Nah I haven't touched the suspension on this car
The rear shocks are original from 12/2004, so I have to assume the mounts are too.

yep, those be the ones. the nice part, besides the fact that they are nice (duh), is that they allow you to remove the shocks without taking the trunk apart.
i think koni has stuff on sale now, grab some FSDs! i might get some for the wifey's Touring.

Has 125k miles, 3rd owner, eisenmann exhaust, brand new summer tires on original CSL rims, M3 cluster, OEM struts/shocks on lowering springs (seems too low for my taste)... Been on sale for about 3 months now, last posted price was 15.000€ which is around $16.300 and he got no bites. Tried to talk him down over the phone and he says he would take 14k € (15.300 USD).
No doubt a lot of work went into this car (G-Power kit alone is over $3k), but it still seems a bit steep to me. 3 months up and it didn't sell.
What do you guys think?

Should I worry about replacing spring pads when I change things out? I'm just going to buy the ECS "cup kit install kit." It's a $40 difference to get new spring pads, and I'll probably put H&R springs in eventually.

I did, for the fronts. I didn't bother for the rear as I am still on stock springs and they are separate from the damper. I think it is one of those "might as well" kinda situations...

I remember it last time, too. It's still a sweet ass car, but seems like the owner is pricing it like a house -- $3k of improvements adds $5k to the value. Or are M-sport 330's just hella expensive over there?

I replaced them front and rear simply because like San, I was already in there and why not. That said, original ones from the factory were in okay shape.

Though that is a pretty cool spring and strut installation guide on that ECS kit page.

$576 out the door, plus whatever I get back from eBates ($17.28 allegedly), and the $50 Koni MIR. And I use PayPal Credit for all stuff like this, so 6mo. financing. Not that I couldn't just pay it off, but time-value of money formulae say it's best not to. Stupid economics degree, always impacting my thought processes [emoji849]

Yup, it's quite pricey. Cars (at least BMW) are generally more expensive when compared to US standards. Standard facelift 330Ci is anywhere from $6k to 10k, M Club Sport is pretty rare and when it pops up it's always over $11k and with 120-130k miles and more. Even e39 530i M Sport, 5 speed is around $7-8k.
I was hope for cool cheap bimmers. :shifty

Anybody know what is the thickness of the wires that go into the LCM? I am trying to hook my AEs to pin 41 of the LCM. I already have the bushing contact (part# 61130008998)...just need some wires to extend it to the AE wiring into the 'drug-bin'. I was looking at 20AWG here:

Redline will recommend the ATF. That's what I used, but many around here have used the MTL. Honestly I wish I would have used it in this mild weather. The ATF just feels too notchy to me.

Anybody know what is the thickness of the wires that go into the LCM? I am trying to hook my AEs to pin 41 of the LCM. I already have the bushing contact (part# 61130008998)...just need some wires to extend it to the AE wiring into the 'drug-bin'. I was looking at 20AWG here:

Thanks man. Yes, I believe the LCM wires are the same thickness as the other interior wiring (homelink wires, interior lights etc). Also, I am guessing Silicone insulation is better than PVC? This is what I was planing on buying:

I measured my extra rear view pigtail as 20AWG (it's a 0.08mm difference between 20 and 22 AWG). I think you'll be okay.

Thanks again. I will go with the 20AWG wires then. A quick google search shows me that silicone insulation is better than PVC because its more flexible (easier to route) and is able to handle higher temperatures.

The auto was GM. Same one made its way into the X3 also. It seems like people don't have the same hatred with it in RWD like they do with AWD.

I think the autos came in two flavors - GM and ZF. The ZF ones were notorious for the "no reverse" issues.

so now that my swap is done and my odometer is back to where its suppsoed to be.. I went ahead and scheduled my driver and passenger side airbag recall at the local dealer. they have the parts in stock so next wednsday ill go for 2 hours they said and it will be done.
i'm curious how that will go down with the swap lol.
i have a feeling they will try to say its not covered due to the swap or M3 cluster change out or that even though i retained my original airbags.. i modified my steering wheel by getting it custom wrapped.
it will be interesting :shifty

Keep us posted. BMW Canada gave me a hard time with my driver's side airbag recall.

I think you should be fine, as long as the airbag replacement fits in your wheel. Though watch out for them scratching up your lower plastic trim.

I don't know how anyone can screw that up. It honestly takes 30 seconds to swap the airbag and at no point should anything come near the trim.

I think you should be fine, as long as the airbag replacement fits in your wheel. Though watch out for them scratching up your lower plastic trim.

I don't know how anyone can screw that up. It honestly takes 30 seconds to swap the airbag and at no point should anything come near the trim.
You would think.. I had to go back to the dealership after getting mine done because either they forgot to plug the horn part back in or they had it pinched to where it wouldn't work. And I like to think I never use my horn but I learned the frustrating way that it wasn't working. Person in front of me was on their phone and we had a green arrow. Took so long for the person to realize it was green that I pretty much ran a red light behind them...

Go with a brand like APEX, Turner, etc.
Not everyone agrees, but I really like the way stud conversion looks. Only reason I opted out of it was because the 75mm kits were going to be too long for the way my wheels are shaped. CH or Arc-8s are a little more "stud-friendly." Someone is selling a brand new APEX 75mm kit over on M3forum right now for $100 shipped, which is about a $35 discount.

Based on the color wheel, Charlie pretty much nailed it with those lugs and red center caps. Directly across from red is a soft turquoise. Your interior certainly complicates things.

I've had studs with standard black nuts before. They looked pretty good, but with the salty crap we get in the winter, they were a bitch to take off since they rusted together. I tried to take a couple of nuts off and the studs started coming out with 'em; the nuts were practically seized onto the studs. I got fed up and removed them, going back to wheel bolts. I did keep a couple of the studs to use as wheel hangers, however, which totally gets rid of the problem with wheel bolts. Win.
I will be getting red BBS caps with the gold lettering as soon as I can stomach the insane cost of a set.
In your case, if you're totally committed to studs, then get black ones. Black is compatible with everything. I would stick with wheel bolts in your case since you live in New York and it's a salty mess there in the winter.
Also keep in mind that if you get studs, you should be replacing them every year or two. If you tracked your car, you would have to replace them every season.

Thank you for this. I could not, for the life of me, figure out why everyone seems to want to change out rust-free-comes-off-every-time wheel bolts for exposed steel threads on studs. I have one wheel hanger that adds 15 seconds to every wheel swap and that seems to be the only drawback of the bolts.

i use bolts and don't use a hanger. i get the wheel on and centered, and then hold it in place with my foot at the bottom of the wheel/tire while i get the first bolt in.

That's a good tip. I've never had a problem without a hanger either, even with the X3's boat anchors. Must just be because I'm so freaking jacked.

That was definitely the nice part about studs. It was far easier to swap between my three sets of wheels, since my CH's weigh a metric butt-ton and my winter wheels require spacers. I didn't have to maintain two different sets of attaching hardware.

The hangar is a necessity for my personally. The CHs weigh so much that I'm tired as heck by the time I end up putting on my third wheel. By then I'm struggling to hold the wheel up, let alone keep it centered while I fish for the bolts that somehow managed to roll away from me. lol
I'm fat, weak, and lazy. There can't be a worse combo for doing car work. lmao

For really heavy wheel or if I'm lazy, I lower the car on the jack so I only have to lift the tire an inch or two then put a long pry bar under the tire and lift. It's a breeze with the leverage the pry bar gives you

No you're right about the 90 for whichever axle you're putting spacers on. But it'll be too long (IMO) for the wheels without. I'd go 75mm for the no-spacer wheels.

Pulled the rear seat to run my backup camera wiring and noticed (1) that the rubber has been torn off all around the fuel pump, so I guess that's been replaced and (2) that there is an extra plug just hangin out under the seat. Anyone know what that little guy is?

04 sedan and I have that wire too. It is believed that the wire is used to plug the car in while it is in transport from the factory to keep the battery charged or something.

so now that my swap is done and my odometer is back to where its suppsoed to be.. I went ahead and scheduled my driver and passenger side airbag recall at the local dealer. they have the parts in stock so next wednsday ill go for 2 hours they said and it will be done.
i'm curious how that will go down with the swap lol.
i have a feeling they will try to say its not covered due to the swap or M3 cluster change out or that even though i retained my original airbags.. i modified my steering wheel by getting it custom wrapped.
it will be interesting :shifty

Getting the oil sign on my dash this past week, comes on sometimes and not others. Owned the car for about 6k miles now, oil change necessary? Someone told me that BMW is known to flash oil at pretty short intervals. How often do you guys change? Told myself to do it after the first 5k(whoops) and in 10k intervals after that

33326770817 is the M3/Z4M version of the RTAB, you should probably get that one if you are sticking with OEM.

Not Peter, but yes - thats correct. On the non-Ms, the outer lower is a bushing. Its recommended to replace that with the ball joint that Peter suggested. I did the same to my car a few months ago.

Guys... I need help.
Topped off my oil today, full synthetic, and she started acting really weird. Like not good. First the engine was sloshing it around making the whole car shake, then when it was trying to idle it jumped between 1k and 500 a few times before it came to a stop at 600(normal right?). Well when I revved it I got backfire for the first time owning this car, and it was this shallow gurgling backfire. Waiting a couple minutes and did it again and now it's throwing white smoke out of the back... smells burnt. YAY she's burning oil! Checked inside the oil cap:

Starting it up again now and going to drive it around for a bit, still backfiring after revving.
My other guess is that it might be bc I topped it off with Speedway synthetic, checked the last change and it was all Mobil 1, so it might be a reaction of sorts :/

Not an e46 question, but here we go. The alternator on my Saab is bad. I need to use jumper cables to start it. I'm thinking about driving to Houston (3 hour trip) and trade-in the car over there. I won't turn off the car until I arrive to the dealer.
Does this sound ok ? I don't want to create or experience additional issues with my plan.
I don't think the battery will last so long without the alternator recharging it.

That's what I figured... best bet right now is head gasket, turns out it's 12hrs in labor which is like $1800 at the dealership, brother says we can do it in 18hrs
I've got an oil change on Tuesday so I'll have them pressure test the cooling system to see if it's actually the coolant leaking in
Not excited about this to say the least, just did a $3600 clutch job and bought all new rubber, thought I'd be done at least for the year

You will not make it if your alternator is bad.
Look at the symptoms...
If the car won't start on its own, jump start it. Take the jumper leads off right after jumping. Does the car continue running just fine, with no loss of power or electrical function? If so, your battery is probably bad. In this scenario, the car will continue working just fine as long as it's running. Once you stop it, it won't start up again.
If the car does not continue working, or if electrical function is greatly reduced, your alternator probably isn't charging the battery, and as a result is running off the battery. In this scenario, you need to replace the alternator before you consider making any longer trips, otherwise you'll have to constantly stop, hook up jumper cables, let it charge up for a while, and then rinse + repeat.

E46 M3 seats. They are extremely comfortable and it holds you in place really well when you rip through corners.

Haha noooo, $10k with 99,949miles on it. Previous owner was a massive enthusiast and tracked the car once every month or two. So much of an enthusiast that he never put it through an auto wash, hand washes only, something that I've continued...

Sorry to hear of your issues...that's a problem that no one wants to have. If you are definitely burning coolant out of the exhaust, then you've got your work cut out for you. I don't know how familiar you are with the M54 engines, but just 'changing the headgasket' in 99 out of 100 cases isn't going to fix your issue. If an M54 is burning coolant, and/or mixing coolant with the oil, then it very likely the car has been overheated at some point in the past. When that happens, the cylinder head and/or aluminum block warps, which will pull the head bolt threads out of the block.
You see so many E46's these days listed on Craigslist and other classified sites advertising 'slight coolant leak, just needs a headgasket' for cheap. Unfortunately, the best and least expensive way to fix the issue is to just replace the engine with a known good one. I got my wife's '01 X5 with only 92k miles for dirt cheap because someone didn't address the cooling system and it overheated. I bought another M53B30 with 107k miles for $750 and swapped it in, and it has been running fine since. I actually did the same thing for an '05 ZHP late last year...car had been overheated, so I found another $750 M54B30 and swapped in the ZHP cams.
If you truly want to try repairing your current engine, before you pull it apart loosen each head bolt and re-torque them. If none of them strip out while re-torquing, then the block may be ok. You will still need to get the head fully checked of course. If the head bolt threads do strip, and you still want to use that block, you will need to Timersert each bolt hole. You'll also have to pull the entire engine and have the block surfaced so that it is flat.
Hoping for the best outcome for you in this...just know that swapping in a headgasket isn't going to fix it.

Thanks so much for the advice, it hurts to hear it but it is appreciated. I'm currently at the dealership waiting for them to finish changing the oil, and I told them to do a pressure test on the cooling system. The guy kind of dismissed it because I told him it hasn't been blowing smoke out of the exhaust lately, just last week... so hopefully they actually do thorough check.
Jeez getting a new block? I told myself that I'll drive her until the engine dies, then rebuild it and keep going, but financially that'd be kind of difficult right now. When I said that I though these things would be happening further down the line...
Guess we'll see what they come back with, but that's a good call on re-torquing everything, I'll mention that to my brother. He suggested we get the whole gasket set for the block and just replace everything while we're in there. This weekend is sure going to be handful lol

Yup, looked as good as OE to me. Changed up all 4 hoses last year along with the reservoir. I too went with Rein since the price difference was significant.

My grandparents are moving into an assisted living community, and want to sell their cars. One of which, a 2003 Acura with 94k on the clock, might make a decent daily.

I've been trying to find reasons not to take it on, honestly. Well, reasons that won't offend my grandfather when I politely decline the offer. I could always take the "having 2 coupes just isn't practical" approach.

Dude get the Acura for a daily. I was driving 1k a week when I bought my ZHP. I got 100k on it real quick. If I had a daily back then, I would probably still have under 100k on it.
Now that I've had a daily driver for the last 5 years, I barely put any miles on my car and I have the option of driving the ZHP on the nice days and haven't really driven it in the rain for years... It great having that option

I totally get that. In 48 months, I only put 31k on the X3. My Mazda only had 77k after 7 years. But honestly my fear of using the ZHP for company driving isn't the miles, it's all the rock chips, etc. that would inevitably come from driving up and down the perpetual road construction on I-85. I plan on keeping this thing for a long time, so unnecessary abuse like that is something I'd like to avoid. It's not like this car doesn't get driven, because it definitely does [emoji51]

Alright so this might be a weird question, but do you guys ever have "weird" dreams about your cars? Like I constantly have dreams/nightmares that include situations where I'm trying to come to a stop suddenly and my brakes are just too soft, or I miss stop signs bc I don't brake in time. Alright guys, another question I've been pondering; should I take the stickers off? When I purchased my ZHP it came with a few stickers around some of the back windows, and lately I've been really yearning for that clean, stock look (removed front splitters, want to repaint lower bumper trim back to gloss black, etc) and these stickers are standing out like a sore thumb. I myself added the Bimmerforum decal to the rear window and it's just pissing me off bc one of the letters are crooked... and I barely use the site anymore. Seriously. The gold and pictures of women are a little too Trumpian for my taste. I really don't understand their angle.
I like the packaging and color, and you are gonna love driving on FSD's!
The ride is far more comfortable than I was expecting. I'm really amazed at how much smoother it is than with the worn OE shocks.

Great to hear! I remember putting FSD's on my Mazda and being unimpressed initially, but the ride really smoothed out after ~200 miles. The ZHP felt like a Cadillac straight out of the garage, so now I'm excited to get some more miles on them.

Is there a simple way to know if it's time to replace the steering guibo? I'm used to the driveshaft guibos in the e36 letting you know it was their time by shredding. Apparently the e46 steering guibo doesn't even show cracks when worn.

I have replaced 2 of them in the past.
First one was at 113k and the other one at 126k. Both of them were toast.

I haven't used them but I was actually just at Shade Tree Garage in Raleigh today with my car getting a PPI done for the new owner and that place is really neat. They only work on BMWs and appear to have really good reviews. Maybe your buddy could check their price?

I haven't bought one but I have used yelp to find detailing places, and then research from there. There was a highly rated place mentioned in some magazine that also happened to be close by, though the prices seem to reflect. If I needed paint correction, that would be the place to go. The other option would be a friend of a friend that does on the side, or getting my lazy ass to try it myself.

Ok so all of a sudden I'm getting the airbag light on my dash... all recalls are up to date so I have no idea why it's lighting up. Wire disconnection? Idk, anybody else experience this even after airbags were replaced(keep in mind replaced like 3 months ago)?

Mine's been on a while (voltage too high I think?) multimeter says it's okay. My next effort will be to try the occupant sensor bypass trick.
So I have an Anker smart charger thats supposed to output 2A into each of its 2 ports, that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket up front. Although my phone says its being charged, the battery percentage does not increase and may even decrease if i'm navigating and playing music through it. Could it be the socket needs to be replaced or is the charger the question?

I am in the midst of hooking up my AEs to the LCM pin 44 (similar to the euro city lights DIY: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?19488-DIY-E46-City-lights-OE-style-wiring)
Question: In terms of coding what do I need to do in order to activate pin 44? I currently have FL_DRL_MIT_RL (tail light DRL) and PO_ALS_DRL set to aktiv but that doesn't seem to cut it. The tail lights are on as DRL but there is no voltage on pin 44 for my AEs.

I would check the charging cable as well. I've had some charging cables start malfunctioning when they've been kinked so much. Just a thought.

I'd go by Target tomorrow, buy one of the Belkins and try it out. If it works better, you know it was the weak link. If not, return it and consider yourself one step closer to a diagnosis lol. I had to buy a Belkin in a pinch when I drove to buy my M3 seats (my $5 cheapo charger finally went to cheapo charger heaven), and was pleasantly surprised.

I have an Aukey or Anker or Belkin (can't remember which) and the charging is definitely not that slow. It's slower when using navigation and other data-heavy apps, but it still charges.
My first thoughts would be your charger or the USB cable is defective.

Not sure where else to post this thought thread wise, but I was just thinking about the "clichiness" of the mafia. Before you berate me hear me out lol, I thought it was funny to see in a for sale thread that when someone sold their car others not only congratulated them, but also mentioned looking forward to meeting the new site member. I'm not against this mentality, I think it's greatly confident, and it really showcases the difficulty of owning a BMW.
Here's what I mean: you own a ZHP and want to join a forum to talk about your vehicle, makes sense, but your options are limited; regular e46 guys hate you, M3 guys are better than you, e30 guys are too wise, e90 guys think you're outdated, and e36 guys are still in high school/early twenties chopping their cars into drift missiles. (Please take this satirically, I should point out, not to offend anyone who owns any of these fine bimmers).
There's really only one place you can go to talk about your ZHP with open arms, and it's not only cool but also demonstrative of the struggle of BMW ownership even within its own community.
What're your guys thoughts? Not trying to take any side on this, just want to start a discussion
