This was in response to Marc, who asked what it felt like.
I haven't driven an SMG car, but I have been a passenger. I can offer the following observations:
When just cruising around town with the shift ferocity set low, it's not bad from a feel perspective. I do not, however, like how it slips the clutch at pretty much every shift. This would concern me from a clutch wear perspective; I would imagine you wouldn't get too many miles out of a clutch. I don't know how it would compare to a manual, but since I rev-match every single shift to the best of my ability, I can probably still drag my clutch use out longer than the 200k it currently has on its original clutch. I'd research this if you're concerned about clutch wear and see what the facts are for the SMG tranny.
When the car is being nailed, it feels as though someone is take a hammer the size of a Ford Excursion to the back of the car every time it shifts (if the shift mode is at the strongest). It is extremely uncomfortable. This feeling is achieved if the foot is kept planted on the floor when shifting. I'm not sure if the problem is alleviated in this shift mode if you let off the gas when you shift, but I do know that letting off the gas as you would in a manual to shift when you're just putting around town greatly improves the shift feel. It still feels clunky if you don't lift your foot, so just drive it as you would a manual around town and you'll be fine. All out though, all bets are off... it may shift fast but I can't imagine all that hard shifting is going to be very good on diff bushings and other driveline components...
Personally, I feel the ferocious shifting nature of the the SMG tranny suits Justin because he likes to have fun. It's a raw experience and can be fun when you don't have to worry about heel-and-toe downshifting when coming in hot from a straight on the track...

Dang man! If you want a SMG, I won't stop you, I just prefer 6MT over everything else. I strongly feel I get the best driving "experience" with driving MT. But if you want the SMG, that's great, I just hope you don't regret not waiting for a 6MT car if that's what you really want.
I don't mind if that's your preference. It's mine, too. I just don't bash SMG like everyone else seems to do because it doesn't deserve it. That's all.

Being a true man who drives manual, I would never consider SMG. Firstly, I don't need a computer to do things for me. I regularly check e-mail with my own brain by tapping into the matrix like Neo himself. Secondly, I want to have total, pure control of the car, though park assist would be epic. Thirdly, complicated parts mean complicated fixes; I'd rather worry myself with simple fixes like welding the subframe, reconfiguring the cooling system, and adjusting valves with my eyes closed every 7 miles. Fourthly, all of my friends who use the internet say SMG is terrible, and I believe everything my friends say they read on the internet.
In sum, no SMG for me. :)
Joking aside -- I've never driven it. How's the experience?
It was awkward at first. You can't tell when clutch is going to engage on a downshift so I found my head bobbing back and forth a bit, but I've read up a bit and people seem to say that can be avoided by being off the gas when you downshift. Other than that, it was nice. Full WOT shifts were just beautiful. Knock you right back in your seat.

Every 15,000 miles you have to tension the balance shaft belt...That's a shit load of work to just do that. I'm having reservations, but if insurance gives me a princely sum to take care of things, I will have a Full PPI and give it a belt service. Just to give me some time out from under the car.

Okay.
So, engaging first feels exactly like a manual, except that *you* don't feel it through your leg. The rest of the car feels exactly like a manual would engage. Depending on how much throttle you give it, engagement time and severity will change. Very comfortable, though. People say engaging on SMG is jerky, and I found that completely untrue. It engages consistently and correctly every time. Also, you CAN slip the clutch slightly to make smaller maneuvers without engaging fully. I don't why people say you can't. The clutch will only lock if you give it enough throttle and enough time. Let off the throttle before you fully engage, and the clutch will re-open, just like a manual would had you slightly engage the clutch. It may be more inconvenient because you control it with an electronic throttle pedal instead of a hydraulic clutch pedal, but the same level of control can be exercised through both transmission types.
Typical of BMW, the 1-2 shift sucks. On the throttle, off the throttle, it simply feels like it takes too long for RPM to drop between gears. I felt the same way about both of my manual ZHP's, as well. Slightly alleviated by wringing out first gear a bit, which puts a smile on your face, but it will be annoying when the car is cold.
The rest of the shifts are awesome. It IS jerky if you don't let off the throttle, but once you get the hang of letting off the throttle between shifts, it's smoother than a manual (unless getting it perfect every single damn time is second nature for you). No joke. Let off the gas, shift, and ease back into it and you'll hardly feel anything. I caught myself looking at the cluster a few times because I wasn't sure if the car had even shifted, that's how smooth it was.
Highway driving was nothing special. Downshifting and upshifting were far easier and more comfortable on the SMG than they were on my manual ZHP.
I don't even remember what shift setting I was on, honestly.
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. I don't feel like it detracts from the driving experience at all, on the contrary, not having to shift gave me a bit of a different outlook on driving. I could get into the powerband much faster than I could with a manual. And to get it into neutral, I didn't have to push a pedal in. Just a flick of the wrist to N. Wanna get back into gear? Flick it back right. It'll choose the right gear for you and you keep going, even if your speed and incline have changed.
That still leaves the costly repairs if it does decide to fail, but I found the driving characteristics of SMG to be very enjoyable both times I've driven them.

I have been driving my SMG car for 4 months and I can say it's been like learning how to drive a new transmission all over again. Coming from my 6MT ZHP for a decade has helped as I understand the sounds and what the computer is doing as the SMG transmission shifts. As Dario said it gets bashed only because forums are usually about the negativity of something or needing help because something broke. You get a limited amount of "I love my ZHP" threads because they're mostly about turning something chaotic into something of order.
A lot of people who bang on SMG are people who might have only drove it around the block, not driven it enough to understand how to operate it smoothly just like any manual transmission, or people who haven't driven it and just jump on the bandwagon to feel accepted with another "cool" forum member.
I have to say that at first I missed my 3 pedal action. My left leg was looking at me with a WTF face. It dove into the abyss a few times trying to hit the clutch pedal. As Dario has pointed out accuracy about how SMG operates, I have to second what he says. Once you figure it out, you may come of liking to it. The big learning curve is figuring out when the computer is disengaging the clutch and engaging it since that's the only loss of control over 3 pedals. After 4 months I still don't have it perfect but I never shifted perfect in a manual after 4 months either.
Two months ago I had the opportunity to program my SMG computer to Euro CSL software as well as tune the ECU to react more aggressively with the CSL software. This made making a "soft" North American SMG software tolerable to totally enjoying a now grown up stick shift "computer partner" driver.
So with the SMG computer tune, all upshifts are quicker under the same setting at the NA tune, They are more accurate and clutch engagements are faster and more accurate. If you want 1st to 2nd can bang out nicely with limited delay and no chassis disruption at any RPM. The urgency of the shift depends on how much you have the throttle pressed. You don't need to release the throttle for the shift to happen. Releasing the throttle instructs the computer to shift the slowest relative to your shift speed setting. During that shift, I often hit the throttle too early as the clutch is engaging, riding the clutch for a split second so I will get used to the delay as I always leave the mode in S3. If I ease off the throttle 30% as I upshift, the shift is fast, accurate, and smooth. Going into WOT will bang out the shift fast and hard at whatever RPM you choose to shift at, 2500 or 7000, it'll do it good without delay. This tune also allows an all out "go bananas/rip apart your reinforced subframe" launch control mode maxing out at 4,000RPM vs approx 1,800RPM in NA mode. Good thing you can launch at whatever RPM you'd like but if you floor it, the RPMs will stop at 4,000 until you release holding the shift knob forward. The NA launch control seemed perfectly capable when I tried it so I don't know when a 4,000RPM launch is even optimal other than shaving 0.01 seconds off your quarter mile drag which you won't get to because you twisted your driveshaft off. LOL.
With the ECU tuned for the CSL SMG software, downshifts are rev-matched near perfectly throughout the rev-band, whether you're downshifting from 3,000RPM to 5,000RPM, gear skipping from 2,000RPM to 6,500RPM, or just lazy shifts from 1,500RPM to 2,500RPM. Super fast/aggressive rev-match blips happen when you're above the 3,000RPM range. That's equivalent to you WOT to blip. The North American program would just release/ride the clutch smoothly without blipping when off throttle. You have to be on throttle for it to blip which was then, only good for acceleration. The CSL ECU tune allows for rev-matched clutch engagements no matter what you're doing with the throttle just as you can do in a manual.
After driving manual for 10 years, I still miss it. Having this tune on SMG software makes me not need to swap the transmission. But when it does cause a $500 or more bill, I will put that towards swapping to a 6MT as there is no replacement to feeling the car shift in such non-timed casual environments as public roads. Racing on a track I could totally appreciate SMG since one bad shift could unbalance a car already at it's traction limit sending you into a very uncontrollable situation.
If you want to know more about M Track mode......let that be another novel. LOL.

Funny enough no coin was involved.....he traded a 993 non turbo auto and a 930 slant nose for it.
The 993 base like 35k miles on it and I think the vue of the two cars he traded was like 60kish......
But damn.....28 and a turbo? Dude knows what's up.

If my car is ever involved in an accident (knocks on wood) I would want it to be totaled too. I would be sad, but I wouldn't want a repaired vehicle.

As for being lost to P-Cars, I've always told my better half that if I ever was to "outgrow" BMW, it would probably be to Porsche. Not sure that will ever happen, but I'm ok with that if it doesn't. I like SUV/SAV's too an P-SUV's instantly look dated when a new one comes out. The previous generation instantly looks like it is 20 years old although it might just be a year or two old. I don't understand it. Meanwhile used BMW SAV's just age gracefully IMO. Maybe I'm warped.

But its SO ugly, and its brand new. I prefer the x3 M-sport, and dare I say the x4 even to it. But I really prefer a CPO e70, new isn't in the budget so neither the Macan or the x4 (or a new x3 M-sport) will happen. All of that said, the 2007 Honda CRV EXL Nav we have is paid for, 1-owner, just rolled 112,000 miles and has had absolutely no problems. It will be very difficult to justify trading it in. Although it isn't AWD it gets around great in the snow and ice too.

Car update: She's gone. Damage estimated at $7571.20. Car is valued at $8050.00.
The car will payout at $8143. If I want to buy it back, they will give me $6257 and the car.
I have the option to appeal the price, I just have to find three sources from 2004 within 200 miles of zip 21014 and with 156k miles +/- 10k miles.
So if you have seen any ZHPs for sale that meet the criteria, let me know with a PM.
I need to pay off the personal loan I owe the credit union and part out the car. Then repeat the process with a newer car, or another personal loan. Only two days left in Cabo. Then the search is on.

From what I've been told I can appeal the price given to me. The issue here is that I took a loan out with extra to cover the firat uears maintenance which has already been covered. What I have in my account is minimal, and with school coming up that is what gets paid first.
For me to be 100% happy, the loan needs to be covered completely with the buy back included. Which is somewhere around a value of $10.5k which as maintained as it was, mods aside, I think it would have fetched.

The auto auction where the car is being stored has treated this car with minimal care. And I'm glad it's not gonna be in my possession. As much as I hate saying that. It gets moved and shuffled around with a massive forklift and a tire at the end keeps the paint from being damaged...
Here's what she looked like after I pulled the ALs... honestly, I opened the hood and pulled the plastic covering off of it and the bumper cover fell off.

Smoking package delete stuff
AL headlights
Hood and trunk roundels w/ MD flags
Sunglasses tray
And I think thats it. So anyone with gray interior want some cool euro pieces?

Justin, if the accompanying pic was $6K+ (Plus another $2K for me in a rental car for a month) with a new hood, fender, inner fender, bumper, headlight and no frame damage or suspension damage, your bill trying to fix your car would have been astronomical. Taking the payout & walking away was the right thing to do.

Hell, I don't recall ever seeing E46 M3's in Bridgeport, parked in driveways or on the street. I've seen one once, but I doubt that person lives here (not counting Charlie's when he stops by on our way to somewhere).

Drove the Porsche 951 this morning. Had a smile that wouldnt quit when the boost came on. I drove it for an hour and we went all around the county driving it in the twisties. Seller is comfortable selling to me, as I can do the maintenance and I will care for the car. My issue is, that it needs paint badly. So if I buy it, I will have the whole thing properly painted the newest Guards Red color 997+ models. Striped, primed and painted. Now whether that is in my price range is up to the business. Just have to shop around and find a place that does the best work at the best cost. Im confident that I can get the car for $4,500.
Now for the Estoril M3...I talked to the dealers and they cannot divulge the history of the car unless I'm the owner of the car. And that's a fucking travesty. It's title is marred because there is a mileage discrepancy. The vin for anyone who wants to look into this for me is:
WBSBL93402JR16413
It shows up in the registry as an Estoril Blue M3 made in 2002 with all the visible options matching the description. But the carfax is filthy. Gut says stay away. By I at least want to drive it and see. So 9am on Monday I will be heading south. Meeting up with Rob and then going to look at the car in Silver Spring, MD.

Considering 335's are out of your price range, yes...

Even then an M3 in decent shape is more than that, so you must be getting a killer deal on something.

Thanks Dane!
Fortunately for my wallet there's not much left to do! Very excited to have come across this car already built the exact way I would have done it.
Things to make it mine are:
Newer 17inch wheels
Performance all season tires
Short shifter
Airbag delete and steering wheel upgrade (tall people problems)
Rear hatch rattle fix
Find the leak in the hatch...new gaskets should help
968 mirrors and door handles
Some sweet Porsche decals
Everything else is just regular scheduled maintenance, which is a lot for this car but it will be a very fun learning platform for performance driving.
The rental Dodge Avenger I've been driving for the past week is getting annoying having been subjected to turbo power. Also found out that I can make it a one way trip north and drop it off at an Enterprise in the area.

Just got back to my house. Got lost...had to pay a $30 toll because I got on the Penn turnpike with out a ticket...disputing that. Had to find 95S and finally got it on track.
Some guy in a Mazdaspeed3 wanted to race. Daniel is right, that crowd of owners, however passionate they are about their cars, are a supreme bunch of douchebags. Dude was on my ass with his obnoxious blue headlights and yellow foglights. Only because I did a lil ricer fly bye (because I like to hear the turbo noises) did he come at me. Jerks.
Anyway I'm eating dinner and then driving back to Towson. House/ Cat sitting. And its right next to work :-) no long ass drive in the morning for work!
Sadly this chapter in my life is effectively closed. It was short-lived, but I had a great time with the ZHP. Taken before her time :(
Enter the Porsche 944 turbo. 27 years old and 50 thousand less miles. The fun has just begun. She's a whore for maintenance...

Wow Justin you're living the P-Lyfe now!!! May all your dreams come true with this car and let it help you learn even more about the dynamics of motorsporting.
I kind of went for a go with a Mazdaspeed 3 tonight at the front of a traffic light on a wide open highway. ///M3 vs MS3. LOL. Don't worry I showed that driver where their place was. Behind an ///M3!!!! Muahahaha. But it was a quick little bugger!! It was never a speck in the rear view mirror when I quit after hitting 80mph. That car when tuned, I'm sure would easily keep up to my car in a straight. Maybe a good suspension setup could allow it to be quicker into and during a corner because of it's weight. FWD would be a bitch exiting apex aggressively I assume.

944 photo shoot with ZHP's combined. Yes please.
Though, I'm not sure I'd trust my 944 to make it to MD at this point. The ZHP didn't even blink an eye when putting 1,200 miles on it in one weekend.
