Fair enough, lads. Don't see very many NB coupe interiors come through, so I thought I'd ask.

The driver seat seems to be in pretty bad shape, not sure how much of it is repairable. So you plan on replacing the estoril interior with this?
I think NB or Cinny would look pretty awesome against the Estoril.

Alcanteara or bust
2 Siberian Huskies + Alcantara. I can't even imagine.

Dude, do not touch those M3 seats! These are pretty rough.
I like my M3 seats a lot, but breaking up the all black interior will always be in the back of my mind. I can't really explain it; suffice it to say I'm weird.

That driver's side seat does look rough, even from the distance of those photos i.e. it's probably pretty darn worn.

Personally, I love my E46 M3 seats and I would never go back to the stock seats, even for pristine Natural Brown. I agree on the all black interior needing a bit of contrast. My plan is to either find a Cinnamon M3 interior (hah!) or source some good condition silver cube. My sister's 330Xi black interior has silver cube and I definitely appreciate the contrast. The trick is finding a set that's not in rough shape.

That's a good price. It's usually $300 for sides/rear and an extra $150 for windshield when you're talking about a quality film.

The price comes down to which brand/quality tint you use & where you are located.

I WAS HIT WITH THE FURY OF 1000 SUNS

Not really but I guess that's what you were talking about. It's too rough of a finish to reflect any worse than the dash.

The bright color does take away from the "tucked away in the black cockpit looking out" feeling, but I had already ruined that with the Android headunit. So the bright trim just makes the bright screen less distracting.

Does anyone else's ZHP run cold? Since I've gotten it it has never gone past half way into hot, and sits at 1/4 way into cold https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170819/161587510e4e9e359101ecebe5ed901e.jpg
My brothers sits at halfway the whole time.
Even when I was really pushing her as much as I ever had down backcountry roads(hard pulls and constant downshifting, doing 80 in 3rd, you get what I'm saying, driving gloves were brought out) it never passed that middle.
I suppose it's a good thing? Only difference between our cars is I have a cone air intake while his is stock, but I've heard negative things about cone filters(drawing in hot air from engine).
Penny for your thought?

I use Red Line's stuff, but honestly it could just be snake oil. Doubt it does anything to damage the fuel delivery system. Some people swear by Techron.

Has your cooling system been refreshed? Sounds like a failing thermostat, they are designed to fail open. Also, when pushing my car hard, the water temp usually drops a few degrees as the cooling system does its job.

No it hasn't been refreshed, but it does move around just not past that point. It was in a couple months ago when I got my oil changed and they did a full inspection, do you think they would have picked that up in their tests?

This: I'd say something is definitely off.

In addition to the above, I'll simply ask if your other 3 needles are accurate? For example, when I took my cluster apart to swap to US gauge faces, I didn't get all 4 needles back on perfectly. My speedo is ~3mph off, and my temperature gauge sits at 12:30, instead of 12:00. It annoys the eff out of me, but taking that thing out/apart again isn't something I'm dying to do.

Top-tier gasoline has cleaners/additives in it. That said, BMW has approved Techron, so it shouldn't hurt anything, as stated earlier.

My temp gauge needle did the same thing. You need to adjust the position of the needle to the right. You'll have to remove and disassemble the cluster and adjust the needle with your hands. It's an easy job shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so.

Watch the video on this page:

Prestovie, the E46, unmodified and in good condition, should run with the temp needle always at the top, roughly 11:55, on the clock.

Your t-stat has failed and is stuck open, so the coolant never gets up to full temps.

This is exactly what happened on my car.

I'm pretty sure a dealership "inspection" won't pick this up.

You can just verify the actual coolant temp by utilizing the built-in cluster functions for coolant temp readout.

I'm kinda thinking of buying cinnamon M3 sears for the ZHP. Since my seats are dyed cinnamon you can start to see wear now on the driver side. I don't mind the seats are 15 years old and the guy who dyed them for me has no problem re-doing them, he's super cool. But since it's only really the driver seat I've thought about M3 seats. I really do like the sport seats tho they look better than M3 seats to me. The M3 seats look gigantic! Any thoughts on a swap or pics? You think it would be a good idea or I should just re-dye here and there?

I think it's supposed to sit on top of the plastic shroud...not certain though. You should be able to push it up from the bottom (with the undertray removed).

Removing the bumper is pretty easy if you want to get in there and look around.

So silly me posted this originally in my Build thread.. I really need to pay more attention to where I'm posting lol, BUT

So can anyone please enlighten me on what vacuum lines sit behind the Intake Manifold and go connected back here? I'm 100% sure this is the source of my vacuum leak on my car causing me to have these codes.
I've used PaSoft and it tells me plenty but now I know what the source of it is and I have no idea where the vacuum line is, so before I rip apart my intake manifold, can someone help me diagnose WHAT HOSE GOES HERE lol

The exit point with the "ripped hose" is what I'm talking about, I attached that piece of hose hoping to plug it but I'd rather solve it once and for all rather than my BS 'home remedy' lol

Thank you all in advance

I would hook the passenger seatbelt into the seat tilt lever. That should prevent it from flopping around when the wind hits it.

I'm talking about the section of belt between my shoulder and the B pillar. It's a much longer span than in the sedan, and I can feel the belt buffeting on my shoulder. Kinda weird to describe, I guess.

Oh... that's very strange that it's buffeting like that. Perhaps you can buy one of those shoulder pad things that I see in some cars and slide it back there?

Finished my PSS10 + Turner sway bar install.

When cornering hard at low speeds (under 45), I get a clunk about 50% of the time.

Im thinking this is it, sway bar hitting the control arm.

My adjustable end links are at their shortest option. The suspension is at its highest setting.

Any ideas?

No dice ☹️pre-facelift uses the same as the M3 front grilles which are a good bit narrower. Making all four platforms (coupe and sedan pre/post-facelift) have interchangeable grilles would be way too logical! Also be advised the ECS grilles for post-facelift has a seam across the top, kind of giving it that (Pre-LCI) E90 mustache look.

Yeah I agree with you on that. The carbon fiber would get lost with the black. It won't be as noticeable or stand out like Imola Red. I saw it for the first time on an Alpine White e46 M3 and thought it looked beautiful. Then I started considering it on my car but now that I think about it I don't think I'll want it on my car.

My car is black I'll see if I can dig up a pic with the CF for you. It was very subtle with the black.
There are two different kinds of shells:
The most expensive will be the shell that's made entirely of CF.
the second is a CF overlay on a plastic shell. That's what I had. They were $200 from TMS

I believe the foam thingy may be part of the mirror assembly and is not sold separately (hence no part number for it). If you see the following link for the mirror assembly, you will see that the foam is part of it:

Honestly, as long as there's an E46 sedan that hasn't had its mirrors pillaged, it's pretty easy to get these things. All they had were pre-facelift 323's and 328's, but thankfully the mounting hardware is the same for those as the later cars. :)

there's a line etched in both the splined shaft, and the wheel - did you see those? just 'em up and you're good.

did you make any other suspension changes?

i just replaced the tie rod assemblies in the black Touring last night and the steering wheel, even though i did my best to adjust the new units to be exactly the same length as the old ones, is still pointing to about 10 o'clock.

Yep, I lined them up! Unless I'm going blind...

So far I've done: Koni yellows, Lemmy FCAs (reused the FCABs you put in), tie rods, 26mm M3 coupe front bar, 20mm xi rear bar.

My to-do list now is: H&R front springs (I put rears in last weekend, FCP delivers new upper front perches tomorrow so maybe this weekend), TC Kline camber plates/hats, adjustable rear control arms, upper/lower inner/outer rear arm bushings, adjustable end links.

I bought some UUC adjustable rear links, but they're designed for aftermarket sway bars, not OEM. Kind of a bummer, but that's life.

You should use adjustable links to remove preload if the car is lowered. The H&R sport springs aren't very low, and I admittedly would probably be fine without. But, I plan on getting her on a track next year, so I'd rather do it right.

You're on factory springs, yes? If so then you have no worries that I see.

Need someone to weigh in on this; when you're driving and you come to a stop sign... is it more fuel efficient to come to a complete stop and start in 1st gear from the stop, or to come to a very low roll then get through in second gear? Asking for a friend [emoji102]

I would guess on rolling through, as stopping takes longer and wastes more energy.

Rolling through uses less fuel.

It might be more cost effective to stop at a stop sign vs. risk a ticket for a moving violation, fines, points on your license & insurance premium increase.

Going back, any time you hit the brakes you're wasting fuel, because you'll have to use more to accelerate. The solution of course is not hitting the brakes.

I doubt it removed dye. It's designed for interiors, so that shouldn't be happening.

Sometimes cleaning stuff reveals it's true condition. It probably really is that worn.

Does anyone else experience trouble shifting into second gear when at higher RPM's? I'll be trying to get a first gear pull in off the line and I can't for the life of me shift smoothly into second. I almost have to wait a second in between the shifts or I totally miss the bite point and the whole car lurches

The clutch delay valve (CDV) connects the hard line to the soft line of the clutch line. I believe it's designed to help reduce clutch wear by slowing the movement of the clutch hydraulic fluid (brake fluid in our cars) and thus the engagement of the clutch. It makes the clutch grab point mushy. Removing it is pretty easy and makes clutch pedal feel much better.

Below is one DIY. He uses a replacement CDV that is modified with a larger bore. You don't have to do that, you can simply remove the factory CDV and directly connect the soft line to the hard line.

It actually increases clutch wear. Since the fluid is released more slowly, there's more slipping. The effect is probably minute, but on the other side it might be more gentle on the transmission.

Yup, I didn't really articulate my idea well. But minimize drive train shock, rather than preserve clutch wear.

My MPG needle has gotten really wonky in the past 36 hours, and I'm hoping someone can tell me if it's indicative of an underlying issue?

It'll sit at 50mpg until about 5mph, and then spike over to 12mpg really fast. When I come to a stop, it'll die back to 50mpg as I'm coasting (under 10mph). Then it'll raise to, and sit at, 30mpg while at a dead stop.

Yep. I've read some posts on the E39 and M52 E46s where people say it could be a vacuum leak, or it could be indicative of a fuel pump problem. The car is running fine, which is what's throwing me for a loop. Fuel consumption to and from Raleigh this weekend seemed normal.

Older BMWs worked on a vacuum AFAIK, but I remember Terra saying somewhere that the E46 fuel economy gauge is a calculated value based on injector pulse width (how long an injector sprays) and current speed, and possibly other values

It is not supposed to sit at 30mpg when at a dead stop. It'll sit somewhere around it or slightly higher when coasting in neutral if at really low speeds, but it shouldn't be there at a dead stop.

Try a battery reset... disconnect for 15 minutes and plug back in, see if that helps.

I personally like a little higher that 4150, but that's personal preference. I had 4100k OEM in the X3, and replaced with 4500k Morimoto XBs and loved them. Great price for a quality bulb.

With that said, I really hate the 5000k bulbs in the ZHP right now (hoping I still have that pair of 85122s sitting around here somewhere).

They're still running strong, and are right at 3 years old. I had an issue with one bulb flickering when it fired up (the X3 uses D1S bulbs), figured out it was the integrated D1S igniter, but the issue resolved itself before I got around to sending them back to TRS for an exchange.

If I can't find the 85122s I have in storage, I'll be ordering a pair of XBs (that way I'll finally get around to doing the clear lenses too).

I think TiAg really benefits from the black trim. Edit: meaning I think it looks really good with the added contrast.

Looks nice as is. And it’s something you don’t see everyday on an e46 sedan. If you have matte black grills and matte black window trims I say go for it. If glossy black, then maybe consider gloss black trims?

I totally agree, it’s felt like something has been missing for awhile, especially considering the rear lower bumper trim is also TiAg which I’ve seen in gloss black that looks much better

That’s what I’m afraid of is looking like any one 325i on the road. Both my kidneys and window trim is gloss, I like the idea of more gloss, been meaning to also paint my mirrors gloss black to match

I vote black as well! Quick question, I’m planning to invest in a set of winter tires. Should I buy these for $400 or invest in a set of Bridgestone for $200 more. I didn’t expect winter tires to be so expensive. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171012/9039e7ba229725b5fe6f7cb9d67b1dff.png I couldn’t find any review on these Hankooks but Bridgestone has plenty of reviews. I have Bridgestone summer tires.

Never skimp on tires, the most crucial safety aspect of your car. If there aren't any reviews of the Hankook but plenty on the Bridgestone, go for the Bridgestone.
I've had a couple of sets of Bridgestone winter tires and can attest to how awesome they are.

At one point I had only Bridgestone tires... lol

S-04's for the summer daily set, RE-11's for the track, and LM-25's for the winter.
My next set (probably ordering tomorrow) are practically Bridgestone RE003's... I'll be ordering the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 to replace my summer tires. If I didn't have to make the trip to Ohio next week, I wouldn't be ordering summer tires yet, but... do what you gotta do. :(

Matte. Gloss would chip too easily and look a lot worse when it does chip.

I don't recommend skimping on tires, but I "skimped" on winter tires. I have the General Altmax Arctic tires. The reviews were positive especially for the price. Going back, I would get the 225s over the 205 width tires. Last winter, we only had a few snow days. But I also read that the pros and cons of going narrower in the winter aren't that clear cut...except pricing.

That said Continental Wintercontact tires seem to rank pretty well and are cheaper than WS-80s. It's worth it to poke around reading reviews. Some of them might be on European sites as they seem to be a bit more serious about winter tires.

Ah I forgot about the chipping, I probably won’t even have to paint the trim pieces(though I probably should and will) because it’s matte black underneath the paint right now. Just strip it and sand it down

I like the tread pattern. Though I don't think it's as good in the wet as the best performers.

I have Michelin PSS now and they are really bad in the rain. Drive over any standing water and there is just no grip. The dws 06 I had earlier were just awesome. I know they are completely different types of tires for different purposes but the difference is quite surprising.

yeah, i'm thinking about these for the X3 next spring, too. they actually come in the size i am looking for (235/55/18 or 245/50/19... depending on what wheels i run), and the price is good.

that's weird. i find PSS amazing in the rain. i couldn't stand driving on DWS... i drove a ZHP with them (stock 18" sizes) and they were so squirmy.

What batteries does everyone use in their cars nowadays? I replaced my OE BMW Battery 5+ years ago with a Duralast 49-DL. Is this still the go to battery? Is there something better to go with now?

Car is rough starting this past week and with the drop in temperature this morning it barely started. Without checking (I don't have a multimeter) I'm guessing its the old battery, and if it isn't the battery it needs to be replaced anyway.

I don't think the 49-DL exists anymore. I remember looking for one but couldn't find one anywhere, so I ended up going with the 94R-DLG. I've had zero problems with it. It has more CCA than my factory battery. Replacing my 10-year old factory battery also helped solve my speaker pop issue.

It is on the pricey side though, I think I paid $165?

From the research I've done, the 49-DL battery was an H8, and has been superseded by the H8-DLG. It has 50 more CCA and the same CA according to Autozones website.

I remember some people saying the 49-DL was shorter than the stock battery and needed to be braced in a bit for proper fitment, but I never had that issue. The H8-DLG has the exact same dimensions as the 49-DL so I think this is what I'll go with. The other batteries being recommended on Autzones website were $200, this one is $155.

The other batteries don't have the same CCA as the H8-DLG either, and I live in a cold climate so I will definitely need the help.

With as difficult to find as they’re becoming (and expensive), I wonder if we’ll start becoming better off painting chrome grilles with proper black paint and clear coat. Probably less than $40 in supplies and some patience, and I’d think the outcome could be just as good.

Prep/sand/prime on Friday after work, hit with coats of black paint during college football commercial breaks on Saturday, hit with coats of clear coat during NFL commercial breaks on Sunday. Bring inside Sunday night, let cure 30 days, done. It of course would help to have an extra pair of chrome grilles to work on, so you don’t drive around without for 33 days.

I literally just bought some off ebay for $20 the other day. Quality is pretty good for the price. They just have these little nubs on the back of the grills from being pulled out of the molding that need to be removed/sanded down and they will be fine.

I bought some from Khoalty years ago and they worked great, but eventually broke after a couple years.

I wouldn't mind getting a nice pair of glossy piano black grills, but the OEM ones are ridiculously expensive.
