With the battery nearing 10 years old it's time for a new one this spring. Is that something you just call AAA over and get you a new one, or a specific brand is better?I would go on down to an Advance or Auto Zone and pick up an AGM battery. The size required is H7.

With Advance Auto, if you shop online they will often offer a % or money-off code to use with purchase. Buy online & pick up at the nearest store. Not sure if Autozone does the same.

Current offer - TAX REFUND SEASON: SAVE 20% ONLINE. Use code REFUND to save 20% online instantly, good through 3/17/19.

Bring your old one in at the same time to have them recycle it for you. Hate when people don't properly dispose of used car equipment / fluids.

Or keep it as a 12V power supply for trouble shooting.

I still don't have a great place to put my phone either. I usually throw it in the cupholder for easy access as I tend to be pretty textually active at stop lights, but it flops around and annoys the hell out of me.

I stuck these on either side of the center console in my last car and they were perfect for holding phones secure and within reach. I've been meaning to try them on the e46 console for....3 years now?

E9x sport seats. Found some for less than it would cost to refinish mine and fix the heater elements that are not functional. I recognize that the sliders are not the same. But I am unclear if the harnesses match up or if the only way to power the seats is to wire them up separately from the factory harness.

Do our seats move back and forward when you first get in the car, or did mine spazz out moment? Tonight i had to move the car to change parking spots and clicked the unlock button once for the driver's door and when i got in, the seat moved back then forward, first time it had ever happened. In my 2003 pathfinder rust bucket, the seat moves back when i remove key from ignition then forward when key goes in, but this has not happened with the zhp so not aware of it being a feature.

I would look in the manual to see how to program the seats in case it is just that.

It is not supposed to move back and forward, only one direction upon unlocking. It goes straight to the set memory position and is not supposed to move when turning the car off. The only time it's supposed to move on its own is after unlocking the car with a key that has a different memory setting.

The only time I noticed the driver seat moved by itself was when I test drove my first e46, 1999 323i. I unlocked the door with the key itself, not by pressing the fob buttons. I thought that was pretty cool.

Interesting you mention the key. I had been using the spare for the last couple months and right before i went out I decided to switch back to the primary one, so this was my first time using it since i switched to the spare. This morning and afternoon nothing happened so may have been a 1x thing.

OK, so I put in the bavsound speakers and they worked fine. I checked and every speaker was working. Later, I disconnected the battery and replaced the door airbag and spliced in a new connector. Sometime after that, I noticed that the front right door speakers weren't working. All 3 were out. From what I understand, it could be either the amp or the head unit. Any ideas how to test these or anything? If it is the amp, how hard would it be to use an aftermarket amp and do a sub while I'm at it? Also, I have an aftermarket headunit that I put in a year ago - an Avin Avant 3. It's pretty glitchy so I don't want to rule that out, either.

forgot to the add - I replaced the airbag on the driver's side door, and the speakers that don't work are on the passenger side door. So I haven't taken apart the door since I installed the speakers and verified that they were working.

We’ll be taking a 1,800 mile road trip this summer and I’m playing with the idea, of taking the ZHP. The car is nearing 160K and most maintenance is current. Things that I haven’t done are the fuel pump and filer and the PVC system.

The car runs and drives fine and I just replaced the battery and mass air flow meter.

Looking for thoughts, on just driving it or, do some work and spend some money first.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkDefinitely either change or at least put a fresh fuel pump in the trunk if you're ok with a roadside swap. I was lucky enough to show symptoms instead of a sudden failure, but most E46 owners are not. I think that's the only time bomb in these cars though...well...outside of the cooling system...

And the fuel filter would be a good idea for gas mileage alone.

I’ve done quite a few >1000 miles road trips on my zhp. As Nate said, replacing the fuel pump is a good idea. I’d also think about replacing the radiator due to age. I’ve replaced mine at 125k miles (176k now) because it was just before summer and I had a lot of road trips planned and I didn’t want to be stranded. My thinking was, I needed to replace it sooner or later so it wasn’t a question of saving money and since I bought it from fcp, I don’t have to pay for it again...

I am going to replace the fcabs since the current ones have about 70k miles on them but I cant really think of anything else I can replace...

I’m still not sure when/where I’ll replace it yet but I thought I’d order the parts and keep em ready...

Now would also be a good time to install an oil pan baffle if you track or autocross your car, as well as getting that oil pump nut addressed.

Is there a better/different option than the pump nut with the wire through it? I need to start planning my OPG job too.

Well, you could just tack weld the nut itself, or replace the pump with one of the aftermarket solutions. Or, you could be like me and not worry about it, because the vast majority of the cars won't ever have the problem. :)

If I do drop the pan, I will probably do the safety wire option, in case it ever needs to be replaced.

I remember reading somewhere that the real fix is to replace the harmonic balancer with an aftermarket solution. I think it said the harmonics at a certain RPM cause the nut to back out. I also read that the ZHPs have a nut with Loctite on it, but not really sure how true any of this is.

The numerous oil pan gasket jobs I have done for people I ask them to order

Oil pan gasket - Genuine BMW
Oil Pan dipstick o-ring - Genuine BMW
Engine Mounts and trans mounts - upgrade to M3
Steering Coupler
Oil Level Sensor - most people never replace these
Front Sway bar bushings

Not once have I encountered on the zhp cars the oil pump nut being loose or needing to be wired. This was on both low mileage cars and higher mileage examples.

You can do an oil pan baffle but that is more downtime and requires having it welded into the pan.

I think I remember seeing that the zhp's got red loctite on that nut, which means you probably won't be able to get it off with non-flame-shooting tools.

Thanks for list Vas! I replaced the tranny mounts with m3 and have the engine mounts in storage from the past 2 years! Just haven’t had the space (read garage) to get it done but the leaky oil pan gasket is forcing my hand...

What's a good product to remove glue from glass and plastic? i had been using a phone holder on my windshield but when leaving work today i arrived to my car to see it had fallen off and the glue had melted so i have a ring on my windshield (with about an inch of drip) and when it fell, the suction cup part (with the glue on it) landed by the cubby where the cigarette lighter is. I tried wiping it with a wet paper towel but did not do a whole lot.

Use a razor blade on the glass. Goof-off or Goo-gone might work on the plastic, but the soft-touch finish is quite delicate.

I kind of felt that it wouldn't be "right" to put these on the ZHP. They are very open, and without a BBK wouldn't look as good as they could be. The wheels by themselves look great, but I'm a sucker for 5-spokes and the machined look.

Does any have experience with the Ventus S1 Noble2 tires? My PSS are nearing the end of their life and because winter weather is more common in the new city (but not bad enough to justify snows) I’m going with A/S rubber this time.

I know the Pilot A/S3+ is the gold standard, but I really like my Hankook 200TWs so I’m considering giving their A/S tires a shot. The price is very attractive, there’s a rebate, and the warranty is actually better than Michelin or Nate’s beloved Cooper.

Interestingly the Bridgestone warranty doesn’t say anything about staggered fitments.

From what I've seen, tire manufacturers don't really want to warranty staggered fitments because they can't be rotated. I don't blame 'em; you can get a few thousand more out of them if you rotate them.

Michelin I think halves the warranty on staggered tires, and some don't even warranty them. It looks like Bridgestone does the same thing as Michelin. From their warranty guide:

For tires used on staggered fitments (vehicles with differentsize tires between the front and rear); the front tires will havethe full mileage warranty (if available) and the rear tires willhave one-half of the stated mileage warranty (if available)

When I spoke to a Michelin rep at MTrack days in 2017, he mentioned that they will continue to build them for at least 3 more years due to contractual obligations. He also said they will phase them out slowly with OE tires being the last to disappear. Basically Michelin should continue to make the tires available for at least 3 more years after the vehicle production had ended...

The actual seating area of the Alcantara seats is a resilient fabric, so no need to worry about clothing wear during normal driving. What gets rekt on those seats is the bolsters from dragging your booty across them during ingress/egress. I had a 200k mile sedan with Alcantara in great condition because the owners were all careful not to drag on the bolsters.

I’m planning to replace the front brakes on my zhp this weekend and I’m planning to use the 50s kid video as reference. I once helped a friend replace pads on his zhp few years ago but is there anything I should know before I jump in? Appreciate any tips!

I miss the 50skid videos, he just disappeared

When I did rotors and pads on mine, I found them no different than most of the cars on the planet! Hopefully a no surprises job for you

It's pretty straightforward. Might have some trouble pushing the piston back into the bore, but there's some tricks about for that.

I was going to rent the brake caliper tool from auto zone. Anything else I might need?

Thanks!

Yup, his DIY videos are probably the best ones for our cars because he doesn’t have any fancy tools so we can relate to how he goes about doing things...

I would just use a big c-clamp if you have one. That's what I do. In fact, even before pulling off the caliper, a big screwdriver leveraged between the surface of the old pad (on the piston side of the rotor) and the rotor can usually easily push the piston all the way in. Makes the caliper easier to remove afterwards too

So when I've been starting my car recently I've noticed it kinda jumps when starting, as if all the fuel in the engine goes off at once instead of smoothly. No problems running or idling. Only thing is I recently had a system too lean code pop up, but I'm pretty sure thats b/c I didn't tighten the air box properly. Tightened the screw, cleared the code and it hasn't been back since.

TL;DR: is it normal for our cars to have rough starts?

Just use a large c-clamp. I would leave the pad that is attached the to piston on so that you could use it as a contact point for the c-clamp to push the piston back. Other than that, maybe just use some liquid wrench on the hex bolt that holds the rotor. You could buy some extras of that if you end up stripping them somehow.

I know most people take the guide pins off then take the caliper off, then the bracket. But I just take the entire thing with the bracket off in one go. it's a tiny bit more finicky to put the pad back on, but it still saves me a ton of the time not having to deal with aligning the pins back later. Although if you're only doing pads, then don't take the bracket off lol

I ran 245/40-17 fronts and 245/45-17 at the rears for a while.

The rake it creates looked pretty cool to me. It was on stock suspension. All wheels were the same size, though.

Those of you who have replaced/upgraded your sway bars, what did you do with your original ones? I’m not blessed with a ton of garage storage, and I’m kinda sick of them taking up space in the corner. I can’t imagine ever taking the 26/20 combo off this car...

I figure it all have value but we didn't really buy any of it so no real loss

I’ve been reasonably good about getting rid of the stuff I know I’ll never put back on, either by selling or scrapping if it was rusty, but some stuff just slipped through the cracks.

If you know anyone who tracks see if they want them as spares. A lot of guys take old rotors in case one cracks they can still drive home. Or they’ll use them as weights to keep their canopy in the paddock from blowing away lol.

There has to be some kind of secret. Please share your techniquesThe secret is you accept being sprayed by the blinker fluid dispenser.

If you can, drain your washer fluid, then pop off the trim from your headlight washer and catch the spillage that way you can put on the headlight w/o being rushed by the draining fluid. If you have everything off you first put in the headlight, then the trim, then the cap/trim for the washer.

If not, have someone hold the trim and cap together and put in the headlight from above.

Option three if you pull the cap off, let some spill while put in the headlight, trim, then put the cap on. Not the best option I've spilled my whole fluid reservoir trying to do it that way.

Thanks for the advice, I didn’t think to remove the washer nozzle cover piece so I think I’ll try that in the morning because I’m tired of wrestling with the washer arm and trim piece together. Thankfully, my headlight washing apparatus leaks so I corked it off. No wasting of the reservoir for me.

Do you attach the corner light assembly last?

Also any advice on how to position the headlight assembly to allow it to line up properly with the mounting bracket? That’s where I have the most trouble currently

What bracket are you referring to?

You're not detaching the bottom plastic bracket from the headlight, are you? That isn't necessary; just remove the two bolts on top of the headlight and the two on the bottom and the whole thing comes out as one piece with the plastic bracket attached to the bottom of the headlight.

I did have to remove the original bracket because I swapped from ZKW to AL, which had their own bracket. They're not interchangeable.

Thankfully, I got everything taken care of after I gave up and enlisted the help of professionals. Turns out, it was the new mounting bracket that was giving me issues. I should have kept it a little loose to get everything aligned properly before tightening it with an extension underneath the fastened headlight assembly. Also learned to put the lower trim after the headlights are installed.

I'm glad its done and I can't wait to go for a drive tonight and finally see.

For some reason the last few times I've been at the pump the nozzle is clicking prematurely every time. 16.6gal tank and it stops at 13.5, then 14.2(keep in mind I drive until 60 or so miles left in the tank)
Anyone else have a similar issue? It's happened at multiple gas stations so it can't just be the nozzles at one. I'm too afraid to keep clicking it back on to try to get that full tank

Had it happen to me once when I pushed the nozzle too much into the filler...

This was common on the E36 too. Back the nozzle out like an inch and it'll work fine.

Cheers, will definitely try that next fill, it keeps messing up my Gas Tracker numbers lol

I noticed it's pump dependant for my car. I rarely have the issue because I go to the same gas station and pump every time where it always works, but on the odd occasion it'll do the premature click at other stations. There's one in particular that it always does it.

I'm fairly certain this is pump specific. For the places that do it, pulling the nozzle out a tiny bit is enough to let it fill up all the way.

They’re pretty much all the same (I had a vGate something or other, ELM327 sticks out in my mind), but the iOS compatible ones seem to run on WiFi whereas the Android ones are Bluetooth. I think the general consensus is the scan utility apps on Android are better—Torque Pro being highly recommended.

Gotcha, thanks! The OBDII scanner realm seems like a market flush with a zillion products and it's tough to make heads or tails of what is the best. I also saw this BlueDriver Bluetooth OBDII scanner (https://www.amazon.com/BlueDriver-Bluetooth-Professional-iPhone-Android/dp/B00652G4TS) that has thousands of positive reviews on Amazon, but it is $90 vs a lot of others in the <$25 range. Is that basically all software associated with the scanner?

Anyone have any experience with fixing/replacing their volume knob? Mine was starting to stop giving me feedback from twisting it and now I can only turn on the radio by clicking the bottom of the knob 5-6 times. There's just a millimeter or two of space that you can wiggle it back and forth.
Easy fix?

Replaced my expansion tank for the 2nd time due to the drive belt running a hole through. I thought I fixed the radiator mounting the last time this happened but today I got to work and found all my coolant on the ground.

I have no idea why the bottom of my radiator keeps creeping toward the engine. Anyone else have this issue?

Engine/tranny mounts good? It's not the engine moving, it's the radiator.

Our running theory is the top screw thingies weren't holding the rad properly and allowed it to jump up on a bump and allow the bottom to walk out. Bought new ones and remounted everything. Hopefully that fixes it...

Not sure how I missed this. I’m waiting for my smog in the fall to put headers in. I know I’ll get more noise and rasp with headers (or I assume anyway), but right now it’s really bad considering I’m not stock. Volume is barely louder than stock and there’s less rasp than stock. S55 swap + tune

If you’d settle for N55 it’s probably relatively feasible. Integration of the CAS has been proven to integrate with E46 body electronics. The E9x cluster I hear fits in the E46 housing relatively well. If you grab the automatic, the transmission computer for N54 was integrated into the transmission, I’m sure it’s the same for N55.

I love thinking of unique projects like this. My wallet is the limit.

+1. I think for DIY you could probably do an S54 swap pretty cheap if you can buy an entire car from copart. The swap itself for S54 is pretty easy in my opinion.

edit: I think the cars go for under $5k and there's plenty of extra stuff to sell.

The labor to extract, R&R and then make modifications to have the engine work properly including a computer flash are what bring the price up. On top of that you have to do significant reinforcement and upgrades to the subframe, clutch and brakes to handle the additional power.

Also non of this would be CARB legal so that would just be another headache

The hard part about that is literally having it fit in the engine bay and finding a transmission that fits. If V12’s follow the same BMW principle as BMW’s I6’s (that the transmission mating patterns are the same), there is someone who offers an adapter plate for a transaxle for the old 8 series V12. I agree though that would be an insane insane project.

For S55, you may like this (however this is likely standalone): https://www.instagram.com/p/ByQtRmeA0Mv/

There’s a carb legal E46 S65 and a carb legal E36 N55. I think he goes by caleem, but someone did a carb legal S54 323i with no chassis modification. (If carb means can be smogged and passed for registration in California.)

Yeah, labor would kill the cost, I’m talking about a DIY project. But I don’t see why the chassis needs reinforcement beyond, typical subframe. People supercharge E46 M3’s without additional reinforcement.

I haven’t looked into engines beyond E9x, but every engine after about 2006 and prior to roughly 2011 just wants CAS, the DME, and specifically in N55’s case - the climate control buttons on CAN or else the electric fan runs at 100% all the time. My friend said for one of his old E39’s he made a stand-alone fan that kicked up from another sensor pretty cheaply so hardly even that is necessary.

If the automatic works, the manual definitely would too. No ABS or DSC but the emission equipment would be getting readings from all the sensors it wants to see

All I6’s from BMW mate to any other I6 transmissions AFAIK. So you could even use a ZHP trans, Z4M trans, or the M3 trans. Then your engine placement would be based on where it ends up with the trans hooked up, but probably would be fairly natural as it’s another I6 with similar dimensions.

I feel the electronics are what scare people from even imagining these projects, but all they really want is the CAS and DME, and the emission equipment would work as if it’s the original car. You’d need to make a custom mount to weld in some plates for engine mounts, maybe massage the frame rails (as was necessary for the N55 in E36), but that’s really it.

To be clear, I’m a 21 year old business student that hasn’t done an engine swap, so put me in my place if I’m wrong. But I’ve witnessed some insane engine swaps online and in person. And even though I’m in finals week, I spent about 35 hours last week reading about these systems as I was looking into retrofitting “active seats” and doing further research on my comfort access E9x keyless start retrofit into my E46.

Yer a youngin lol. I can't talk, I'll be 30 this year. I've just been doing imaginary builds for about 9 years more.

So the good thing about the N73 is you don't technically *need* an intake manifold and throttle body. I could grab some stainless/CF tubes and fab up a quick set of ITBs which would cut the height down a LOT. It's not very wide, I'd say it's narrower than any BMW V8. For reference an LQ4=LS1 is about 630mm wide. According to this guy from Reddit, the widest point of the N74 is 625 mm. I'd assume the N73 isn't too far off. The rest of the engine is around 525mm wide. Not bad right?

Length...a bit longer than a straight 6. From belts to backplate 810mm

Height, about 670 mm. LS1 is about 700. Dimensionally, it should work...AND the oil pan sump is in the right spot compared to the older M7x V12.

Trans is a toss up. I think it doesn't follow any specific pattern based on comparing images across the internets. Maybe the V8 trans can be slightly modified? The N73 is based heavily on the N62.

Electronics aren't an issue, to me at least. The CAS doesn't really care about too much, if you feed it just enough signals to be happy I think it'll work. Ironically, I spent almost all Saturday researching the keylessGO/comfort access system. Feel free to PM me if you want to throw ideas around.

Love this, great read. The S85 (although granted is very closely related to) and the S65 shared the same transmission mounting design, from what I've read. Perhaps BMW has swayed away from V12 specific mounts to cut costs. Now you got me damn curious. Where did you find engine dimensions? I legitimately want to try to N55 swap my E46 once I get a career - I'll roomie over renting my own place to do it if I have to. Dimensions of BMW motors is something I struggle finding.

I know the answer is “yes,” but just want someone to verify: the transmission input shaft spins even in neutral as long as the clutch isn’t depressed, correct?

I think I’ve narrowed down the ticking sound I’ve been bitching about since installing the Valeo SMF clutch kit as being the throwout bearing, and I’m trying to confirm. The ticking sound has gotten worse in the last few months so I need to address it soon. I assume I just got a bad bearing, or Valeo’s QC isn’t great for that part, because Vas described a similar sound.

Taking my car into the local dealer to have oil done this Thursday, but figured I'd ask here before I brought it in.
I just noticed late last week that my passenger side floor mat and carpet were soaked, causing a pretty nauseating smell in the cab, and I can't figure out for the life of me where the water is coming from. At first I thought an AC vent was dripping but couldn't find any wet sources in the footwell. Figured it may be a seal but all around the door and in the door jam the weather seals are plush. My sunroof has been broken for over a year and I couldn't imagine how water would reach the footwell from roof, let alone now after it has never happened before.
My brother suggested it might be a clogged sunroof drain(?) but I'm not sure where that would be to even inspect, plus I can't even open my sunroof right now.
Any ideas?

No idea. Dealer oil changes are expensive, do you have a local indy who can do it?

Possibly vapor barrier. When that happened to my X3 I left a boxfan in the floorboard overnight and it was totally dry by morning with no smell.
