2. they do have it for euros. we americans are too dumb for it and are too sue happy. they took it out. but you can buy switches and enable it by coding. or modify your switches to do so.
3. no clue. probably involves taking shit apart lol or unless you have your old phone, maybe somehow view the pin on that.
4. i don't think so. i think you need a specific module to enable the functionality.

If you're seeing "SIRIUS", then I'd think you must have the tuner for it. Get the Bluetooth code off the module, not sure where it's buried in the back of our cars. Bluetooth actually works pretty well in my car, other than having to use the tiny display on the stock head unit, which is pretty useless for scrolling through a phone book. But for incoming calls, it works well. Can't say the same for my Z4MC, it's almost useless.

Hieu & Kevin, the 4-digit PIN number is on the unit in the trunk, but I don't want to take off the headliner and unscrew stuff. Too lazy hehe
ELCID it's neither, all ZHPs that do have Bluetooth enabled have unique PINs. Or else people would be (able to) connect left and right whenever you put it to "search."
I miss the Bluetooth function....for an '05 car, it was pretty damn useful and futuristic. I remember saying "dial" out loud, and the car would ask for the number. Or "phonebook," then "call ___" and my phone would be dialing that person.

i don't use bt at all. my phone just uses the aux input like it's a headset. so to me it's the same thing. except if i want to talk to it, i have to press on the phone first

In a textbook example it would be easy, the owners manual lists:
Weight: 3285lbs
distribution front / rear: 50.1% / 49.9%
At the recommended inflation of 35psi front, 42psi rear you get:
FRONT: 3285 * .501 / 2 = 822.89 lbs per wheel
822.89lbs divided by 35lbs per square inch == 23.51 in^2 contact patch
REAR: 3285 * .499 / 2 = 819.61 lbs per wheel
819.61lbs divided by 42lbs per square inch == 19.51 in^2 contact patch
If car tires were made like inner tubes it really would be that easy to calculate. We want our car tires to be flat on the bottom though so they have steel or Kevlar belts in them to help hold that shape and you end up with a significant amount of weight being physically supported by the sidewalls. If you really wanted to know the contact size and shape you'd have to lift the car by the wheels, paint the bottom of the tires, lower it onto cardboard, raise the car back up and then analyze the patch.

Not all E46s came with Bluetooth - what I've heard is that the coupes all have the buttons on the steering wheel for it but that doesn't mean it was ever enabled or functioning. My 2005 325Ci had the buttons but no Bluetooth.
With that being said, the easiest way to find out is to press the R/T button on top of the one with an icon of a head that's speaking. If you are Bluetooth-enabled, the radio should read "searching." That's when you would use your phone to search for the connection, enter the PIN, and you will be linked from then on whenever the car is on.

From what I've heard/read, most if not all E46 coupes have the R/T and Bluetooth button on the left side of the steering wheel.
Whether or not it's enabled/functioning though, depends on if the original owner purchased that option.
My 2005 325Ci did not respond when I pressed those buttons. But for the 330Ci, pressing the R/T prompted the radio display to read "SEARCHING" and that's when I was able to connect to it using my phone.
You can check by pressing the R/T button, or the Bluetooth button (a face talking, it's right next to R/T).

Assuming you're looking at the 8 inch wheel, they have an offset of +13. Comparing to 8 inch 135s, those have an offset of +47. I'm guessing you would have to cut/roll your fenders to make them work.

I took them off on my 325 permanently and there's one missing on my zhp. The cover stays put. I'd only replace them if you're fanatical about keeping everything perfect.

Actually you should ask Stathi, he did it with his wheels.
Center bore is the same, but offset is something like ET23
I know there is 1 Dakar Yellow ZHP produced.
I'm not sure about other E46s though because Dakar was mainly an E36 M3 color.

Well mine are now different because of my recent accident the passenger headlight needed replacing and an AL unit is what was sourced.
So possibly one had to be replaced at some point?

I switched out the stock suspension on my former E30 and ran Koni yellows with H&R Sport springs. I didn't want to make the ride too harsh even though the car was supposed to me more track-biased. Drop was acceptable over stock, yet still allowed me to clear most speed bumps without issue. FWIW, I do not yet have Koni's on my ZHP, but I will certainly add them in the future. Good luck hunting down the ideal suspension setup.

Generally I think the colors with numbers are reformulations of the paint, not necessarily a real color change. A slight change may occur in shade but its not the point of why they change the name

I generally take all of my BMW wheel spec questions to this wonderfully complete database, the BMW Treff Felgenkatalog (http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/). It’s in German, but generally understandable.

Alrighty I plan on doing my INSPECTION II service in the next few months and want to know the best fluids for the job,specifically diff and tranny wise. I have been looking at these two options and they look to be as close to OE as you can get. Any thoughts

Have a ball.
Terra ran the Pentosin in his, and had positive things to say. His experience was good enough for me, and I'm glad I went that way.

I'm running pentosin in my trans and redline in my diff. BMW told me to use pentosin in my trans based off the sticker on the side of it.
I highly recommend you do not use royal purple. If I remember correctly, Keith put it in his trans for a little while and sent it to Blackstone for analysis. Blackstone grilled it suggesting to immediately take it out because it was causing damage.

Lurking around, I believe it's time to change the trans/diff fluid.
Just a few things though....
1) I asked my guy about Pentosin and Redline. He asked what specs for Pentosin (guess I'll have to do some more digging) and said Redline for the diff is a waste unless you are tracking the car. I have no idea what this means but he did say it's like getting R comp. tires and only commuting with them. Looking back I guess this means it's not cheap....? And there's other alternatives?
2) Same fluids for manuals work with autos?
3) What's the general consensus on when to change the fluid? Based on miles or time? I know most of us change our engine oil anywhere from 3,000 miles to 7,000 miles with 3k being the more conservative (PREservative) end but what about the trans/diff?
4) Flush or just change?
Well there are lots of options for the diff and redline is a popular one. If go with Mobil or redline just because availability and quality. For the ATF I strongly urge OEM, but that is expensive and hard to find. The new fluid BMW is selling is remarked dex6. There are many auto guys here that have used redline atf d4 and been fine. My tranny didn't like it so much. Not sure how many miles you have, but I'd change before 60k if possible. If you wait not a big deal because Gary and others have higher mileage autos and have done the fluid change late in the game. As for flush or change on the ATF do the change. You will be dropping the tranny pan and putting a new filter in so about 7-9qts...I think.
I think atf every 30k after your first one and the diff every 50kish? Dane has a pretty good log or maybe it was the Mike Miller sheet.

My indy just changed the trans & diff fluids in my Z4MC, and used Redline in both. The differential lube was kinda stupid-expensive, but hey, in that exotic locking diff, I figure I should use the good stuff.. even if I mostly drive it like an old lady (well ok not MOSTLY, but...).

Was looking at the zip-tie method but saw a thread on here from awhile ago where someone (dane?) basically said to just go ahead and replace the whole thing since you will have already taken apart the door at that point anyway.

What is this connector? Right side of trunk, is bundled to the smaller positive battery cable. Two of three pins populated in the connector. I found something similar by one of the seat belts when I had the interior out.

Yes, I usually have leftover. You will need to go to the dealer to have them cycle your ABS to get the last of the possible air out of the system since you're replacing lines

Yup. Used INPA and followed the ISTA procedure for bleeding lines after I went to braided.
