I get the whole OEM thing, but I think the Performance Airbox is overrated. Look at how all these guys jump on it! :dunno

Yeah, overrated. Just like how the performance strut bar is overrated. People still get them anyway because they're rare and cool-as-hell OEM parts.
I got my strut bar because it's hands down the best looking strut bar out there IMO. I'm sure there are folks who think this air box is the best looking one as well in their eyes. Who knows.
It's nice to look at, that's for sure.

As far as output goes it's ranked up there with the best as well. Albeit we all know we're not going to get huge gains out of an intake. The performance intake is the best looking intake out there.

Yeah I have to say I did notice a pretty decent difference between the afe oiled I was running compare to this oem performance intake. I will probably do a icv cleaning before winter to make sure everything checks out.
I would buy it. Looks cool and it is a factory upgrade.
Saying that is overrated is a little bit absurd.

I use to wonder what all the hype was about BMW Performance items until I seen Randos! That strut bar is a work of art and its soooo dam light!!!

Sure you can say they are "overrated" and that might not be far off. However, the perf intake gives +7 (to +10) HP (even though you don't feel it), looks cool as hell (like you said), and is OEM. (BMW under-rates the HP at +3). The strut bar is pure eye candy, is feather-weight, and again OEM. You could pick it up with 2 fingers, and it helps prevent mushrooming. Combined, it makes the engine a looker, so yeah, I can see why they'd want it. Especially that it's "rare" now. Gotten at a good price, it's worth it IMHO. At the original or high resale prices of today, that would be a tough one.
EDIT: Thanks Gary, didn't see your post.

No Prob, if you ever come across that deal again just remember who doesn't have one. LoL...
If you say this intake is over-rated, then alot of factory upgrade performance parts from various manufacturers like nissan, honda, bmw, dodge, etc are in the same category.
Any factory based upgrade always carries a higher price tag then parts that are aftermarket. But you get what you pay for and know that it was engineered properly.

I'm going to go cry in a corner, now. :) I do agree, though, OEM Performance are some of the best looking parts ever.

Lol. I'm with you from a price perspective, but the fact it is OEM keeps the price up and there aren't that many that people are willing to get rid of.
I would purchase the OEM strut bar for $300 because it looks sweet, but the $500-700 price tag has kept it out of my engine bay. Same goes for the intake. I would easily buy the performance intake if I could do a break even sale on my aFe, but most likely not possible.

True that the strut bar has been on the market for about 500-700 over the past few months. Probably only seen 1-3 at the most. They are getting more rare to come by.
I got a great deal with my intake and found someone in Cali who I swap internal parts to make each of our intakes fit on our cars. That was just luck when I was in the market for an intake.

Man I sold my cf strut bar for $80 on top of a m3 strut bar.

And I did see one example of a perf bar cracking in two on the track. So just a fair warning for those of you who have one and track your cars.

ESS tested many of the available airbox's, CAIs and no filtration, etc
They recommend the BMW P intake over all others for their TS systems

Could you please send me a link to it in PM?
I have the bar and have had no issues of the sort the past 2 track days. I would like to see the circumstances of that particular case if possible.
Thanks!

He mentioned he had loose coilover strut mounts. I wonder if that would contribute to something like this?
I'm not engineer so I've no clue. :dunno

Coilovers + northeast roads - xi reinforcement plates... honestly not surprised the brace snapped. I guess I should look into a M3 brace for DD use and put my CF one on the wall until I take it somewhere to show

According to the tracking info, it should arrive on Tuesday. I can't wait to put it in...

The intake arrived today, and installation was a breeze. I used a bit of silicone to lube up the gasket where the MAF sensor seats, and that helped it to slide in easier. Aside from that, I followed the installation instructions to the letter. It only took me between 20-25 minutes from start to finish.
I noticed a throatier sound as I was pulling out of my garage (and back in again), but when I took it on the road, it sounded pretty close to stock until I got up to around 3,500 RPM. At that point, I could tell a difference. There was a deeper sound, but it wasn't offensive in any way.
The twisties I drove after installing didn't really allow me to take the car above 50-60 MPH, and I wasn't able to maintain those speeds for very long. I'll be curious to see if I can feel a difference on the highway, but for now, I can't say the butt dyno felt any additional power. However, there did seem to be a slight change in the way the car felt during acceleration. I can't say it felt more powerful, but it felt as though it pulled more smoothly through the RPM band, and each gear seemed to last a bit longer. This could have been my imagination, but I have noticed a similar effect from intakes I have installed on other cars.
Thanks to the OP for posting the install instructions, and to others for their tips.
