Apart from belts, can’t really think of anything. Also good time to check the alternator make, if you don’t know already in case you need to order pulleys for it later.

Ever had a door rattle that improves by rolling down the window a smidge? I checked the seal along the roof sill, but nothing seems to be in there, and the window glass is fine, but damn me if it doesn't rattle like crazy and I can't identify the source.

Have you done your window regulators? That’s what I would suspect, especially if it goes away with the window down.

Interesting...what part fails that starts to rattle, especially with the window up? My windows do "click" from time to time when actuating, but move at roughly the same speed up and down.

No experience with FEQ, but I tend to avoid it if it's made in China.

There is a thread on nam3forum about driveshafts, but the thread sidetracked to half-shafts and a member reported disappointing results with FEQ (and another Chiense brand, if I recall correctly).

Maybe not worth the hassle of doing the job twice.

Hmmm yeah when the time comes I'll spring for an FAG hub/bearing assembly. On first impressions it seems like a quality part, but who knows, the bearing could blow after 10 or 20,000 kms

That FEQ looks decent to me. If I see a stamped ABS ring on the wheel bearing, I consider it cheap, but if it is cast, I would run it. I'd buy it off you if shipping from Canada wasn't so expensive.

If you're interested I can get a quote, just pay price of shipping and it's yours. It'll likely be around $20-25 to ship, I sold a set of camber plates on here and that was about how much it was to California.

Won't be able to get around to it until early next month though - I ship it through a cross-border company who forwards it to UPS. They are located in Toronto and I won't be back in town until then

Can’t figure out my alarm situation for the life of me. The lock/unlock/alarm chimes are all low volume. I’ve changed the hood sensor, and it’s still low. It makes a sound audibly but it’s so quiet you have to literally put your ear on the driver’s side of the front hood.

Any searches I’ve done come up with some weird ambiguous results. When I engage the alarm by holding the trunk button you can definitely hear it but it’s not blaring loud like I’ve heard before. It sounds pretty quiet for a car alarm.

It's damaged or defective. I had a similar issue with a used one and the replacement worked perfect. I read somewhere that they can be damaged being dropped or banged around.

Yeah ordering from Europe is the best for these kinds of things... when I got my Sparco bucket seat I got it for ~$500 CAD or so out of a store in Italy. To my door including shippings + taxes it ended up being right around $700 CAD. And I could easily sell it on kijiji or fb marketplace for $850 or $900.

Still doing more research and found a couple more places, one of which is LLL Parts out of the UK (https://www.lllparts.co.uk/product/51117893057-bmw-mini-warehouse-3/mpn/51117893057). 400 Euros is a pretty good price, especially if shipping isn't too much!

Decided not to go with an euro bumper, actually decided not to get my front bumper repaired at all. I threw some touch-up paint over the scrape a few days ago and from 10 ft away it really isn't bad. Of course when you get up close you see the scrape along with all the peeling clear and rock chips on the whole thing, but given how much I track/autox I really don't want to have to "care" for new front bumper paint. I also might be having another cross-country road trip towards the fall, and again it's just so nice to be worry-free with the front bumper.

I did spend a decent amount of time researching where to get a good deal on the euro bumper though. I've found that OEMVWShop (https://www.oemvwshop.com/51117893057-panel-bumper-primed-front-p3029620/) has the best price with shipping. LLL Parts was even better at just over 400 Euros but they won't ship to Canada. E-Acca wanted 200 Euros to ship.

Going to get the rear bumper fixed for sure though, that one really bugs me

Is that the battery tray? There's a big thread on nam3f on that if soNo, one of the spots under the rear footwell where the drain plugs go. I did see that thread (and will be looking into it as well) but the sheet surrounding the plug has fully rusted through.

I have an appointment with the body shop on the 28th for my rear bumper. I may just leave the interior stripped and patch the hole with a few layer of duct tape in the meantime if he can weld it shut.

I'm taking the easy way out, but for good reason. Slept on it and decided to just fibreglass it - the hole is twice the size of what is was originally, but in the grand scheme of things still relatively small so it's not that structural. And having prior composites experience definitely helps, a good repair will be sufficiently strong.

Grinded back the top and bottom of the panel big enough for a good amount of healthy metal exposed, for the fibreglass and resin to latch onto. Before doing so, going to treat the metal to POR15 metal ready to prevent cancer spread. Then apply multiple layers of plain or twill weave fabric (not chopped-strand mat that comes with the 3M kit) with differing fibre orientations on the top and bottom. Then POR15 paint and top coat with stone chip guard.

Thanks guys. Upon closer inspection the stud appears to be sheared off, and both terminals tightened up. I believe it's probably an old one that was broken and got dropped into the battery tray

No, there's only one pair of cats (one for each bank). As far as I know, this is the case for all E46's in the US.
You may be thinking of resonators.

Yes. The regular E46 330's have a flap in the exhaust valve that opened up on higher demand to produce more noise. The ZHP mufflers don't have the flap so it's always "open" per se.

It's very rare that I buy used parts for my car but maybe you could buy a used OE coil as well if you can find a guy selling them cheap enough. Mine were only $10 CAD a pop, can't really go wrong for that price even if it happens to conk out a couple years down the line

Might be the best bet, gotta verify first though if that's the problem. Luckily there's a ZHP owner nearby who said I could borrow his coil to test if that is actually the problem. I might still go with new Delphi ones and just invoke that FCP warranty whenever necessary.

Sounds like my voltage regulator - my alternator has the oval connector so I had to order the one for the Z4.

Bookmarking this for future reference. Had no idea Eldor was the top brand for coils

Hmm...that explains why when I replaced JRs coils awhile back, it didn't snap. I was like that's weird, how do I know it's in? Just pushed it all the way down as much as I could and that was it. Hopefully, it doesn't misfire down the road. It's working fine now and cured his misfires.

I don't have a third option, but I have the Pedalhaus in my E30 and I love them (in black). My E30 is a weekend/summer warrior so not a ton of miles since install (been about 8-9 years though) and with a quick wipe they look like new. I highly recommend.

I prefer the Rennline pedal set. They are excellent quality but you will pay for them. I have this set for my Porsche and Audi and plan to retrofit them into my M3 and ZHP...

I've thought about 10mm too, but it's really hard to decide whether to go with hubcentric 10mm or 10mm + hub extender. Especially because I've read that 10mm hubcentric spacers don't fit in the front because the hub is wider in the front than the back. I'd still prefer something in the region of 7mm.

I guess I could try going ultra conservative with 3mm to 5mm, but I'm not sure if that's worth it or if 5mm rear even works. I guess 5mm front and 3mm rear might be an option.

That's what I'm doing. I put on 3mm spacers up front since adding my Wilwood BBKs there... no issues as far as I know... I have sourced 3mm hub centric spacers for my rear wheels.

Lemförder would be the go to. I currently have Meyle HD and they have lasted me longer than Lemförder, but I don't think that's going to be a concern if you are running stock sway bars.

I'd say you're on borrowed time with the coolant lines. I haven't had failure, but replaced them "while in there" at 125k.
Control arm bushings can be shot at 60k. Ball joint life span can depend on how it's driven.

Since/if the intake manifold is coming off, the sky's the limit! Much of the stuff on my car was original/16 years old, so I started at the radiator & worked back to the firewall to include all heater hoses - water pump, tensioners, belts, fan blade, expansion tank, coolant hoses, intake gaskets, valve cover gasket, sparkplugs, oil filter housing gasket, power steering reservoir & hoses, CCV parts. Probably forgot something!

I replaced it at 80k. There were some broken plastic bits on the inside. I only did it cause SC will be a bitch to take off later.


I did the dip stick o-rings (got viton for the bottom one)
since you're taking off the manifold, you'll need the intake gaskets.
The starter. People say it's easier with the transmission out, but I think it's easier with the intake manifold out.
I also replaced the lower hose that connects to one of the coolant hard lines
That stupid fuel vent hose that connects to the side of the intake manifold, I replaced that with a way longer one lol
Since you're taking off like all the intake stuff, clean TB, TB gasket, clean/replace ICV, ICV gasket, DISA/gold DISA, new intake hoses/air filter
CCV and all the hoses connected to it
clean the fuel injectors (didn't do this cause my injectors will be replaced)


while you're in there is dangerous lol I replaced some other things along the way. But it wasn't related to being under the manifold. But it was just easier since it wasn't in the way.

I personally swapped my dash and carpets from grey to black. There is nothing back there that uses that. It probably got stuck to your shoe and you pulled it into the car

Thanks for the recommendations. I just realized yesterday I never put LEDs in my reverse lights when I went to try and figure out why my passenger side LED tail light doesn’t light up when the HL switch is turned. Lights up when I hit the brakes but doesn’t stay lit with the switch turned

This will be my first Winter in Utah with my 05 coupe. Originally my plan was to park the ZHP during Winter months (driveway, uncovered unfortunately) and drive my older Tundra until the state stops salting the roads in early Spring. However, as I consider the impact to the ZHP in being parked for several months (need for fluid refresh come Spring, flat spots on tires, mice?? etc etc), does it make more sense to simply drive the ZHP occasionally and just make a point of washing regularly to reduce wear and tear from salt exposure? Curious on everyone's opinion one way or the other.

I would just drive it on dry days when the salt will have the least impact and wash the undercarriage regularly like you said.
We never had a problem with mice because we have a cat and litter box in the garage, but there are ways around things like flat spots. There’s a whole thread on long term storage on the forum somewhere

Ridex, Stark, Hella, Era, Hitachi, Meat & Doria, Magneti Marelli, Beru, Bremi, Janmor, Bougicord, Abakus, Topran, Champion, Esen SKV, JP Group, Vemo, Facet, Mapco, Swag, NGK, Tesla, Triscan, EPS, Lizarte, Denckermann, Sidat, AIC, FAE, Profit, Metzger and of course Eldor.

I dare say any of these will be better than the Bosch crap.

Somehow I can't see the video. But FWIW I have developed a high-frequency vibration from near the SAP. Turns out my manifold heat shields are super loose, you can wobble them easily by hand

Has anyone ever heard of oil leak but only on an incline? I left my car with my dad in San Diego, and he says he left it in the inclined driveway (front facing up) for a couple days, and when he moved it, he found 2 soccer ball-sized round oil spots underneath.
I came back to SD today to find that the spots are still there, so it’s not water. Definitely greasy to the touch. Checked oil level and it’s still normal, and I could not find an obvious leak from looking in the engine bay or peering under the car (not able to get underneath it however).

Any thoughts? Should I be worried?

In Europe, E46's didn't have the turn signals lit when the parking lights were on, so instead city lights were used. My speculative guess is that they were a way to light the front of the car without having potentially blinding headlights on in city settings, making it easy to be seen while still allowing pedestrians and other drivers to not be blinded, same as our parking lights here.

For both coupes and sedans, there is a hole in the inner reflective bowl that serves as a cutout for the bulb. It isn't the high beam bulb, but instead a small 5W bulb that fits into that cutout through the back of the housing and twists in. It has its own bulb holder and wiring that goes to the LCM, and would be activated by turning the light switch to the parking light or headlight position.

I can't speak for coupes, but for sedans with Xenons here in the U.S., only the ZKW headlight housings have the cutouts in the housing itself. AL Xenon housings have to be drilled out on the housing side of things. I'm not sure what holes the halogen housings have.

I did the retrofit on my ZHP and love it as an alternative to the angel eyes that everyone else runs.
Here's an example pic of how the European setup is - turn signal lights are completely off while the headlights are on and city lights illuminated. Note, my inner bowls are yellow, making the city light presence more pronounced.

I definitely have seen that hole. I used it to wire up power and ground to my bi-xenon projector right into the pins of the high beam, heh.

Thankfully I discovered the Porsche projectors are smaller and do low and high beam from a single element. They're also cheaper! I didn't like having money anyway. :)

I spent hours looking at that plug style and can’t find the female. These plugs are 4-pin. I can only find stuff 6-pin and greater or a 4-pin all in a line

Has anyone with an Xtrons unit (preferably model PB7646BAP) have trouble getting their Bluetooth to work? Mine suddenly stopped connecting. On my iPhone it says connected, but it doesn't show it is connected on the headunit, and when I go into the Bluetooth settings, it doesn't say it is connected nor does it even see my iPhone when I forget the Xtrons unit as a device and is searching for devices.

I have no shadow or permanent codes. When I had the auto, the idle would sometimes stutter and you cud feel it as if it misfired. It happens less often with a manual but I sat at a light when the idle started going weird. I don’t know if this knocking came after the weird idle or during, but it did. Any idea where I should look? No other driving issues period.

Can't remember if you've replaced the coils, but that thumping noise (if I heard correctly) kind of sounded like a coil going out.

Beisan VANOS and rattle kit are good preventative services regardless of the problem, but this doesn't seem like VANOS or VANOS-rattle problem.

I have a bunch of spare coils you can have. Come by my house and grab them. Feel free to use my vice for the vanos job. I have done it 4 times and can do it in my sleep.

Wow, you're like my E46 god. I didn't even know you hang out here. Happy holidays Matt! I finally got rid of the old car btw, reinforced and manual swapped the new one. You haven't seen it yet! I'll have to put my new seats in before I reveal it to you, I'll fast track that project. I'll stop by some time in the new year. I need to do a rack swap and oil change ASAP. Diff bushings, DISA and VANOS are all in the mail on the way.

Wagon is running great. Got the mtech front bumper on and the engine in, then got a bad head injury and have been in pretty serious pain for a few weeks. It’s getting better tho. Should have the new tune on the wagon and the rest of the mtech on soon.

I recommend Stabilus, too. I once tried Uro for trunk strut and thought it was going to rip my trunk off the hinges. The opening force was too violent. After 2 openings I removed them and chucked them into the trash, went strut less until the Stabilus arrived.

The diff used to get the 75W-90 before I changed to an LSD.

I'm doing the differential and transmission fluids today - is there a crush washer for the differential? On realoem.com it shows it as a drain plug (#5, 33117525064) with a crush washer (#6), but no part is given for #6. On ECS it lists the washer as 07119963355.

Can’t help you with part numbers but I do remember not replacing the plugs or the o rings when I replaced the diff and tranny fluid. I don’t think it’s necessary but I can see why you want to replace them.

Yeah, you'd most likely be safe reusing it, just check if there's compression set or not.

Haha I bought a couple new plugs the first time I did this from FCP. So when I send back fluid, I send back the plugs as well

Will, that was my situation with both plugs for diff and transmission. I bought them 1 month ago, but didn't have a chance to install them. I bought them from ECS. Hopefully they are correct. I am sure mine will be very rusty on the touring.

I got the differential plugs out, they had crush washers on from my last time doing this, so I just put the plugs straight back on without new crush washers. I might replace the plugs next time. Replacement goes for the transmissions one as well because they seem to be stripping somehow...

I used their fuel treatment & engine flush products with no issues on a BMW E46 that had no prior owner records. I think the product names have changed. Never used their oil.

I've used both. I'd like to say they helped, but I can't say one way or the other.

When Costco used to sell Techron I'd add a bottle every oil change. I can't say it did anything either.

With quick stops I put them in their case & in the door panel; at the end of the drive in their case & in the glove box. If you don't let them out of the car you can't lose them!

Hey guys, need some help.

Fuel pump gave out tonight. No biggie. Pop the new one in.

Except this is what I found. Two pin instead of OEM 4 pin and the fuel line has a locking clamp on it instead of a normal clamp. Looks nothing like OEM harness.

At a total loss on this and now waiting for a tow. Maybe I'm a dolt and ordered the wrong pump?

Best part? I've replaced both of these parts in E46s before. I knew this....

Don't attempt roadside repairs on no sleep and over stressed. It makes you forget basic things and post silly questions.

I know this quite well. As I said in another thread, I ended up getting a failed alternator, clutch starting my car 6 times, getting one jump, "sleeping" and sourced/replaced an alternator all in under 10 hours all while 400 miles from home. I had trouble putting the cooling fan in, but figured it was because I was tired and stressed. So I'm beating the hell out of my car, as I do, to make sure the alternator works.

Then I head head back. While sitting at the light talking about BMW's with a friend, I glance down and see my car is overheating. I immediately turn off the car and inconvenience everyone in this busy LA intersection because I sure as sh*t am not warping my engine this far from home. A few guys from the local gas station helped me push it off this busy street. We get into a less busy street with two turning left turning lanes. Traffic doesn't seem saturated and I tell them f*ck it, leave it here. I pop the hood flabbergasted that my car is overheating after replacing something so trivial, and my 3 hours of sleep is not letting me grasp the idea that my car holds temp fine when driving, but only overheated at a long red light with the AC on. I spent about 10 minutes looking for leaks and answering bypasser questions about why a BMW has broken down, when I finally see that my fan is not plugged in. The reason the fan was difficult to put in was because the plugs are between the fan and the radiator.

I tried to pull the shroud enough to get the plug out, but I couldn't. Thankfully, the pains of working on my car on vacation made my fear of another breakdown so strong, that I still had all the tools in my backseat. Of course, it took me another 20 minutes to realize this thanks to the sleep. I loosened the T20, plugged in the fan (which immediately went to work), and saw my coolant gauge right where I love her when I sat back down.

Moral of the story? Yes, dear god. do not attempt roadside repairs with no sleep and while stressed :) Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I installed SLR adjustable front control arm bushings installed about a month ago, with new control arms. I noticed the alignment was awful and there seemed to be two, randomly dictated straight aways.

Edit: same day I also installed monoball trailing arm bushings

I got an alignment which improved it, but didn’t change it. I asked them to double check it with no success.

Then I changed the wheels and tires. No change.

Then I changed the steering rack and tie rods, and steering guibo/coupler, followed by another alignment.

Now I notice the wheel is straight on decel and cruising, but give it gas and it slowly pulls right. Let off the gas, straight away returns to center.

To me it really seems like the FCAB’s, but I’ve never heard anything like this. Any ideas or does it really seem like the FCAB’s? Just thought I’d like ideas before I make an angry phone call

I did them at the same time at his recommendation, and it was due to a no-crank condition whenever temperatures were in the single digits. I have a feeling it was one of the relays, not sure which one though.

So I found a pretty significant oil leak coming from my automatic transmission. I think it’s the oil pan gasket. I did a drain and fill with gasket and filter replacement maybe 3-4 years ago.

Do I need to replace the gasket now that oil is going past it pretty easily?
Or could it maybe be a torque spec issue? I torqued the bolts properly, but wondering if I should have gone tighter. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem?

Trans pan gasket is replaced with every filter replacement and drain/fill of fluid.

You can tighten the bolts on the pan and see if it stops the leak.

Thanks, I decided I’m just gonna replace the gasket and filter again. I have them on warranty from FCP euro so might as well. Only thing that sucks is being out of commission for a little while.
I had initially bought a CRP gasket and filter kit in 2017 for like $22. The same kit is over $55 at FCP euro now, so I went with the Meyle kit which is $34
