View Full Version : Imola Red Sedan Project/Maintenance Thread

What took so long, Vas? Camping pictures looks great. I haven't gone camping in a while... not since Skala in 2010 or 2011. Gotta go next summer!
I remember skala camping trips. Those were great and a beautiful place.
As far a thread, I usually mods cars as a fairly decent pace so there are constant updates. With buying a house money is tight and is more focused on upkeep of the car.

Thanks guys for the positive feedback.
Maybe next year I will have some more funds for actual mods. Probably the first big change will be coilovers.

That pic above confirms that I need to ditch the factory tail-lights. Just not sure if to get RCR or something else..
Also decided to drain and refill the transmission this evening. I had no idea what fluid was in there before but it for sure did not smell like gear oil. So Redline 75W140NS Gear Oil and Redline Synthetic D4 ATF went in. 1 Quart of Each for a total of 2 quarts was used.
Process was simple and easy but that gear oil was some pretty thick stuff. But using it with atf thins it out in cold climate. Will update over the next week to see how the shifts are and if it improved over the previous fluid.
Saw this video posted here on the forum.
Of course I would not go down a size to 17" wheels however the video makes me want coilovers and wheels soo bad.
Enjoy

Little update
Went to the junkyard this morning to get some clips that were broken on my brake ducts. While there found a complete set of RCR tails with stealth bulbs in them. Picked up a complete set for $100 and then after research, they are the same ones Turner Motorsports sells. Going to sand them and clear coat them.
Then installed my new wheel liner and brake duct plus washed the car.
As far as the trans, shifting has improved with this new fluid. Should have done it sooner.

Nice. Was that a "pick your part" or just a regular junk yard? I don't see BMWs in those very often which is why I asked.

Seriously. If they were out here like that, i would've taken the euro clears. :X
This was a regular junk-yard however on saturdays they let you in past the door so it becomes a pick/pull basically. I removed these lights from a 330xi that was hit petty bad in the front and rear.
i'll post pics of them after they are clear-coated.
A little teaser of the lights. Can't wait to install them

Tails look great!
Next on the list is to replace the matte black kidney grills. I don't know who they are made by but they are pretty cheap as far as quality. Clips on them are broken and they do not fit properly in the grill opening of the hood.
So a member of the mafia donated a BMW performance grill to me. Now I just have to buy the other side and then install them.

Yeah finally will be able to replace the broken matte units that are on the car.
Also placed an order from ECS for the Ziza Interior LED Kit.
Installed the Ziza Interior LED kit this evening. LED bulbs make such a nice difference compared to regular ones.
As far as install, it is straight forward. Hardest part was probably the c-pillar lights.

No pics? Or is it hard to grab a picture that represents them realistically?
I can try to take a picture at night.
Decided to do an oil change today and upon inspection, the oil pan was covered in fresh oil. Looked around and it seems like it is coming somewhere from up top. Only thing that comes to mind is the oil filter housing gasket. Valve cover is dry btw.

No issues with the 'switched' (activated by the push button)? The Zizas would not turn on in my sedan.
Not following you a 100%. Mind explaining?
All the led bulbs turn on and off and the dome light plus c-pillars still fade in and out when the car is unlocked/locked for me.
Also looked through my paperwork from the previous owners and no sign of the ofgh being replaced. Car has 108k on it so i ordered a new gasket, Vanos line and washers.
Last year during the winter I was doing Vanos, plugs and valve cover gasket.

I tried replacing my c-pillar lights today and the ones that activate with the buttons will not turn on with the ziza bulbs installed. They work fine with the OEM bulbs and the ziza bulbs work fine in the other socket. I can't figure it out.
Dumb question but are you sure the polarity is correct when you put the led bulb with the socket back into the light?
After talking to Dario and looking through my service records that I have from the previous owner, it looks like the idler and the belt tension pulley were never replaced. Since I am going to be in there replacing the ofhg, might as well as replace these parts as well.
But according to records, the water pump pulley and belts were replaced with oem parts about 30k ago. And I was thinking about the hydraulic tensioner but decided not to get it. If it is bad upon inspection, then I will replace it. So skipped those items.
On order are the two pulleys, bolts and caps.

Ha, I hope you don't end up finding out your tensioner is bad at 8:00pm like me! Thank goodness I had a parts car, or else my car would still be gutted.

Fingers crossed that it is not the case. But after doing some research on the interwebs, it doesn't seem like alot of people have issues with them.

Saw this and was thinking about it. Won't get to it next year if I do.
Think it's worth $100? What's the biggest benefit? just more light?

ECStuning actually has a sale on them sometimes so it was roughly $65 for the complete interior kit. Plus they offered free shipping on them.
Biggest benefit is that they provide a higher light output. Plus the light output is white and crisp instead of the dull yellow from regular bulbs.

Not a bad deal on sale. I like the look inside at night with them. Remember the bulbs only work if installed in the correct direction (polarity). Hope they last a good long while.

Lol at Dima. Probably was :ineedabeer
So next items as far as maintenance goes includes the following
Oil filter housing gasket
Vanos line
Idler pulley
Tensioner pulley
Still trying to decide if I need to replace the actual hydraulic Tensioner. Any suggestions?
I am not touching the water pump pulley or the main belt since that was replaced when the cooling system was done with OEM parts.
Am I missing anything else? Going to use my buddies shop to get this done in about a week since its cold outside and I have no garage.
Decided not to risk it and bought an OEM hydraulic tensioner.

Spent saturday morning working on the zhp is my buddies shop. Had a huge propane heater going since its cold outside.
The replacement of the ofhg, tensioner assembly, and vanos line was simple and straightforward.. The old tensioner was on the weak side and both the idler and tensioner pulley had dry bearings inside of them. Replaced the old hardware as well and installed new caps where they were missing.

That reminds me. I need a steering coupler too. I'll await your impressions with the AKG model :)
My previous cars that I owned (nissan maxima and infiniti g20) I had replaced the factory rubber pieces with aluminium units that I had machined.
The results were impressive that I bought one for the zhp when I found out that they were available. However it has been in my toolbox for a couple of months mostly because I didn't have time to install it in the bmw. I need to just install it because I know I will like it.
This is going in shortly weather permitting.

I was considering getting a carbon fiber diffuser but the only one I would want would be the OEM BMW performance. Those are super rare and hard to find.
Just did not want to spend money on a knock-off that is just a fiberglass unit with a layer of carbon fiber on it. Nobody has a good review about fitment either.
But I still want new foglights, euro clear corners and license plate delete filler panel.

Install is not bad at all. Only gripe I have though is the final position of the airbag. It is not perfectly centered and I assume this is because of the spring bracket that sits inside the wheel.
I ended up using my chipped lower trim so I will center the airbag when I replace the it. Otherwise I am satisfied of the fit and finish.

This piece in this ebay ad. It rotates therefore you can align the steering wheel/airbag TDC (top dead center). In the future, the best way to not have to deal with that is to mark/remember exactly where things were when you take it out and just put it back in the same alignment.

Yes, post a pic. You don't have to touch it but if it rotates some (when putting things back on, for example), you could be out of alignment.
Maybe it is just in my head looking at it now. But I think the gap on the right side of the airbag is bigger then the left. 12178

I've been doing the same. My concern with the m3 diff is that the gearing is too high (numerically) so long highway trips would not be so good.
I think the Wavetrac LSD looks like a pretty good deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wavetrac-Differential-BMW-E46-325i-328i-330i-M-T-98-05-/190523486517?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c5c15b135&vxp=mtr
As far as I know, its fairly popular with the e9x guys and has a lifetime warranty. And it can spin both wheels even if one has no resistance, which is a big plus
That is my concern as well.
What needs to happen to use a 3.46 diff and put an lsd into it like an os giken?

Not sure this question makes sense. Are you asking if you can make a non-LSD into an LSD? Not sure that's very practical.
I assume you could just custom order that ratio from the manufacturer of OS Giken.

If it's any concern, my mpg on the freeway is 28mpg vs the old 30mpg.
I am usually at 80mpg running 3300rpm or so in 6th. It's totally worth it for the peppiness of the 3.62. :D

The OS Giken diff has to be inserted into a differential case. You will still need a non-LSD differential to install the LSD unit.

That part I understand. And the OS Giken only works with (not for 3.07, 2.93 or any ratios lower than 3.15).
So a 3.38 or 3.46, or higher diff would need to be found. I think a Z4 3.46 would be the easiest to find?
Here is a gear ratio chart that I have found that seems to be helpful

I try not to brake alot and keep at a steady speed and not accelerate hard. If I do accelerate and play around alot, I get an average of 24-26mpg. What was your old MPG before the 3.38 swap?
That is a good point actually. I need to do some digging and see what the price is on a used 3.46 diff from a z4.
http://www.bokchoys.com/differential/GearRatios.htm
There is a fair share of E46s with the 3.46 ratio. :)
An brand new aftermarket diff would cost similar as a M3 rear end swap with M3 brakes. Personally, since I was planning to do an S54 swap EVENTUALLY, it make more sense to me to go M3 rear end. :)
3.64 18% acceleration increase vs 3.46 12% acceleration increase.

Thanks guys.
This saturday I am dropping off the car finally to get some needed body work done and fresh paint. Super excited about it.

So clean.
Car dropped off for paint and body work. ETA is about a week for the complete front end and rear bumper. Will also have pdr done to remove the only ding that I have on the car.
BTW those expanding plastic rivets on the front bumper are a PITA. The ones that under the front grill are even worse to remove.
But I did try out the Sonax Alcantara cleaner on the shift boots. Highly impressed with it.
Currently what the car looks like after the body work has been done with primer sprayed. Car will be sanded next and then the painting will begin.

I will try to get more pictures when I stop by the body shop to drop off the new rear diffuser and some hardware.

And the zhp is back together. 2-3 weeks and it will get a full detail once the clearcoat hardens.
It sleeps one last night at the body shop tonight and I pick it up tomorrow.

How's the color match?
Everything looks good, dude.
In the paint booth it looked spot on. Panels were blended and a color matching gun was used.
The paint looks great and the ppg clear laid down nice and flat. I will post more pictures of it in direct sunlight but quality products make all the difference.
Downside of imola paint is that it's super expensive. Iirc it was $16 per an ounce of paint.

LOL @ 'meow' above. :)
looks awesome. $16/oz, huh? yikes. need to have the leading edge of the hood and front fenders resprayed on mine, and the A pillars and roof. going to be expensive.

Awesome.
Thinking about ordering a tow hook plate holder and euro clears. Just hard to justify it since the wife's car needs a set of tires.

I think I might do that. Just don't want to get a ticket for not having a front plate since the fine and a plate holder are almost the same price.
As far as tires, I am having a hard time making a choice on what kind.

After among other things reading the 'favorite DD tire' thread here I just picked up a set of the Conti DWS tires last week. Really happy so far. Still breaking them in, but I don't really think I've lost much on dry pavement over my Hankooks. Driving around in the snowy wet slop this morning on the other hand? Far more confident than I've ever been in this car. Like a whole different animal. Count me impressed!
Garry, Its another zhp sedan. It currently has Conti DWS all around. The rear are on the wear indicators and the front will be there by the end of this year. So at this point I might as well buy a new complete set of tires for the car.
As much as I would enjoy putting a pure set of summer tires on the car, I think all-seasons are a better choice since its for the wife. Maybe I should just go through the "favorite DD tire" thread here and see what people suggest. Just not sure if to go with another set of DWS or some Kumho or Michelin or etc.
Btw how much is a full set of Conti's?

Conti DWS in Stock sizes was like 680 on tirerack if I recall.
