The Retrofit Source has these used E46 Bosch projectors for sale, including bixenon pigtails and bulb holder rings. Best of all, it's only $100 for the pair!

Someone get these while they're hot!

Is this a direct swap or are modifications required?

Modifications are required, mainly to the bi-xenon shutter wiring. Its not too terribly hard, Charlie has that DIY. A great way to go if you don't want to pony up for high dollar retrofits.

I tried doing the E90 retrofit with Charlie's DIY. I chickened out after I had the entire housing apart... The fella with the bowl refurbishment sounds like a really good option to me...

Charlie's DIY won't work with the E90 retrofit, two different setups. Charlie did the DIY necessary for using the bowls that are posted here in this thread, the ones offered at TRS. The E90 retrofit is a completely different animal...

Just remember that the bowl refurbishment is temporary. This projector solution is a permanent one.
Plus, this is sooooo much cheaper. There are circuits you can buy where you don't have to modify the harness to make this work; these are plug & play circuits that will allow your bi-xenon functionality to function as it should!

Sorry I don't have the link anymore and can't find it in my old emails... I'm sure Charlie can chime in on this one.

By the way guys, I have one extra AL headlight laying around from parts car. Not sure if anyone might ever need parts from it. Not usable, but all parts are intact.

Pretty cool to see these for sale - I know a lot of people who have been looking for them over the years to replace the ZKW projectors.

With that said, I'd pay the extra $40 for the FX-R 3.0 - a better projector IMO (speaking from experience). And it's only $5 more if you add the ZKW-R clear lenses to the Bosch purchase.

Why isn't it useable? I have one projector whose shutter refuses to work at all and the other one will only come on sometimes, delaying deployment more and more each time you flip the switch until it eventually stops flipping altogether leaving me with no highbeams at all. I was hoping to troubleshoot with another projector... do you think it would serve its purpose for that?

Not sure. But the guts of the headlight wobble inside. Some sort of mount is probably broken.

I'd reach in there, cycle the shutters by hand a few times, then lube the plungers lightly with di-electric grease.

BP, they've been on TRS at $100 for at least 4 months now. I was thinking about buying them to put in my ellipsoids that will be going in the E21 but the lighting project has taken a back burner for a while now.

The circuit BP is talking about comes from Wokten Tech's website. Here's the link: http://www.wolstentech.com/products/bixenon/bixenon.php (http://www.wolstentech.com/products/bixenon/bixenon.php)

As for my DIY....I still have to update pics so the DIY is picture-less at the moment. I haven't had time to update my DIY so if you have questions send me PM :thumbsup

Impressed with this setup... Its still not perfect as are the other retrofits, but being this one is essentially a "kit" it is quite easy.

Overall it took us about 4 hours to finish the work, and that was including a 20 minute break to Skype with a member regarding his new 4.0 LCM. :) After we completed the work, it was then time to take a drive and align them.

Overall, a job well done! :thumbsup

OK guys I've got some Before and After pics.

The difference is not as noticeable in the pictures as it is in person but you still bet the idea.

Wasn't too bad before compared to some but the lighting afterwards is amazing. I know, I have the same projectors from a M3. :thumbsup
(Now if only my damned high beams worked properly...)

Yeah the main issue before was at dusk or on a dimly lit road. On an almost pitch black road the old lights were still decent but anything brighter than that and it looked like I had nothing.

If the high beams you are having issues with are these bowls then what Jon and I found is that when engaged the bi-xenon flapper was getting caught on the shroud.

Quick hit with the Dremel fixed it.
