Are they? You would think they would be the same since weight distribution is supposed to be 50/50 in both.

don't remember the values for a sedan but they are different... I was thinking the same but then maybe the weight distribution isn't quite 50/50??

Did they check the tread depth ?

Don't think they did but i got a tread gauge and in the middle of the tire they're 6 to 7 left and one of them is 4 to 5.

Would mounting the worn tires in the front be of any help or does it not matter? since it's rwd i'd figure get the best tires there.

I would put the better tires on the back so you can actually take off.

Went to townfair tire today to get the winters mounted and was told they couldn't put them on because 2 of the tires were too worn. Not sure if they were trying to sell me new tires or if they are really worn. What do you guys think? these are 2 pictures of the same tire that i saw to be the most worn.

Also, even if i gave them the baldest tires ever why would they decline to put them on? liability i may get into an accident and blame them?

I got the same crap from Merchants Tire when I dropped my van off on Monday for a rotation. I left it there and shipped two tires direct to them. They are installing them right now.

In a manual, it's like 50.7/49.3. Not enough to impact tire pressures imo

Not sure why most other peoples' say lower pressures. My sticker shows very high pressures...

There are the older ones. I believe in 05 they changed the stickers.

But your tire pressures are based on the load rating of the tire. The door jam is only specific to the load rating of the factory tire.

In reference to the winter tires posted earlier- tires are everything, especially in adverse conditions. Don't use those...they're done.

I was very surprised to see how high the recommended psi was in my door jam when I first went to check my pressures. I'm glad to know those pressures are for fully loaded, as I'll now be running something lower. I was thinking the higher pressure in the rear was because of how wide the tires are compared to the front. This is my first time running staggered low-pro's, so I'm genuinely curious of exactly why we're supposed to run more in the rear. Is it because those are the acceleration tires? I have a feeling the width is the difference.

It varies with size and construction of the tire sidewalls as well. Different tires of the same size can have different load and max pressure ratings.

It doesn't make sense why they would post only the max pressures on the door jamb. It would have made more sense to put the standard inflation numbers so people can quickly check what to set pressures to under normal circumstances.

My sticker does not say that 39/46 is max inflation pressure and is very misleading. I don't remember my owner's manual telling me that was max either, but I'll have to check when I go home.

Sure they did. An imported ZAM is the same thing as a ZHP. Import to the U.S. would entail a MPH cluster conversion, which is literally the only difference between the two.

Aren't the Canadian cars missing something the US cars have? Like the cams or something to do with not going to 6700rpm?

From the FAQ:

Question: And what about the BMW 330 vehicles in Canada that look like the ZHP in the United States?
Answer: Canada was different. In fact, BMW created the M Performance Package in Canada. It not only got the looks of its US counterpart, it also got the upgraded camshafts and engine tweaks. One thing that it didn't get, though, was the red needles on the instrument cluster. Moreover, the redline is at 6500 RPM, even though the car will rev to 6800 RPM -- just like its US ZHP counterpart. It also got the BMW Performance Package exhaust with the thinner walls (exactly like the one on the ZHP). Therefore, while it was not given the ZHP code name, it's simply a ZHP by another name. Indeed, it was given the option code of ZAM.

So yeah, it's lame, indeed, that max pressures are on the door jam. I saw it and was like "dang, that's a lot", but then was like, "must be what they recommend, and I trust BMW engineers" and proceeded to inflate the shit out of my tires. lol

Needless to say, I've let some air out. I'll stick with what the tires say, and if I'm lucky, I'll find my way to an AutoX with this car to really know what perfect is.

Second question. Does anyone know the difference between these two door clips apart from their apparent color:

1. 51418224781 - "Clip with seal ring" according to RealOEM (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/trim-panel-clip-priced-each/51418224781/)
2. 51418224768 - "Clip with washer, natur" according to RealOEM (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/trim-panel-clip-priced-each/51418224768/)

Maybe one is rubber washer, and another is foam? They're also listed in the diagram on RealOEM as the same thing (#6), but have different quantities:

Equipped with your input, I studied single button presses more carefully. I had been trying a single press and quick release, or a long press and hold, neither of which worked. It would only work when I'd just start pressing it sporadically. Turns out pressing for about a half second is the magic duration. I was releasing too quickly, or holding too long before.

Plug non foulers don't really work on our cars. Much too smart. Only way to run headers and be obd2 compliant is to run a wide band controller to trick computer into seeing the rear o2 sensors are intact and functional

If things start going south on your cooling system you'll probably see the temp gauge go up. That said, you'll want to shut your car down immediately if it starts to climb. I'd wager you might also see a bunch of steam if there's catastrophic failure (burst hose or something), but not much visual evidence if there's a steady leak.

Yup, exactly. I think the stock range for dead center is 75ºC-115ºC. That's a huge range (40ºC) for the car's temperature gauge to be reading "normal."

O2 sensors are 100k items. Post cat O2 sensors don't really need to be replaced as they do nothing to the operation of the emissions system. I'd replace those IF they throw a code. The pre-cat sensors are the important ones.

Not really. If they're not throwing CEL codes then they're probably still good, though you're most likely not getting as good gas mileage as you would with new ones. Those sensors help with mixture preparation, so replacing them could still give you fuel economy benefits even if they're not throwing codes.

I'm still getting the same MPG as when I bought the car 2+ years ago. It's not on DD duty any more, so it's not too big of a deal.

In your case, I'd wait to replace them if it's not a daily anymore. OE ones are expensive, though the OEM Bosch ones are pretty much the same with a significantly lower price tag.

Really? The pressure gauge in my father's NA Miata definitely registers pressure change as the motor oil heats up and thins out, and you can tell when it is half a quart high/low from the gauge as well.

1. Did the lower grill/grid in the lower middle of the front bumper come in two different colors on ZHPs from the factory? I've seen pics of them in both black and silver/grey.

2. Similar question on the main front kidney grills, was there more than one color option and/or chrome on it from the factory on the ZHP? I realize the gloss black performance grill was an accessory option, but I'm talking from the factory.

Looking at the nose of my soon-arriving ZHP the lower grill is grey like I've seen several others on here, and the main grill is chrome surround with chrome edged slats.....

There's a gas station in town that sells 90 octane non-ethanol for a reasonable price. No one has 91.

Normally, I've been running shell V-power 91 (just daily driving, no racing or Auto-x). Do you guys think it's harmful to drop down in octane rating just have have non-alcohol fuel? If there aren't any harmful differences, I may give it a shot.

That's the reason I didn't do it. That, and I was lazy. Just tape it off with some painter's tape, put some newspaper behind the lower grille through the top, and spray the grille with a couple of coats. Really very simple.

As a rank newbie I'm glad I've found this thread. Hope I don't abuse it: please call me on it if I do. My question at this point- what's the best method to pry off the dashboard trim necessary to access the radio? I have an aux input adapter I'd like to install. When I bought the car earlier this week the seller took me to his M3 and pulled the trim and radio out to show me how it's done, but when I try, I can only get the trim loose- not remove it. Seems to require so much force that I risk scratching the trim (and did so, a bit, but a Sharpie put me right).

Sockethead
02-18-2016, 06:16 AM
best method is to get the plastic pry tools made for the job but you can wrap a putty knife in several layers of tape and use that. Be careful when taking the trim above the radio off. the end closest to the steering wheel has a habit of breaking off. I'd try to pry from that end first. The other piece on the passenger side needs to come off first if I remember right.

As others have said, get a set of trim removal tools. Remove the passenger dash trim piece first by lifting up under each pin's location evenly. Don't just yank out one side all the way first. Take your time. Patience will help keep you from snapping something. I would look at pictures of each trim piece so you know where the pins on each trim piece are:

Passenger trim piece: https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0L/Interior/Trim/Dashboard/ES117248/
Center trim piece: https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0L/Interior/Trim/Dashboard/ES117836/

Hope that helps!

So last night I got a coolant light but disappeared after 10 minutes. Parked the car up and could see some wetness on the under tray but nothing dripping. Checked the car this morning and the coolant level was fine. Maybe 1/4 in from full when cold. Let the car get up to temp and let the thermostat come on and still no coolant light or any leaks. Not sure what it could be. Might be possible expansion tank but it didn't have any visible leaks without me taking my intake off etc. I guess next step is to get a pressure tester and check then. Any ideas guys?

It'll vary based on the options the cars came with. Should be the same as any 02+ 330i either way

Depends on the equipment. There were something like 4 different springs offered in the rear. Looks like low optioned coupes had one extra spring that wasn't offered on the sedans.

Do you want a bigger cupholder? If so, I think the Ultimate Cupholder is an option: http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/

A lot of people get rid of their cupholders in favor of a Eurotray, such as this (part no. 51167038323 for black): https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Jack/ES83030/

Otherwise I don't really know what other options there are.

Not really, what do you need? I also use the Ultimate, and it's barely ok. I also have a couple of others that suffice, but nothing really sturdy/100% reliable vs. the original ones.

I have a cheap fix, it works great for me. My son's sippy cup is too wide for the car's cup holder. I got a plastic cup from Taco Bell (large size) and always carry it in the car. Sippy cup goes into Taco Bell cup, which goes into cup holder. Hope it helps.

It is attached via clips which are really fragile. It is actually not a really great design.

You can pull the trim off and apply double sided tape or pull the complete trim and replace all the clips.

Interesting stuffs. I'm thinking just going Euro tray is my best bet. I'd probably fab something to go into it as a cupholder. I used to do car stereos back in the day...like way back when you had to make your own dash kits....so I've got some skill with molding plastic and making things go into others and still look nice. Time may tell if I've still got it. Question: Can you wedge just about any cup size into the euro tray and slide it shut and that does alright? Like is it a lot better than my current small cupholder situation, and also better than the Ultimate Cupholder?

Why not just keep your cupholder insert in the glovebox and swap it out with the euro tray when you need it? It takes all of 5 seconds. :)

Comparing the cupholder in my car to the eurotray in my father's car, there really isn't a whole lot of difference in width/diameter that either one can hold. The cupholder does "taper" in a way since it has a two-tiered opening, but even so, both are limited by the width of the center console.

Hmm, maybe I'm being dense here.

This is the euro tray that was linked, so I'm assuming it's the one everyone's talking about:
https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/713461_x800.jpg

And this is how someone modified the stock cupholder to work with the euro console:
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=376648&d=1285158726

If I understand what you're saying correctly, you're talking about quickly interchanging the stock cupholder for the euro tray. Do you mean quickly exchanging the whole console? Plz halp me understand this.

The center console is broken up into two pieces for US cars. The front section has two cupholders, like so:

https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/11267_x800.jpg

The rear section has an open storage "tray" with a coinholder:

https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/30009_x800.jpg

As far as I know, there are two European or "euro trays." There is a third, but that's for cars with built in phones or something, so I won't touch on it.

1. There is the "short" that is the same size as the cupholders and can swap out directly with it. Part no. 51167043093 (black), 51167043094 (gray), and 51167043095 (beige)

https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/190005_x800.jpg

2. There is the "long" tray which replaces both the cupholders and the coin tray as a single piece. This is considered the "true" euro tray. Part no. 51167038323 (black), 51167038324 (gray), and 51167038325 (beige)

https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/713458_x800.jpg

3. There is also a third option that is just two open bins. Personally I prefer the sliding cover of the euro trays, but some may prefer the open nature of this bin:

Great post man. Thx for breaking it down for me. Interchanging the short euro tray with the USDM cupholders seems pretty simple, but not simple enough to just throw in when I happen to know I'll be using a large cup, especially since it may not help much anyway. I like the idea of using a Taco Bell type large cup, but it just seems so jenky. I was really sad that the Ultimate doesn't sound like it works very well. Can anyone elaborate on the problems it has? I'm wondering if some modification can overcome them? If so, I'd get the long, covered euro tray and just use a pair of Ultimates as cup holders on each side of the console.

UWISHU1

...just so you guys know where I'm coming from- I use my cupholder(s) every day since I'm drinking something on the way to work, and often a drink from lunch (varying sizes), and regularly use a variety of protein shake shakers. Sometimes I'm juggling two at a time, plus a water bottle. So yeah, you could say the cupholder situation is important to me. With that said, I also need more space than in the armrest for things like chargers, etc. that I don't want to put in the door card.

What's not simple about it? It takes very little effort to do. I just want to make sure you know that they literally just lift up and out when you grab them by the little notches towards the front on both sides.

I like the idea of using a Taco Bell type large cup, but it just seems so jenky.

I've never had an issue fitting the largest of fast food chain cups in my cupholders, and they are pretty stable if left untouched. Unless Taco Bell offers some kind of gallon size I don't know about, I don't foresee this being an issue for the stock cupholders.

The shaker - these cars weren't designed with cupholders in mind, and shakers are too big for the standard cupholders. What I do with non-standard size bottles is extend the passenger seat thigh rest all the way and let the bottle sit on its side in the ridge between the bolster and the seat cushion.

I suppose it just comes down to preference. I don't want to have to retrieve and install a different console piece as often as I'd need to, regardless of how simple the swap is. I intend to find a solution that always works for both storage and cup holders, one way or another. That's the beauty of the aftermarket- there's always a way to get what you want. I know cup holders are far from what BMW engineers are focused on, and that's probably a good thing. All the shakers and larger cups I use fit in my Subaru, my Hondas, and the wife's RDX, so I'm gonna say BMW screwed up a little by making them too small. Another problem I have is that I use a gatorade water bottle from time to time for sports like indoor soccer, and that doesn't fit either. I think this is why The Ultimate Cupholder exists.

I'm genuinely curious as to what about the ultimate cupholder doesn't work well so I can see if I can overcome it. I've got resources up to and including talented engineer friends who have made me some pretty clever designs over the years, so it's also possible I call on them to come up with a better solution.

Thx for the idea on extending the thigh rest...I'll definitely be using that for some things. I think that ultimately a euro console (for storage) and a couple modified/optimized ultimate cupholders could be the solution I need.

Europeans think cup holders are silly, that's why they suck in BMWs.

Let me know your thoughts. Lot more info in my build thread in the project paage for background info.

Just replaced DISA valve, cleaned ICV, new lower intake boot, new air filter. Car still idle hunts but doesnt stall. vacuum leak can be heard at idle when looking over the motor.

Let me know guys, thanks a bunch.

Wouldn't drive too long like that.

Here ya go! It cut out (possibly due to bad connection) in the middle of it, which is why I tried to get it to hang up! As you can see though, it doesn't matter if I turn off the car or open the door she won't stop talking! Lol

Lol. What's "enhanced road-side assistance" and what if you can call 911! Seems like they are missing an opportunity to to help people in a pinch (accident) and make a sale... "We are happy to assist you just read off your credit card and expiration date and we'll be happy to send you whatever assistance you need..." ;-)

So going off of this discussion...it says in the FAQ that if your car was ordered with BMW assist you have Bluetooth. Since I have this mirror, I assume that mine was ordered with BMW assist. Does anyone know where the bluetooth module is located on a sedan?

For comparison, here is my vin decoded compared to the old mans. Mine has BMW Assist, his doesnt. Code 639 makes me think I have bluetooth vs his code 640...

I think it's located in the boot, on the driver side behind the trim...

Yea I looked back there and I saw a silver box on top of the bracket where the CD Changer would be. Is that the Bluetooth receiver? I'll take a pic of it after work. The reason why I wasnt sure was that it didnt look like the one in this video.

I know which module you are referring to and I don't think that is the Bluetooth module, but I could be wrong... The reason being it looks quite big to be a Bluetooth module and the Bluetooth module should have a sticker which shows the pairing code etc... I'm assuming yours doesn't have the sticker with the pairing code etc cause mine doesn't too...

This is what mine looks like I believe.

This end is facing the rear of the car.

Interested in the Bluetooth discussion. My car has nav, but no Assist so no Bluetooth, and not interested in spending $678 on it. Might have to be an eBay pickup at some point.

OK, so two random ZHP questions....

1) What's the consensus on the guibo/flex disc? My car only has 44,000 miles on it, but it's also going on 12 years old. I know rubber gets pretty hard over time. The reason I ask is the car will be on stands on a week or so getting wheels refurbed and I'll be under the car doing FCABs, and I was think of a couple of other easy things to do while I was under there. I don't want to just throw money at stuff unnecessarily, though. Has anybody changed it and noticed a significant difference in NVH?

2) When I get out of my car, there's quite a creaky sound coming from the left-rear suspension. I know it's the suspension unloading, but the creaky sound sounds like a pie tin or sheet metal. Any thoughts on mitigation? I should probably do a rear suspension refresh at some point, but it's down the list a little.

Thanks!

I think you have bluetooth as well. Look in your owners manual for a card like this:

24699

It should also have a manual like this:

24700

The bluetooth receiver is on the driver side of the boot, behind the lining. Should look like this:

24701

The next question is how to reset it. Every time I try to go through the pairing procedure it starts dialing using the original owners phone number, which is out of service. It takes me to a Verizon error message that repeats but it doesn't let me rest it or pair.

I thought that isn't the Bluetooth module and there should be another module next to or on top of it, which should be the Bluetooth module, no?

Negative, that is the bluetooth module. theres two different types. This one is the TCU and is the standard bluetooth module for vehicles with BMW assist.

The ULF is the standard module for vehicles with nav:

Just realized that the vin on that bluetooth passkey card is not my vin. I used vin decoder and found out it came from a non zhp 330i that was made in 2004 as well. However, it has the same tech and connectivity packages as mine. I suspect that the previous owner bought this manual online and it came with that.

I don't think I have BMW assist based in the vin decoder but I do have the same module as you in the same location... Now I'm confused... Here's a pic of my option list-

24703

Im guessing that the PO installed it...

Very interesting...I'm confused as well. What happens when you press the sneezing man button on your steering wheel? Also, could you take a picture of your module to compare to mine? I'm curious if it has the same cables hooked up.

When I press it first it yells out "sorry" and when I press it again it yells "system off"
