Hi all,

I acquired a gorgious Titanium Silver/Gray Leather ZHP 10 days ago. Now that I have this beauty in my garage, I am trying to make it even better, both cosmetically and mechanically.

Starting Point:

The car is 10/03 production, but didn't get registered until 07/04. Just over 96,000 miles on the clock. Overall condition is excellent, BMW of Irvine did a PPI, and only found a cracked fog light cover, and need new tires soon.

Exterior is 9/10, on 2 minor scratchs on the front bumper, no door dings, paint is still smooth and shining.
Interior is 8/10, super clean and except the drivers seat, all others are in mint condition.

Service history:

Brakes - 10/11mm, new pads and rotors @77K and @92K
New DISA valve - @95K
VCG - @95K (the PO said spark plugs were replaced with OEM ones, but I did not see that on the receipts)
All belts/pulleys - @95K
New battery - @88K
Driver's window regulator - @89K
DSC module replaced @77K mile, cost $1,100, ouch
Cabin and engine filer @92K
Tail light grounding recall is performed @82K
New fuel pump per PO, but no receipt
Front Control Arm Busing - @65K

That's it, just average.

1. The first thing I attend is the driver's seat - the leather is dirty with creases and minor cracks. I used Glipton first, which cleaned a bit and the lotion certainly softened the leather a bit. Applied Leatherique yesterday, which worked way better than Glipton. It removed loads of dirt, and I can now see the original light gray color in most part of the seat. One more round might remove the remaining dirt.

Unfortunately, the cracks are still too noticeable so that I am considering recover the seat with OEM leather. My local upholstery specialists (refered by BMW dealer and used by many other new car dealers) quoted me $550 labor with $1,050 aftermarket customized cover. Well, Tischer BMW sells both back and bottom pieces for about $1100, so it will cost about $1,700. Not cheap, but it will be a brand new seat. And if I ever going to do it, probably better do it earlier than later.

Several people suggested to look for a better used driver's seat. Based on what I saw on ebay and other forum, mine is actually in good shape. Maybe I am just too anal.

2. I have ordered the re-wrapped wheel from Mike at Coby Wheels - Just got it, need to put it on this weekend.

3. I also ordered the following from Tischer BMW: a new 6-speed shift knob, The Aux output cable, a new key fob emblem, a new cup holder (it is one of the best part of e46 I like vs e39), a new Windshield cover/cowl grille (it's old and cracked) - Arrived

4. The car is missing the spare, and I did not find anything decent locally. So I got an aftermarket 17" wheel with a new 225/45/17 tire from tire rack. About $200 out door.

I am thinking of the titanium/shealth turning signal light bulbs since my car has the clear lens. But I heard that are much darker and can hardly be seen under direct sun light, so still weighing on them.

I am taking the car to the local mechanic for some fluid changes (transmission, rear diff, brake fluid, fuel filter).

It also needs new shoes, which I will attend later on. I am thinking of Kumho 4x.

This is it for now. Cooling probably is not due for another 10K miles or so (the car is at 96K now).

Will try to post some pictures.

Thanks for reading.

Henry

Sorry, I am not sure how to insert pictures into a thread, but here is the link to some pictures.

Looks like a solid plan.

I've been running the Kumho Ecsta 4x for about 20K miles now and absolutely love them. Great tires.

Hey Henry!

Have you considered just getting a new (used) seat? I bet you can find one for less than what you're paying for new upholstery. There was a member here who was considering selling his gray front seats. Seriously, this might save you a ton of money that you can put toward other mods/upkeep.

By the way, I live pretty close (Santa Cruz) so holler if you're in the area. Did you hear about the Bay Area meet we're having in November?

Henry, regarding the turn signal light bulbs... what I did was order the BMW white bulbs and file down one of the nubs just enough to allow install of the bulb into the holder. The "white" bulb is clear so you don't see them in the housing but when lit has a yellowish hue to the light. I haven't had any issues with DMV regarding them and have had them ever since owning BMWs. Just a thought. Overall it looks like you have a good plan on what to do to your ZHP :thumbsup

But if you have clears, and are subject to inspection, you will not pass because they won't blink amber.

Just a heads up.

Dane, I am subject to safety inspection and have passed RI inspection 7 years now with these "white" BMW bulbs... I have them on both my BMWs. What I'm having a hard time with are my window tints....

I failed for white bulbs in my clears. This is state dependant. I can't see where he lives so I thought I would mention it.

Stealth bulbs are the proper fix for this.

OP is in CA, so I doubt he'll have issues with the bulbs, since we don't have inspections outside of smog. Cops are on the lookout for tint, though.

I've had no problems with mine and they were put on a few months ago.
A buddy of mine got pulled over for speeding and the cop mentioned to him that his clear bulbs they were illegal. The cop didn't feel like they were enough of an issue to write up a fix-it ticket. So I don't think they're too worried about them.

Good to know. I was considering tinting my fronts.

I went with a lighter 30% tint and (knock on wood) I haven't had any issues. Sometimes I'll roll down my windows if I'm near running alongside a patrol car just to be safe. They just seem too busy to worry about a light tint. I've heard from many drivers of "higher end" cars with dark tint that they haven't had issues either. I didn't want to increase the risk going dark. So, you can do it, but know there is some risk associated. Worst case, you get a ticket and have to remove it. Of course, that is for LA so Norcal might be different.

There is truth to this. I ran no plates on my ZHP and no cops ever gave me a second glance, but the young guys in the JDM (and USDM, to some extent, Mustangs/Camaros) crowd are always getting fix-its for them. Same story with tint. I'd venture to say that cops tend to ignore higher end cars for the most part. I know plenty of people with nice cars with front tints as well that never have issues. It's a nice perk. :)

FYI, and for all who're interested - your car wasn't 'missing' its spare. A Spare Tire Delete is actually one of the line items of the ZHP package; this is presumably for weight savings.

If it is the OEM BMW "silver" bulbs - they do blink yellow

I think you are right about weight saving. I just found that the tool kit has nothing in it. PO probably took them all out to get the weight to minimum.

On a side note, I have trouble to post picture into the thread. When I insert picture and put URL to my Flickr page, the pictures won't show up. Should I add them as attachments?

Dane,
In CT, the law is that they must blink amber or at least an off-white color (slightly yellowish). There are lots of older Volvos that have the off-white bulbs in them from the factory and they pass just fine. We don't get inspection here, of course, but they didn't change the bulbs based on what state the car was sold in to make it pass, so I would think that a bulb that blinks like that would pass in VA. You might want to check the state law just in case.

If this is a concern for anyone, you could always go the LED route. My bulbs are 25W CREE LEDs. They blink amber and cannot be seen from the outside unless you stick your nose up against the taillight housing. As far as looks go, it looks perfectly clear with no color tinge, but when on, they blink brighter than OEM halogen bulbs. Mine are CANBUS, so no bulb-out errors and no hyperflash.

New Coby Wheel and weighted shift knob installed.

Quite interesting, I just noticed that the old shift knob was not weighted, and it feels day and night. The weighted knob makes the shifting much more smoother, and even the 2nd and 3rd gears that I have been struggling to get a smooth engagement are now effortless.

The foggy headlights lense was restored by a local car wash place during last week's visit to my local indy shop, who did all the fluid changes and fix the cracked rear diff mount (It sucks that the dealer missed that during the PPI)

If you are referring to the turning signal bulbs. I haven't attended them yet, but quite determined to order 2 pairs from Khoalty to see how they work. $10/set is cheap enough to try.

I also ordered the Kumho Ecsta 4X from Tirerack today. The cost is similar to what I can get from America's tire local store (the saving of tax offset the shippping fee), but the local installer I pick will do a free alignment check, and I have my fingers crossed that the alignment reading will come out fine.

Will keep you guys posted.

BTW, the airbag removal really tested my patience. Oddly, I popped the right side in 2 min. then couldn't get the left side for over 30 min. :confused

Finally had my driver's seat rewrapped with OEM leather. I think I am pretty much done now, and just going to enjoy the ZHP.
