View Full Version : Dirty Winter Car Thread

Reflecting as to how we were successful with the Bumpered Bug Pics thread here: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?2147-Bumpered-Bug-Pics&highlight=bugs, I thought that we could use something similar, dedicated to our dirty winter car photos. Let's see some winter wonders! :biggrin
Here is a shot of my 318ti this morning at the post office after a 1,500 mile road trip. My hood and roof resemble a monotone Jeff Koons M3 in road-film gray. Too cold out for a bath just yet. :crying

This photo is after the massive icebergs have at least melted off from behind the wheels, but it shows why I'm REALLY glad I elected to pick up the Outback for a winter driver, and leave my ZHP warm, dry and clean in the garage. The Subie has been taking one for the team through a bunch of crappy weather, and with its Altimax Arctic snows and freaky good ground clearance, she's a beast in the snow.

No transition here, just salt and crud and ice and snow and cold... Truck passed me and splashed, it was painful to see.
I had washed it the day before to get rid of the first salt dump on the streets.
I should have taken a pic that day.

I was at Boston market getting food, didn't get stuck (although I almost did on a hill at a red light...didn't time the light properly)
Roads were trash, easily 3+ of powder on heavy traveled roads.
The Michelin Ice-Xi3 tires are 10000% better than the LM-25s. The car actually does really well. And add the fact that LSD should be bought this year...hopefully...it will only improve

I assume you've already checked to see if it just happens to be frozen? Some people add straight water to their washer tanks, which dilutes the washer fluid andhinders it's ability to resist freezing.

Might be getting a rinse in the morning tomorrow, though it will be raining on Tuesday. After that the temperatures go down a bit.

Replicas or genuine?
I've thought about 17s a few times, but I wouldn't really gain anything from that and I'm not even sure if they would look better.

Probably Genuine, just because.
Are those not 17's? Or is the profile of the tire larger?
Honestly after getting my Apex Arc-8's, I will choose 17's all day every day. Tires are a lot cheaper for one, and the cushiness puts my mind at ease when driving through the city. There have been a few times I've hit an unavoidable bump (nothing sizeable but enough to really feel it) and I'll shout out "SEVENTEENS BABY"

They're 16" replicas. I got them with the car.

There is a bit of a comfort when I switch to the winter tires from the 135s. I've had a bubble on the old summer tires, which I wasn't sure if they came from a pothole or sidewall scrape. 18s seem to do alright otherwise, and I hope I don't have anymore issues like that.

I've been looking chief. They look really nice for off-road wheels. I grew pretty fond of them. There's a "mini" factor to it.

They're working on the water here too. No water :|
They just finished up and used that new PEX pipe that expands if it freezes. There going to be some trickling faucets on the cold nights now. That meter is at ground level and the pipe is many 18” under ground!

Professionally detailed 12/5/17. Daily-driven since. Pic taken 1/10/18, 36 days later. Has had ZERO cleaning of any kind since. Not even windshield.
Lessons learned? 1) white cars don't show dirt very easily, 2) Arizona "winters" are awesome

I've always had 2 cars for the last 20 years, and it's kept me from getting bored with either, much better than owning one car did in the past. You could try that argument - "we'll be saving money because I'll be keeping my cars longer". She probably won't buy it, but it's worth a shot! I've mostly had one "practical" and one "fun" car when I've paired up.
