Today while I was coding some modules on my car, I found a harness/loom of wires under the steering column plastic cover. It was just hanging in there. Everything functions as it should on the car....

I didn't look further than what I could see from squatting next to the car. I'm going to investigate it tomorrow after work, but I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to what this could be!

Where EXACTLY (can you get a pic) did it come from and what colors are the wires?

Guessing they power the chime that sits under the dash.

GS3 + TT4

I was hoping you'd chime in on this one, you should be an expert at this now!

I'll take photos of everything tomorrow and post here. Stay tuned!

The chime comes from the cluster.

There is a pannel knock out for a speaker under the dash. Some cars have it and others don't. My 328i has one.

There is only one other thing down there and that's the footwell light.

Does that illuminate when you open the door, Wyatt?

I wondered what that was. Perhaps it's done different between different E46s, but the beeping you hear when you turn your key comes from a small speaker on the back of the cluster. It's actually very loud, just muffled by the dash and such.

Yup. My ZHP doesn't have one either...but that could very well be a cluster difference.

That's probably it! I don't recall my footwell light working. I'll verify in the morning.

Guys,

The footwell light is working just fine. Yikes... I'm going to chase it down tonight after work.

I have a chopped bundle of wiring that goes under the steering column in my garage somewhere...get me the colors and I'll tell you where they go.

I don't think that's OEM wiring. OEM wiring is two tone.

Also, I don't see anything with three wires in the area. Closing thing I found was the clutch switch.....yeah.

I think somebody wired something there before. Alarm of some sort?

Interesting. It was routed into the factory harness and that harness looked untouched...

So that means the previous owner owned a crimper. Can you take a picture of the harness?

Maybe it was to power some accessory he didn't include with the car
