I would look into the bi-xenon option because the light output is tremendous compared to Halogens. However if they are ZKWs you will need to repair them. Honestly, the best option comes from q fellow on here by the name Clemsone46. He repairs the bowls for the projectors. It's a great service.

Halogen uses reflectors not projectors. You can't install HID into reflectors unless you retrofit projectors.

Yea you can. I looked into it on my zhp. You can get a decent pair as low as $150.

My previous e46 had xenon. Difference is fairly significant, but since I do so little night driving it doesn't bother me.

I'll be doing a headlight refresh soon, staying with halogens. New bulbs, lenses, and clear corners. All in it's about $150-200 I think. The lenses are the most expensive part.

I think all you need is lenses and ballasts for a nice setup that will probably beat the stock bi-xenons.

I recommend Redline MTL. 2 quarts should suffice. Fill the gearbox and once it spills out wait until the excess starts dripping rather than acting as a stream. That way it isn't over full ;)

Tranny capacity is ~2qts i believe. I run 1qt ATF 1qt MTL and it's a great compromise for the climate up here. No issues with synchros.

Depends on the tranny. I don't remember exactly but I think if you have a green sticker it's straight MTL and if it's yellow it's 75-90 gear oil (for redline fluids at least)

I have 75W-80. I have had it since March and it got down to the lower thirties and I didn't have any problems. :) it's good stuff

To get the same appearance from the 18.5 rims as the 18x9.0's would that be the equivalent of running a 50mm spacer with my 18.5 rim?

Offset is off by 8mm, but I run 255/35/18 18x9s with ET 42 and I have absolutely no rubbing. That 8mm means you are a bit more sunken in (I think) so you should be fine. Might have to space a few mm if you rub inner.

Turnermotorsport had a buy 3 get 1 free APEX sale last black friday. Shipping was $100 if I recall but there was no tax since its out of state.. Course you can get it sooner by picking it up from APEX. I believe you save $30-50 for picking up.

I'm going to test drive a 2004 330i (non-ZHP) and worry if the dealer has reset the SES or other warning lights. In some place I read the SES comes back after 50 miles of driving. Is that correct ? Also, I wonder if asking Auto Zone to check for stored codes could be useful.

Any thoughts ?

Checking for stored codes is a great idea; not sure if the scanner includes when those codes were thrown, but having an idea of what has popped up before is helpful. As for an SES coming back, I don’t think that there is a set mileage, the light should just reappear if/when the same error condition reoccurs.

I don't know if it's a hard coded number, but there is a decent amount of miles for the computer to reset or something like that. I've heard anything between 50-100 miles.

If you have access a BMW DX computer can view old codes. Indy or dealer can do that.

Usually if the codes are reset, the OBDII readiness codes are no longer ready. That's also a good way to tell.

You will need to drive cycle the car to get the readiness monitors ready.

Actually no. This only will re engage the OBDII readiness codes for smog inspections. Has nothing to do with the lost codes.

The simple code readers usually will only show up codes that are currently present. Stored codes will need a more advanced code reader like BMW DIS/ISTA or like an autologic etc.

Generally, everything flat. The previous owner upgraded the audio with BSW and Polk. The factory HK speakers will respond differently.

I've found my tranny can be a bit uncooperative at times (i.e. not wanting to go into gear), most notably in the winter (nowhere near as cold here as Montreal, but it can get down to -10c overnight at its worst). Can it really be as simple as what tranny fluid is being used? The previous owner says he put "Pentsoin MTF" in it. I've been thinking about rebuilding the shift linkage to see if that resolves the problem. Failing that I was going to investigate rebuild options.

I can't seem to be angry at her no matter what she does. She left me stranded at a CVS parking lot in Colorado for a bad fuel pump and I still made sure she was OK until fixed. She on occasion, shuts off the AC in 96 degree Florida heat and I still love her.

I enjoy gourmet sodas a lot, and I need it to hold the drink vertically. If the drink has a cap, I just leave in the leg extension opening on the passenger seat.

Have you inspected the brake shoe? Remove the rotor and check the brake shoe. It might be glazed over or out of material.

Not sure on the part number, but that's a coolant return hose. Check the O-ring before replacing the hose. I had a bad o-ring cause a leak in the same place.

Not sure on the part number, but that's a coolant return hose. Check the O-ring before replacing the hose. I had a bad o-ring cause a leak in the same place.

Only 1 of the two stock attachment holes lines up. The AFE housing can't move any further forward as its already touching the frame rail (top right of pic).

Yes there is supposed to be a gap and these are common fitment problems with the aFe intake. You can flex the metal a bit to make it fit. Same issues are seen with the cover. The stock elbows will be slightly scrunched so it's good if they are newerish, but not terrible if they aren't. Sucks this is how fitment is on an aftermarket part, but most deal with it because of the performance/noise gain.

Lower intake boot was replaced last year so no problem there. Having fitment issues on a $400 air intake is a bit disapointing but not a big deal.

the normal 2 man method. but the pedal doesn't come back up on it's own, you have to pull it back up. then when all the bubbles are out, pump the pedal until it goes up on it's own and you should be good.

other than that, iono of a way you can do it by yourself without a power bleeder

Lower intake boot was replaced last year so no problem there. Having fitment issues on a $400 air intake is a bit disapointing but not a big deal.

100'c? Mine gets up to 98-99 ish in traffic sometimes. It doesn't go above that. Turn your ac on to activate the secondary fan and increase engine rpms

The entire system was replaced in December, and included a Stewart pump upgrade.

I only got 100+ when sitting in the exhaust of the car in front of me. We have a better grid set up in the afternoon and it's idling around 98.


I also go it to hit 101 at the very end of my lap. As soon as I backed off heading back to grid it normal out.

Yeah they've been using the same design for the clown nose forever. Just search for "BMW mirror" on ebay and find one older than 2006.

I'm going to be ordering a rebuilt vanos from Dr. Vanos shortly and will be doing the VCG while I'm in there. Dr. Vanos comes with the Vanos gasket and the oil line crush washers. I think that's everything needed for that part of the job.

For the valve cover gasket, I'll order this kit (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-valve-cover-gasket-kit-11120030496kit) from FCP Euro. The steel washers are probably unnecessary, but everything else in the kit looks good.

Beisan's DIY also mentions some easily breakable or loseable parts that you may want to have on hand just in case, the engine cover nut cap (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-valve-cover-bolt-cover-11121726089), the fan shroud clip (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-fan-shroud-clip-17111712963), the vanos piston bolt (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-vanos-unit-fit-bolt-genuine-bmw-11361748745), and the engine cover pads (Part #11-12-1-730-352 - FCP Euro doesn't have them).

Apart from some RTV sealant (high temperature I presume), is there anything else I need or may want for the job?

If you've been seeing camshaft sensor codes, now is the time to replace the sensors... Spark plugs would be easy to throw in as well. Otherwise you look all set.

Nah, it should be fine. You might leak a little mayo if you have some built up. But you can probably catch it with a rag. What you miss will just get on the plastic skid cover thing. Good luck! Just did it a week or two ago - not as bad as people make it out to be, as long as you don't have large hands...

I would think that this should be fine, though it may have marginally higher moisture content then if you were to open a brand new container. That said, I cannot imagine that it would cause you any trouble, unless you are driving 10/10ths at the track. (Sometimes I do this myself - use an already open container to top off, etc. and have not had an issue.)

Mine isn't deep enough and I often slosh oil out of the spout. I saw one at Advance the other day that looked deeper and like it had a cap that screwed onto the end of the spout (to prevent sloshing).

Reminder from Bruce on Colin's project thread: "note to self, don't wear a long sleeve shirt when you do the CDV removal. It's going to run on your hand and down your arm, I had 2 layers of long sleeve on today and could feel the wetness until I finished my other job. You only need 2-17mm open ended wrenches and 1-11mm open ended wrench. If you're quick in doing this, you lose a little bit of fluid but no pressure bleeding required. A 2nd set of hands is very helpful to be quick.

Nah, if it was speed sensitive you wouldn't need the sensor. I don't mind it. I've only found it intrusive once or twice.

I posted on my autoX club's forum looking for somebody with a suitable charger for the flash, and somebody suggested this. Personally, I'm not convinced that its a good idea, but I thought I would run it by the Mafia guru's. My suspicion is that the donor vehicle/battery would not provide a stable enough power supply.

My car is coded for daytime running lights, so Conforti says to use a continuous 20 amp charge. Somebody suggested pulling the DRL fuse so I would only need a 10 amp charger. Looking at a fuse panel chart (http://www.impee.co.uk/bmw_fuse_box/BMW%20e46%20Fuse%20Box%20diagram.png), I don't see a fuse specifically for the DRL's, just a reference to a "light module". Again, what do the Mafia guru's think of this idea?

I asked a local indy shop for a quote on having them do it. They wanted ~ $175 + tax to do it. For that money I could by a 20amp charger and do it myself. :)

I think battery charges come in handy and a replacing / reprogramming a DME is probably going to be in the $600 range. Plus the whole issue that you don't just run down to the local auto parts store to get one.

That being said, I'm an impatient guy and running jumper cables to a running car is the type of thing I'd be tempted to do. The potential problem is that it's not that uncommon for idling cars to kick their fans and momentarily dip the rpm's. When this happens the drop in voltage may cause problems with the programming. Other than that, you're typical alternators can kick out at least 60 amps even at idle so in theory would provide more than adequate current / voltage to keep the Shark happy.

I keep searching the countless threads out there and there's some videos of the rewards being adjusted but I guess I need something that explains it in layman's terms.

My mechanic who installed them chose the settings for me and they seem slightly softer than the stock shocks 7,000 miles ago. I have the two little plastic cap things and want to experiment but don't know where to start or what to expect.

well if you make it stiffer, then your car is going to feel stiffer. when going over bumps you will feel them more. if you're pushing the car around, then you will understeer since the rear might be too soft. i'd play around with it until you find some settings that you like.

Rebound is how hard it pulls down after a bump. What you are describing is compression, which you can't adjust.

Honestly lip spoilers, lowered suspension, and SoCal roads don't work too well together and that is why I don't run that combo. Just plan on buying a new one when yours gets chewed up. Your only other option is returning to stock springs

yeah that's why when you see one of those things you let off the gas for a second then as you're going down it, hit the throttle again. weight will shift to the back just enough to clear it.

but yeah rebound isn't going to help you with that.

Yes - twice. Had Homelink added to my M3-style oval mirror in my Z4MC. Super-clean job, if not cheap. After I bought my ZHP I found a Homelink mirror on Ebay (convertibles had Homelink on the mirror, coupes/sedans had the kit for putting it in the overhead console). It had a bubble (and was priced appropriately) so I sent it to Scott @ radar-mirror for his $99 repair. 1-day turnaround, perfect results. The guy does great work and is FAST.

Yeah MY2005 was a little weird. The 8/04 builds were titled 2005s, but the model year changes themselves didn't occur until 09/2004 (so the 08/04 builds didn't get the MP3 radio or bluetooth assist modules for example).

That is the spring seat and bottom bushing. On the other side is where the strut bearing is located. The spring seat itself shouldn't clunk unless the spring was not seated properly, more commonly its a strut bushing that clunks (did you replace the bearings?). A visual inspection should determine if the spring was installed properly.

Probably the usual: harder/slower starts. That's about it.

Nope the tilt sensor plug is bundled up if not actually connected to the sensor. The plug shown is for pre-delivery, as stated earlier.

Mine did the normal slow starts, longer cranking, then- no start.

Honestly, with the temps that NOVA sees in the summer (heat kills a battery too), anything over 5 years old. I'd replace for piece of mind. It is only $150 or so.

I went with an H8 Duralast battery from Autozone. Was about $185+core+tax (core was refunded when I brought back my OEM battery that had 100k miles on it).

Fits like a glove. Though, I had to remove a little bracket that was placed in the tray to hold the smaller battery in place. Also a little tough to get the vent hose on. I attached it before the cables, and bolting the battery down. On my 5er, I get my wife to sneak her tiny hand in there and attach the vent hose.

Hmmm, tough one. One one hand, if you're more of a BMW purist it would be viewed as a little tacky. On the other, it's your car, it changes things up, why not have fun with it? Especially with a blue car. You could go for a blue white at 6K (I think) as a middle ground. I think there might be laws about what colors you can put on your lights, but I'm not sure.
