Sounds like lightweight flywheel noise.

Sounds like lightweight flywheel noise.
That's exactly what I was thinking.

All E46s I have driven do that. My ZHP does it and my dads old M3 did as well. Not sure what it is though

Flywheel or input shaft.
I did a ton of research on this when I first bought my ZHP because the sound was driving me crazy.
I read numerous posts where the owner brought the car to a mechanic or called a BMW tech and they were all told the same thing- flywheel or input shaft (some posts listed one as the likely source of the sound, some the other) and that it's completely normal.
No worries.

Funny because when I first bought the car, I noticed the sound too. But now, I can't hear it even if I'm listening for it...
The sound was a very muted replica of what the lightweight flywheel sounded like in the E30. In that car, it rattled and chattered like you wouldn't believe, and made it sound like something was broken. IN the ZHP, it was very muted, and just barely audible.

I dont really ever hear it, as I usually leave the car in gear when parking

There's really no way to fix it as far as i know. I had the throwout bearing replaced cause i thought that was the cause. It has reduced the noise slightly, but not worth the 500 for part and labor for that small amount of noise.

I was worried about it at first too, and told my mechanic about it. He said it was normal, so I've just made it a habbit of depressing the clutch peddal when turning the car off, it makes the rattle go away.

You have to start worrying when you turn car off and it keeps rattling.

That would never happen, so I think he's safe. :)

Just wondering, Im having the same issue.. I have replaced the DISA and made sure there was no leaks.. yet the car still makes the same noise. I found this 03 zhp on youtube that makes the exact same noise as mine.. I tried uploading my vid but its taking FOREVER so here it is..

If you push the clutch in does the noise go away?

The noise in that video is above and beyond a slight clutch rattle. Sounds like he's got mini vikings storming the engine block in there.

well that sound is really louder than mine but it sounds similar.. when i push the clutch in or the gas it goes away.. and only makes the sound in neutral.. I have taken it to the dealer many times and its gotten me nowhere :facepalm and just for them to "diagnose" the problem is $200.. Last thing I replaced was the DISA and my valve gasket b/c i noticed oil leaking on the exhaust headers.. the noise went away for a while and now its back.. I will try to get a recording b/c this things happens mysteriously like sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't..
I know it sounds horrible but any takers what it could be?

Thanks John (and all who contributed) - this thread is good stuff.
Is this issue documented in the ZHP FAQ? I will check later - on handheld now...

The FAQ doesn't really get into issues like this. Too many possibilities, so there is no definitive answer. Not the kind of FAQ I would want to provide an answer for.
