Fuel filter is really easy, I recommend getting new hose as well, I ended up having to cut my old hose off to get the sucker off. I'm glad I bought the installation kit. I believe I bought mine from bav auto
Good call on the installation kit. Bav Auto has it for $16.95 which is not bad at all. Might as well get the fuel filter from there as well. MANN fuel filter is $51.95

+1 for the new fuel line hoses. I wish I had done mine when I replaced my fuel filter, but I managed to salvage the original hoses without issue. I'll definitely change them next time around.
Thanks for the advice guys. Now time to do some price shopping and see where I can get the best deals.
Was a warm day today so I washed the car and did an interior detail on it. Came out pretty nice after not being touched during the winter. The sealant I used in the fall held up pretty well.
Once it's spring, I will do a full exterior detail on it.
Random picture of the rubber mats. Applied Adam's VRT to them.

Washed the car yesterday.
Doing an oil change this weekend. Nothing new to report. Still reliable as a daily.

Yeah it's nice that I'm not having any problems or issues with it Knock on wood.
Gives me more time to concentrate on the wife's zhp.
Oil change complete at 138,343. Used mobil 1 0w-40 with Mann Filter.
Placed an order from fcp euro for the upper and lower intake boots, Throttle body gasket and IACV Grommet. All genuine bmw OE parts.
Still need to order a g.a.s rebuild kit.
Put on 259 miles today and got over 139k.
Intake parts have shipped as well.
Hopefully this weekend.

I also see the ICV grommet...looks like you are going to be replacing that. Would be curious to hear how hard it was for you to pull out your ICV to replace this.
BTW, I found my old OEM DISA in storage and the vacuum pot seems to be in proper working condition. Ordered the G.A.S. kit to do the rebuild.
^ and a throttle body gasket I think
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Correct. Throttle body and icv grommet. Going to clean both items as well.
Inspecting the disa and then will order the rebuild kit based on results.
Will report back about the icv removal.
Started this evening to remove parts.
Got the intake box removed, upper boot and disa. Will remove the lower boot tomorrow, the iacv and Throttle body.
The f-connector broke apart but I got a spare one.
Disa valve is dirty but not broken. Still will rebuild it with the g.a.s kit.
Now time to go eat some sushi.
Halfway there. Everything removed.
Clean it up and put it back together.

Thanks. ☺
I also belive the car had a small vacuum leak since now the idle is better.
Little update. Maybe you guys can assist.
So today was the first time I actually got hard on the gas after replacing the boots, throttle body gasket and IACV grommet and cleaning them.
Issue is with the car not wanting to idle if I am hard on the gas and then shift into neutral and let the revs drop. The revs drop past the idle speed and the car stalls. I tried it in multiple gears with the same result.
However the car idles in neutral and if I rev it up in neutral it drops and idles.
Also the idle speed is the not low or high in neutral.
Any thoughts?
I ordered a g.a.s disa rebuild kit as well.

It still sounds like a vacuum leak to me. I would double check everything you replaced and make sure the items were installed correctly. This wasn't an issue before you replace these items, correct? (Sorry this is a hit and run post, didn't dig for previous info)

Correct. This was not issue was not present before. Could it be from cleaning the iacv or moving the throttle body plate by hand ?
Guess I should take it all apart and make sure I didn't miss anything. And this time rebuild the disa.

Moving the throttle plate is not an issue, and is unlikely to cause your issue. Its lowest state is low enough to allow enough air in to let the engine idle, so even if it was stuck, the minimum revs you'd get is idle. That's not it...
Cleaning the ICV - the only issue I can foresee with that (as long as the flap moves freely) is forgetting to plug it back in. Make sure the connection is snug on that bad boy.

This. After my failed attempt at yanking the ICV out, putting the electrical connector back into the ICV took some extra work. Make sure it 'clicked' back into place.
Yeah mine did not want to budge either. I had to twist and pull on it to be able to remove
Thanks for the suggestions. I will dig into it
So the G.A.S disa rebuild kit has shipped. Should I also go ahead and order a fuel filter? Got a feeling it still might be the original unit with almost 140k on it since I do not have any records of it being replaced.

I say yes to new fuel filter, due to lack of records.
Ordered a fuel filter and fuel filter install kit from BavAuto.
So last night I unplugged the battery. Plugged it back in this morning and been driving the car all day pretty much.
Not sure what happened but now the issue is not existent.
Still going to take it back apart when I rebuild the disa to make sure there is nothing wrong. And then install a new fuel filter.
Going to do the fuel filter today.
Got it from BAV auto and the install kit which includes new hoses and clamps.

Lmao this cracked me up. I applaud you Daniel.
So this evening I replaced the fuel filter.
It has been done before since the time stamp was 1/10/10 on it.
Pic of the old and new filter.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160520/c535cc18d9b8b09271414b5fd8064c14.jpg
However the first thing I noticed was that the vacuum hose that is to be connected to the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel filter was not connected. The rubber became brittle and broke apart. So the fuel pressure regulator was not raising the fuel pressure and creating a vacuum leak since the hard line goes up to the f-connector.
Secondly when I turned the old filter upside down, the stuff that came out of it was plain nasty and brown.
The install kit that I got made the install simple since I just cut off the old hoses and replaced with new. And new clamps instead of those weird factory ones.
The only weird thing that happened was when I took the car for a spin around the neighborhood. The check engine light came on and the car went into limp mode. I pulled over, turned it off and then back on. That seemed to clear the light and the issue was gone. Not sure what the deal with that was.
Also I bought the car back in 2012 with 90k. The filter was a 2010 date stamp and I am now at almost 140k. So this filter based on that probably had 60-75k on it. Way past due
Going to drive the car tomorrow and put a fresh tank of fuel into it. Then rebuild the disa over the weekend.

definitely... the ZHP has a lot more going for it in the comfort department. the E36 M3 is a lot more raw feeling and sounding, but i personally can't stand the non-adjustable steering column. that's a deal killer for me. and the steering rack is a lot slower.
you can always lightly mod the ZHP to be rawer... that's what i did. :)

I think this is the most logical option vs selling it and trying to find an e36 m3 with the specs I want.
Making the zhp feel more alive is probably the way I am going to go. LSD, coilovers, exhaust, etc.
Also I got a full tank of gas this morning before heading into work. Car seems to be running much better with the new fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator actually working now.

I would keep the ZHP. It's a way better car overall, IMO. That, and it can be modded to feel however you'd like it to feel. There is no improving the E36's interior quality or the overall cheaper feeling you get when driving it (compared to the E46).

Well I compare my mostly stock car to my wife's zhp which is pretty much fully sorted out. Such a difference what a new suspension and drive-train components do to make a car feel more alive.
Makes my car feels sloppy and boaty since it is still on the original suspension and rubber bushings. Her car on the other hand is more sharp, responsive and firmer. That is why I drive it on the weekends and it is a way to make sure there is nothing wrong with it when she drives it during the week.

i've used both my koch tools bushing tool, or a sawzall (cut carefully through the rubber, and then the outer casing of the bushing, then hammer it out). i prefer the koch unit but one set was seized in there and had to be cut out!

Not that I have noticed on the wife's zhp. I did however have the car aligned after I did the Z4M FCAB/RTAB.
Keep in mind that the Z4M FCAB will increase the front caster more then the factory bushings but On-center feel is significantly improved as a result. They are also full rubber ( not fluid filled ) and do not squeak like poly units which I currently have installed on the car.

Should not. It adds caster moving the tire a bit forward in the wheel well. Camber and toe can still be within spec.

Had the Pilot Sport AS3 in 235/45/17 on my E39 and they were ok. I don't have any experience with the AS3+ but I don't know how different they are truly. The car handled great and felt solid in the rain, but they are loud on certain surfaces. If you get on rutted pavement or a coarse road material, they scream at you. Up here in Seattle, a lot of roads are like that so they weren't my favorite tire. It's odd because on smooth roads, they were dead quiet. But, obviously there are pros and cons to every setup. They were good overall though and I would have no issues recommending them. Tread life is good as well. Sidewall is a nice balance of comfort and handling in my opinion. Felt very solid in the cold weather as well. No slipping at all.
Thanks for the opinion everyone.
I might hold off till spring and try the replacement for the Pilot Super Sport.

If the cost stays roughly the same, I will try out a set to see what the hype is about.
Only gripe I have with the Bridgestone S04 is the tramlining.
1 bottle of Redline Si-1 complete fuel system cleaner added at 143,650 to fuel tank.
Got some detailing products as gifts for Christmas. So today spent the day cleaning the interior since it has been a bit neglected.
Used Adam's interior detail spray on the dash, door panels and other hard surfaces. Loving the candy cane scent from it
Adam's All purpose cleaner used on the rubber mats and Adam's carpet and upholstery cleaner on the fabric surfaces.
Also drove the car after having it sit for almost 2 weeks.

Noticed this morning that the engine on a cold start is noticeably quieter. Could be attributed to the fact that the oil viscosity is now 5w-30 instead of the thinner 0w-40
BCS_ZHP

Or could be the Liqui Moly too...
My GMC truck recommends 0W20 synthetic, used that for the first 50K miles. My mechanic buddy warned against oil this thin after the first 50K miles, so last couple of oil changes swapped to BMW 5W30 synthetic. Now closing in on 65K, same thing, engine got quieter on cold startups.
Or could be the Liqui Moly too...
Very possible. I am going to stick with it for a couple of oil changes and see if there is a difference. Maybe even send a sample out to get tested.
I used Mobil 1 0w-40 once and I thought the engine wasn't as smooth as it was when running with 5w-30

Update:
354 miles currently on the ODO after doing an oil change and getting a full tank of gas Premium 93+. Gas gauge is currently at 1/4 and this is with strictly city driving ( no interstate )
Will report back to how many miles I drove on a single tank and the mpg.

I get about 240-280 with city driving. I blame Portland's numerous hills and my very heavy right foot. Like...I think I have a club foot. Or someone put lead liners in all my shoes.
So filled up today.
379.9 miles on a tank which equaled 23.6 mpg city driving.
I remember the window stickers for these cars stating 21 mpg for city and 30 mpg for highway driving.

+1 want to know. I'm basically ready to order Yellows this weekend.
My only shock/strut experience for the E46 are factory, Koni Yellows, and the few times I've driven NoVAphotog's car with Bilstein PSSes. The Bilstein's are quite nice; I could definitely see that as a quality alternative to the Konis. I personally really enjoy my Koni setup and it's the perfect mix of comfort and performance for my needs. Years before I had my ZHP, I had experienced the same shocks on my father's old Mustang GT and it really helped balance that car and make it more manageable, and it's what aided part of my decision to go with Koni when the time came for my car. I put the same suspension in my sister's car that had worn factory shocks/struts and it had a similar improvement for her car as well.
Can't hate on the lifetime warranty, decent price, and adjustability either.

The other alternative is a coil-over system. Something along the lines of Bilstein PSS or in that price range.
Just the cost of the Koni shocks is very appealing.

i do like the PSS, however be aware that the front height adjustment range is very limited (this is a good thing). at max height it's a bit low for me, i would like it to go higher. personally i will likely be going towards a linear spring conversion on my PSS, and that should allow me to go a little higher in the front, too.
you can't beat them for the money though - definitely the best damping, performance, and build quality (and warranty - lifetime!) in that price range.

Nah,I've read a lot about the FSDs and I think I want something a little more predictable. I know they're magical and all, but the Yellow is going to be more in-line with my plans for the car.
And yes, definitely going with RCA. Yellows with H&R sport springs is only like $80 more than ECS for just the shocks. Plus the $50 Koni rebate [emoji1303]

Koni Yellows and H&R sport springs is what is on the wife's zhp and its a great combo. This is what I will probably end up with for my car since everything else is such a huge price increase.

I just order Konis for $530 from Race Consulting Agency. This is lower than their web site listed price. Call them directly and ask for Adam Krawczuk at (888) 981-7221, extension 6.
I originally thought of going with stock. Intended to purchase from someone who had used set with 10k miles, but I decided i wanted an upgrade and new. Lots of happy mafia members on Koni made me feel it as the best choice. As well as the ability to adjust for comfort or firm will come in handy for my street and autocross driving.

Boating season over, she’s winterized now, let me know when suspension refresh is happening, would like to attend/help if I can. In August sold the go fast and bought a more family friendly boat, gave up about 5 mph @ WOT but kids much more happy, carries twice as many people and is conducive to water sports, bought 2 big tubes & 3 wakeboards, went boating every weekend from mid-August until the marina closed at end of October.
Brett’s old car has been gone 2.5 years, current owner said he’s thinking of selling for an M coupe, it just crossed 100K miles, I’m slightly tempted since I know the car so well.

Also if another zhp appears in your stable, I'm making a trip to look at it. Been a while since I spent time with great people

New boat is a big bowrider, 2002 Cobalt 262, 26.5 ft long, carries a dozen people, single 496/ 375hp engine does great, 58 mph with 2 people, 52 mph with 8 people. It’s 15 years old but only had 223 hours when I bought it, spent its life on a freshwater CT lake, rested in a covered boat slip with lift, it’s almost like new. I added 30 hours to it in 2.5 months, plan to do many more next year.

This one is identical to the BMW battery tender/charger I have... been using it for about 8 years on all my batteries: cars, boat, Golf cart, tractor.

Thread revival.
Was hoping for an early end to winter but that is not the case. So the car is still on life support.
I did however pick up a BMW Performance SSK that I am looking forward to installing.

Installed a set of z4m fcab. Doing the rtab next and then the car is going to the shop for an alingment.

Bought a set of Turner Motorsports rtab limiters from a member here. These will be going in with a new set of z4m rtab.
Car is currently up in the air thanks to the quickjack system. I will be using the rtab tool I bought from bavauto to remove the original bushings and to install the new ones.
I also installed the BMW performance ssk and a brand new zhp shift knob.

I am finally able to devote some time to car activities so the following stuff has been done since the last post.
Oil change
Trans fluid and diff fluid drain and refill
Brake fluid flush
Finished up replacing the rtab and installing Turner limiters
Air filter, cabin filter, fuel filter.
Next up is a new set of tires and getting the car properly dialed in with the suspension geometry.

Are you down to two cars at this point?

Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkCorrect. I drove the other imola zhp and enjoyed it since it's was fully overhauled.
Down to two cars now and the plan is to get this one refreshed and back to driving it.
Just sucks that parts have recently got so expensive.

Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using TapatalkI am glad to that I am not the only one. I agree Vas, price went significantly higher for all sorts of parts. I was not buying anything for almost 1 year. I see I pretty significantly bump. There is no shortage for consumable parts, but I feel like sellers are playing the global game of "shortage in global supply chain".
