Bad ZHP for yelling lol seriously though...mine used to connect me to a Verizon error message, I tried resetting the module by unpluging the larger multi-pin harness from the back when the car was off, waiting a few minutes, tunring the car on, wating a few more minutes, then turning the car off again, and plugging everything back in. Now I get a Sprint error message... I'm unsure what to do at this point...very confusing.

Yup, 2 questions I think-

1. Is it possible to have BMW assist without Bluetooth (your car)

2. If that box is the Bluetooth module as you said then is it possible to have Bluetooth without BMW assist (mine)

Just did some digging and found a post on bimmerfest from 2009 stating that the module I have is bmw assist only...no bluetooth. :crying

I suspect that you're in the same boat.

Correct, however I believe you're still prewired for it. The only thing thats plugged into yours is probably the cable closest to the outside of the car, that one goes to the sharkfin. The one closest to the interior is the BMW assist.

I'm 95% sure yours has Bluetooth. Remove those 4, 8mm nuts holding the module in and take a pic. If it's a different PN than mine its probably got bluetooth, if it's the same...sol.

You have a the different module known as the ULF and therefore you should have bluetooth. That plug should go to your bluetooth antenna under the armrest.

Just realized that the vin on that bluetooth passkey card is not my vin. I used vin decoder and found out it came from a non zhp 330i that was made in 2004 as well. However, it has the same tech and connectivity packages as mine. I suspect that the previous owner bought this manual online and it came with that.
And the pass key worked?

While changing the transmission mounts, is it advisable to change the associated nuts and bolts as well??

Edit: and is this the right part number for the m3 tranny mounts that fits our cars? 22322282340...

I did mine a couple weeks ago. I have not read anything that suggests that the associated bolts and nuts need to be replaced when changing transmission mounts. They are not highly stressed fasteners. The torque specs are relatively low. I would be surprised if there's any reason to change them out.

Yes it for the tpms, but it works based on wheel/hub speed and does not have a pressure transducer on the wheel so you should be ok with having winter wheels on...

Called the dealer to get an estimate on a transmission fluid flush but said they don't recommend it unless i'm noticing a problem with it because it releases any gunk already inside and i could have problems in the future. Was surprised to hear this.

I think this is why some people recommend a drain-and-fill as opposed to a flush. The drain/refill doesn't stir up crap like the flush.

OK, so two random ZHP questions....

1) What's the consensus on the guibo/flex disc? My car only has 44,000 miles on it, but it's also going on 12 years old. I know rubber gets pretty hard over time. The reason I ask is the car will be on stands in a week or so getting wheels refurbed and I'll be under the car doing FCABs, and I was thinking of a couple of other easy things to do while I was under there. I don't want to just throw money at stuff unnecessarily, though. Has anybody changed it and noticed a significant difference in NVH?

2) When I get out of my car, there's quite a creaky sound coming from the left-rear suspension. I know it's the suspension unloading, but the creaky sound sounds like a pie tin or sheet metal. Any thoughts on mitigation? I should probably do a rear suspension refresh at some point, but it's down the list a little.

I say replace the guibo. It's a cheap PM. I'd look into RTAB's or RSM'S to eliminare the creak. Could even be the rear shock for that matter.

I've had the cover off before. Very easy to remove the cover, then assess how to remove the light. It's most likely fastened with a couple of screws accessible from under the cover.

Does anyone here have an oil temp gauge or otherwise log their oil temperatures?

As some of you know, I threw an M3 cluster in my ZHP. I've noticed that my oil temperature gets quite high when I'm booking it through one of my favorite local routes. Looks like it's getting to somewhere around 250-260º when I push it.

Seems a bit high, no? Under more normal driving it hovers right around 210º, but I would think the car should be able to handle aggressive street driving; it's not like it's being stressed out like it would be on a track.

My owner's manual doesn't list the cooling system capacity. I see ECS Tuning's refresh kits come with 1 Gallon of concentrate. Once mixed with 1 Gallon of distilled water that provides coverage for 2 gallons of cooling system capacity, or about 7.5L. I saw a post on a forum that said the systems capacity was 8.5L. Do I need to buy 2 gallons of concentrate? Thx!

Seems high, but I wouldn't know. Our engines don't have an oil cooler as far as I know, so it's not surprising if the temp rises a bit.

When I refilled my system after a cooling system overhaul, it took a little less than the two gallons of the 50:50 mix if I remember correctly.

Are the brake bleeder valve/nipples supposed to be different sizes? My rears are 9mm but the fronts were smaller. I used a 5/16" wrench and it worked. The calipers say BMW. :dunno

While on the topic of brakes, what's the go-to caliper of choice? OEM? Rebuilt caliper? have a squeak in my left front caliper and I'm fairly certain the piston is seized

Hey guys. Strange noise coming from engine bay...squeal at startup ...seems to be one of the pulleys or tensioners...any ideas? Increases in pitch when revs increase. Here's a video https://vimeo.com/157958751

The problem with driving it is if something does seize and the belt breaks at high rpm, it can grenade other stuff like the cooling reservoir, fan, radiator, or even put dimples in the hood.

I would remove the mechanical fan first and see if the noise is still there. If it is, then look at the pulleys and belts.

Either way look into doing the electrical fan mod

Going to pick up idler pulley and pulley tht goes on hydraulic tensioner...also the mechanical ac tensioner...will replace them this afternoon.

You know that sneezing man button on your steering wheel?

Press that button for 2-3 seconds, while keeping it pressed in, turn the ignition to the second position, keep it pressed for 2 or 3 more seconds and then release. It should say BT PAIRING on your radio display at that point. Pull out your phone and make sure bluetooth is on then search for devices like you would connect to anything else. Enter the PK and you're good to go.

Don't know exactly but it's a tad over 1.5qts I believe. Fill until it flows back out of the hole (as I'm sure you know).

Attempt pairing proceedure again after that. Any idea why transmissions have a fluid filter but diffs don't? Is it just the significantly more moving parts?

I don't know whether all transmissions have filters, but I would assume that some do because transmissions are much more complex (multiple gears, shaft, syncrhos, etc) and also have a greater variety of mechanical movement: both rotational (gears turning) and translational (dogs/collars moving back and forth as different gears are selected). There is, therefore, much greater possibility for metallic particles to be abraded. So filters are added to prevent further damage.

I have a non folded back seats and the cover in the trunk is sagging. I am not sure how it should be attached. There is a hole in the middle of it, but I don't see any spot where a clip can be attached. There are few spots where clips can be attached. I placed them, but the top section is still sagging.
It looks super annoying any time I am opening my trunk. I have a feeling that I am missing top cover, if such thing exists.

Actually clicked the overhaul kit link yesterday and saw it was no longer available. Appears as though they still have maintenance kits with a build your own feature to customize. Maybe they'll take the same approach with the overhaul kit in the future.

I figured when it happened that they would probably realign store priorities sooner or later, with ECS selling to the regular crowd and Turner concentrating on racing/Autocross crowd....but then again I don't know anymore than anyone else!

There really isn't much to it. I installed these in my sedan housing - I can't imagine the coupe housing being much different. Take cap off, take out old bulb, and put new bulb in. Spread out the heatsink ribbon and stuff it inside the housing along with the small resistor box. It's a tight fit, but doable. It's a lot easier if you take your headlight out.

Does look more configurable.....however why they made the most failure prone part of the cooling system (the expansion tank) optional and the lessor failure prone (the radiator) a requirement escapes me, it was like this with their previous layout as well where the radiator was mandatory. One of the reasons I ended up ordering from Tischer as they made the basic kit just the most failure prone parts, leaving the radiator and other items optional.

Ah. Sorry, I guess I did leave out a couple of components. I remove my intake and headlight washer system so often that I completely forget they exist and treat it as "part of the process". Woops...

The intake has to come out for access on the driver's side. On the passenger side, you'll run into the washer tank being in the way.
For the washers, personally I deleted them with a washer tank that doesn't have a pump for the headlight washers, so it's super easy for me. For you, all of your fluid will leak out when you remove your headlight washer nozzles, so be prepared to either suck out all the fluid ahead of time or to refill it with a new bottle when you're done.

Getting to the bulbs are the reason why I recommend removing the headlight. The actual bulb swap is super easy, it's just getting to it that's the time consuming part.

PA Soft question: How do you clear a Service Engine Soon (SES) light? I was fiddling around with my sister's new (to her) car using PA Soft to reprogram the odometer from kilometers to miles, and then the SES light came on and has stayed on. I only programmed basic stuff in the IKE and ZKE. Would "Clear DTC" do it?

There are two errors I did find that might have triggered it unrelated to using PA Soft, a fault with an O2 sensor, and a misfire in cylinder 5. Both were marked but not currently present.

not sure if this has been asked yet, but does any else's HVAC control unit come on at random temp settings when you turn it on?

about 50% of the time, when i turn it on it will set the temp at 26 or 27ºC - even if i had it at 21ºC (roughly 70ºF) the last time i used it.

not a major deal, but strange.

It's a common issue with E46. The radio antenna is built into the rear glass. Over time, it shorts out, which causes the static when the defroster is turned on.

Unfortunately, the resolution is replacement of the rear window glass.

Another larger random question. Well two rather. I bought an automotive stethoscope to hunt down my vacuum leak. It is def coming from below the intake manifold.

How hard is it to remove the intake manifold?

Do i need to replace the intake manifold gasket if I pull it off?

I have my GFs car for the week, so I want to pull the intake manifold to get a closer look underneath and get the right vacuum parts.

K found a gasket set. Manifold comes off today. Already removed all my air induction system. F-connector broke this time around :/ Didn't last time When I swapped in new DISA valve and lower intake boot.

Unfortunately, thats not a part carried at your common autoparts store

I replaced my cooling system at about 106k and didn't replace the radiator, kind of wish I did though while everything was torn apart. I'm at about 111k now and still so far so good... If I were to go back I would of replaced the radiator for piece of mind.

I'm guessing radiators are good for 100k miles or more in the E46, but one of those things you might as well change while you're doing a cooling system overhaul. I'm just used to my father's radiator failing in his 540i like clockwork so I did mine at 50k due to age.

I replaced the cooling system minus the radiator about 15k miles ago... Didn't opt to change the radiator back then... now that the temperatures are starting to go up, im sure il drive close to 15000 miles before the end of the year, so was trying to understand what others are doing... I could replace it for peace of mind but I don't want to replace it too early if I don't need to...

You should. The upper neck on the radiator is made of plastic. I've pulled over to help someone on the side of the road who had a pinhole in that plastic. Don't be that guy. :)

I'm having a problem with the trim piece above the radio. There is a square hole in the center that two tabs on the trim piece are supposed to mesh with. I have never gotten it to seat right since I've owned the car. I've already replaced that trim with a new one. Is there something missing in that square hole?

Wandering. And a bit of bumpsteer I guess you could call it. The only way I can put it is that it just doesn't feel "connected" anymore. It feels like all the symptoms of bad FCABs, but I feel like my AKG's wouldn't be worn already.

Is it ok to use BMW (shell) 5w-30 during summer and use Mobil 1 0w-40 in the winter? I both are approved by BMW, but my question is more towards should I just stick with one type/brand of oil and not switch...

Wandering. And a bit of bumpsteer I guess you could call it. The only way I can put it is that it just doesn't feel "connected" anymore. It feels like all the symptoms of bad FCABs, but I feel like my AKG's wouldn't be worn already.

How are your tires? Sometimes when the tires get below 50% or more the car can start tramlining. In the 7 years I've had my car, the tramlining was always tires. The Dunlops I had on it tramlined from the first day I put them on.

I am presently still using M1 0w-40. I know it is too thin for use here in San Diego. I only use the ZHP now only once or twice a week.

Tires look good to sight. Tramlining is pulling towards a side of the road, correct? I don't believe thats it. Its more of left AND right movement, plus a little rougher on bumps now. It 'feels' bushing related as the steering just isn't as tight or sturdy anymore when cruising, under load it feels strong.

Tramlining is more the wobble back and forth when you cross the center-line. Pulling to the right could be alignment or the contour/crest in the road.

Tramlining is when the car tries to follow the contour of the road.
Easy way to tell if it's lower LCAB is drive 5mph while someone is looking at the wheels. Slam on the brakes. If the wheel moves towards the back of the car then they are bad

Yep, this happens to me too. My RE-11's and S-04's both did (do) this since they're pretty worn.

Call me nuts. But I open up the hood after every run on my vehicles to cool off the engine. And if I forget to close the hood overnight, well....so be it. They're inside the garage anyway. Just sayin'.

Of all the things I've read from enthusiasts, that's one of the weirder/more useless ones lol. I could maybe understand that on an old school turbo.

That's exactly the description I would use on the 2005. I started with the tie end rods and then just swapped out every thing. HUGE difference in steering feel.

Rob (socket head) warned me about the ones that come from Dr. Vanos. They strip them down and are prince to rust. I coated it with a clear lacquer to help prevent that. Maybe you can sand it and do the same?

Always wondered why mine did that. They also reverted the spring in my unit, and I chased starting issues for 2 years because of that. Found out by chance when I was replacing the entire unit with a used one w/ Beisan seals after stripping and drilling through the camshaft sensor screw.

Seems like their process as a whole needs some work.


Anyone check for play in them?

Replaced originals at 230k. One boot was dry and had a lot of play, other one looked like it had some life left. Replaced both "while in there" while I was doing struts and control arms.

No. Otherwise you'd have to bleed the system every time you manually checked the coolant level.

Smart upgrade, I plan to get one with one of their VANOS rebuild kits.

You should definitely replace the VANOS oil line. It was a leak item for me. The VANOS oil line and the VCG were both contributing to my 600-mile top-ups.

I highly recommend the i6Motorworks kit, as it comes with every possible seal, gasket, and replacement bolts that might be needed. When I used the Besian kit, one of the cap washers broke and I didn't have a replacement. I had to wait a few days for a replacement to arrive so I could put the car back together. You won't have this issue with the i6 kit, as everything needed is included. It doesn't include a new Vanos oil feed line, but it does have new crush washers for it. The seals are made of the same upgraded material as Besian provides. The i6 kit is only $65 shipped from Amazon and includes all of these parts, making it a much better deal than the others.

It seems that ever since I replaced my oil level sensor, it also doesn't seem to work right. I'm not entirely convinced no coding is necessary - I had a hard time finding information on whether it's required or not. Most said no, but then some said yes. Considering that the new one isn't quite working right, I'm hoping some coding is required...

Does anyone know definitively?

If I top up, it'll be fine for a while. But then eventually, after about 1000 miles or so, the light will start coming on when I shut off the car, and if I ignore it for a day or two, it will come on while driving, as though my oil level was actually low. The kicker is that when I check it, it's full on the dipstick.

I've had times when I've pre-emptively checked my oil level and it was full, and two days later the light comes on and it shows a quart low, which makes absolutely no sense, because I'd top it off and it'd be fine for another 1000 miles or so, at which point the light would come on and it would show completely full. I hope I didn't receive a defunct sensor.


No need to ask me if I check the oil on a level surface with the engine cold - of course I do. ;)

so, the dipstick is actually showing a quart low after 2 days? that would have nothing to do with the sensor. clearly that dipstick indicates the level of oil in the pan, so i'm hypothesizing that not all of the oil is getting back down to the pan. seems odd, for sure - if you had some sort of blockage, it should be present all the time.

amsoil makes a safe 'engine flush' that you add with your oil, run it, then drain. perhaps worth a shot, especially given your mileage. also, have you done an oil analysis at all?

yeah, that is very nice - same price as the beisan kit and comes with everything (bolts too!). the only question is - are the o-rings the same quality/material as the beisan ones?

hmmm. weird. you can code out the sensor entirely, but i'm guessing that's not what you want ultimately. :) perhaps you have a nearly-broken wire somewhere in the harness for that sensor?

That looks like a great kit. How do you know they have upgraded seals like Beisan?

This is exactly what my sensor does currently. My dip stick is right at the full marker but I'll still get the oil light. I'm hoping changing the sensor/oil will fix it but your issues seem to indicate that it won't. Let me know if you ever figure out if it needs to be coded. I may actually call my mechanic who was a BMW mechanic about some other stuff soon, I'll ask him and let you know what he says.

I have a square setup using APEX ARC-8 17x8.5" ET40 wheels and they work great. Those style 47 wheels should work fine on our ZHPs. The tire size is up to you. My wheels are wrapped in 245/40R17 tires and they're smaller than the stock tires by some amount but they work fine.

They have always done that... They media blast every unit they get. That's what it's from. Just hit those solenoid a with clear coat or silver before installing and you'll be fine
