View Full Version : Rear Inner Tire Tread Worn Down

Hey Folks,

I noticed that both of my rear tires have extreme inner tire wear. I am running Stock rear 255-35-18 Toyo T1-R tires. Does this type of wear pattern sound normal at all? It seems to be uniform on both sides. I've read on E46F that "sport" suspension has a bit of negative camber for handling. Maybe I an alignment would have prevented this type of wear?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Depends on what you classify as extreme wear.

The insides of the tires wearing first does sound normal....

Negative camber isn't your issue, more-so it is the toe that is effecting the tire wear.

EDIT: You can reduce toe on the rear suspension, but isn't recommended since you can actually decrease stability under braking and the amount of power you can get down to the ground.

I would make sure the toe is within spec though, however. I personally run -1/4 total toe (-1/8th on each wheel) and like how I have it set-up

Zhp's wear on the inners much faster than most cars, very normal.

It could be related to a bad rear control arm bushing. This is what I pulled out of mine last month.

I agree with the toe settings part - but only the inner wearing...do you really think it isn't neg camber (which our cars come with from the factory) causing the uneven wear?

Either adjustment could cause it. If the wheels are toed out, that would cause the tires to ride outward causing inner tire wear. Negative camber does have more of an effect though. Couple negative camber with toe out and you have a recipe for disaster as far as inner wear goes.

Here are pics of the left and right rear tires. Ill definitely need to replace them soon. Thanks for the tips thus far.

Rotate them, don't replace. Still plenty of life in there, just needs to switch out sides.

Why not? Just dismount each tire and put it on the other side. They will spin in the same direction. Just to clarify, I'm not saying just swap wheels between each side... swap the tires between each side.

Negative camber is not the problem here. It is more likely the toe which is causing this type of wear on the tire.

These Toyo tires are actually unidirectional so you can rotate them from the passenger side to the drivers side to eventually wear them the same way

Yep, this is what I did with my Hankook RS3s....dismounted and swapped to the otherside

2 years, 3 track days with around 30 or so Autocross days.

You can see, there is no tread on the inside tires...and limited on the outside.

Ah, so ur dismounting the tires and moving them over so the inside of the left tire would be become the outside of the right tire instead of a standard rotation?
