So far it looks good but im sure it will settle down some more :-)

Car has been stalling at highway speeds and redline shifts. Read and cleared the codes, reset adaptations and now it runs like shit. Put it through some warm up cycles and restarted the car several times and the code still remains. It runs fine with the MAF unplugged, however you cannot use the Brake and Accelerator pedals at the same time...so rev matching is impossible. I have cleaned the MAF with the appropriate spray. Next step is to examine the intake boots. The codes didn't say lean or rich, just "Luftpfad" in the error read out, which means airflow auf Englisch. Included with that one were multiple cylinder misfires.

Any thoughts on this one?? I will try to get the actual code numbers when this storm passes.

I finally picked up the fender roller after I figured out how to get it running. So I will be doing that tomorrow after I replace the spark plugs and get the intake track cleaned and repaired. I have spare intake boots from the failed MS43 conversion on the 328i.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about the MAF. The MAF on our cars cannot be cleaned. It's a "hot film" type sensor, and must be replaced when it gives issues.

I also unplugged my MAF to try to troubleshoot and found that my car ran like a bat out of hell with it unplugged. Ultimately I ended up replacing it yesterday and cleared the adaptations. Runs buttery smooth now.

When the MAF was bad, I had jerky acceleration below 2k and had one hell if a nasty vibration around 3-4k under hard acceleration in first gear. The new MAF fixed all of that, despite not always having a MAF code. (Had it at one point, cleared the codes, and the MAF code didn't come back but the lean codes did).

The MAF could still very well be an issue even if you don't have codes for it.

My BMW tech friend as well as various posts online seem to agree that attempting to clean this kind of MAF actually destroys the film. My friend explained in greater detail at one point but digging through my texts to find the info will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack...

I thought I could get around it as well but I was very wrong. I tried everything under the sun except for replacing the MAF and failed miserably.
Make sure your MAF is to blame, of course, before ordering one. It is indeed a very expensive purchase and technically I couldn't afford to buy one either, but I bit the bullet and seriously cut into the Calabogie trip budget for this weekend to ensure I'm not running my car lean at full tilt (I had lean codes for both banks before the MAF change and everything else that causes lean was already addressed except for manifold gaskets).

Good luck with the cleaning... most people say it improves temporarily and the issue comes right back, sometimes comes back worse.

How much is a new MAF.... and does it need to be OEM?

Between $350 and $550, depending on where you buy. Buy online for the best price, and buy Genuine BMW.

Yeah...about that. The techs confirmed it for me. The hot plate has a film on it so any kind of silicon or spray that isn't air can deteriorate the coating. And the PO had a K&N pile filter in the stock housing be for I swapped it for paper. I have a feeling that its not an immediate failure but its definitely not good.

So my bill today was $397.74 after taxes and a heavy discount. The new MAF element looked totally different than the old one. The coating was different and had a brownish hue to it. The issue is fixed and the car runs great. Guess the new plugs and boots added to that :-) all free of course.

Remember, it's gotta be the right part number. John, that MAF will only work for the 3 pin cars. The ZHP and other cars running MS45.1 need the six pin MAF.

OEMBimmerparts.com is the best place to look for parts, if I could have waited for shipping I could have bought from them.

ZHP MAF (http://www.oembimmerparts.com/BMW_Mass_Air_Meter_OEM_13627566983_p/13627566983e46.htm)

So to update: before the MAF failed, it was showing soft fail signs and tended to lag when I would romp on the throttle. I almost felt sick thinking about what the issue was. Mostly felt like the clutch was slipping, as if there was a delay when the throttle was mashed and when the car accelerated. It lagged excessively under 4100 rpm when the DISA opens then everything was cool. It was bucking and dipped at 2000 rpm when it was a cold engine start.

As of the day I've driven it, the stumbles are from and the DISA dip and 2000 rpm dip are gone. The car runs like a stuck pig.

There is no way in hell I'd put that in my car. When it comes to important ignition equipment, I trust nothing but BMW parts.
I even thought about putting the VDO MAF in knowing that VDO is a good brand but still decided against it. Don't want to risk it at that point.

Oddly enough, Justin... my car still runs like shit below 2k rpm. It's jerky as fawk; it's impossible to drive smoothly and has become impossible to rev match on the upshift as well. I don't understand what the hell is going on... the codes have not returned in a week yet, so I know the MAF resolved that issue.

My car is running great. What's your engine maintenance condition? Anything nearing or needing replacement? What have you done recently before the MAF replacement?

I'm doing my CCV next pay period. I have a feeling it's OE and in need of the Cold Weather kit. I though about the catch can but there's no reason to redesign the system. I also need to do belts and pulleys I have a nice belt squeak when I shift at WOT. Looking at gatorback or Dayco W belts.

Everything is up to date except for cooling system. I can't believe I already put almost 120k on it since December 2010...

Regardless, there isn't a thing I could think of that requires maintenance with regards to performance. The only thing I skipped was post cat O2 sensors since they don't really do anything related to how the car runs...

A soft fail with no codes will exhibit extreme power loss (Limp Mode engaged), lopey idle and hunting. If BP can drive his car normally his issue isn't with the cam sensors. Although if he has the cash, new OEM sensors would be ideal around 200k miles.

I reset the adaptations with the computer, but didn't seem to make a difference. Today I unplugged my battery to see if that would do anything and it seems to have helped a lot. I'm afraid of it coming back though... it's a nearly damaging experience to my sanity. lol

Yeah have you reset the adaptations? How about the E-Pedal adaptations? How are your plugs and coils? If the coils are OE, I would replace at your mileage.

$32.50 per coil at OEMBimmerparts.

What management software are you running?

Sent from my GS3.

Not sure how to reset the E-Pedal adaptations... would the battery dis/reconnect do that? If so, I did that today. Let's see what happens...
4 of the coils are original, 2 were replaced recently with used ones. It was on the list to do all 4 but dayum,

http://media.tumblr.com/5ab6927123017034e8c3eb1eab5d1a3a/tumblr_inline_mmsyzcOuXw1qz4rgp.jpg

Down the road it'll be done. Cam position sensors should be fine; the car drives and idles fine, just jerky below 2k.

Still clear, Justin? No issues resurfaced?

So basically, I left work and about half a mile down the hill, I understeered into the Lexus at 3000rpm in Second gear. I scraped into the rear of a Chrysler T&C ahead of the Lexus. It was just after 9pm and about 73 degrees out. Tires were nearing the end of their life expectancy but not bald. No idea why they didn't grip for the turn. What done is done. Headed downhill taking the turn onto Cromwell Bridge. The lights were green so no need to yield. Very possible the crosswalk reflective strips had some kind of effect, but the driving conditions were the same as usual. I just keep replaying the crash in my mind, trying to figure out how the fuck I lived, and what the reason for the crash was.

Only bag that deployed was the steering wheel. I took my hands off the wheel before the impact. It was full lock to the right and foot hard on the brake.

Those were the rules with USAA when I totaled the TiAg ZSP. I took the graffiti trim and bought some cheap ass rim/tire combo to put on it so I could get my Enkei's. They were the wrong offset too. I could only get three lugz in each wheel. :)

Dane, did you talk to USAA first? I had a totaled car once and I (mistakenly) asked the insurance guy if I could get my seats. He said it was all property of the insurance company built into the payments so "no". I should have just gone and switched them out as they had no idea what was on there. I know because I didn't list them when I insured the car so I was not paying extra for the seats. Live and learn as I was young then and didn't know what to do. But, I'd think you want to do it quickly before they see the car and take pics.

No. I never told them I did this. They had taken it to the auction yard already. I showed up, and told them I needed to grab some items off of my car that had been totaled. They got a lull and brought it out to the street and set it down in the cul-de-sac and me and Justin wrenched on it till we had everything. Then....I let them know I was done.

I would actually consider selling mine for right at $10k. I don't think I could part ways with it for a dollar less. 2 owner, 126k always garaged (even at work and school). Its not perfect by any means, but its been well loved.

You are spot on, my friend. Our F30 is that... incredible engine and transmission in a mediocre chassis and the electronics piss me off. You really do anything, even the radio, without having to look at the display.

I paid 27K for my ZHP and at the time that was it's value. Cars depreciate, nothing we can do about that. It just makes it more affordable for those looking for ZHPs now.

That's just the way it is. The minute that car rolls off the driveway of the dealership, its a depreciating asset. Sooner or later it will end up around $3-5k range and most likely stay there as the E30s have ended up in this area.

Medical called back. I'm covered through State Farm to $2500 and then my Health Insurance will cover the rest.

Took the tags off the car today. The driver door wasn't closed all the way when I got there, we just had massive rain storms yesterday, so I'm curious if there is water damage now. I'm so annoyed with all of this. But now that I've scoured NADA and KBB it looks like my car is worth maybe $7k... So any damage that exceeds $4750 will probably total the car :(

I feel your pain on paying that kind of money. I purchased my zhp when it was young.

Isn't the ZHP a poor man's M3? I don't know if you know this, but the 944 is one of the coolest and best handling cars of the 80s. The Turbo is just that much better. And it's under $10k. My mom want's me to get something newer, with a warranty. I don't want to deal with a new car and the bulkiness of it all, I just want my sedan back :crying.

Justin, that looks like a really nice 951... one thing to keep an eye out for are the timing belt changes....got to be done every 30k miles. These timing belts are rubber, not chain. Another thing to look at is the cooling system. You have to use Phosphate-free antifreeze or the oil cooler solder will break down and oil will begin to mix with the anti-freeze....not a good thing. Look out for those things....

If everything looks fine and the PPI checks out then you will have one very fun car to drive! :thumbsup This is not a poor man's Porsche. The 914 and 924 had that title.

The 951 was one of the Porsches I have wanted....improved interior/dash over earlier generations of 944 and turbo...:biggrin

Good info, Charlie. The timing belt was changed at 74k miles. It's now showing 117k miles with no recent service history for that job. I might be able to skim some off the top if I can land it. But at that price it won't last. I fucking want it though.

Then you can expect to change out the timing belt as soon as you get this car. Remember.....every 30k miles. If you're not religious on doing this you can expect very bad things to happen to your engine...I mean really bad things....

One more thing to look at is the water pump and the rest of the cooling system since you're running a turbo. Also check the turbo to make sure it does not need replacement....all I can think of for the time being....I know Prowlerflyer used to own 944s as well. Send him a PM and see if there's anything else I might have left out. I think if you get this car you will have a very fun car that you can also track and daily drive. Best of luck to you Justin!

Thanks. And I know about the bad things...I overheated my '84 944 after I lost all the coolant because the radiator had a crack in it. Warped the shit out of the head and had to have the head decked and resealed. That was a shit box of a car. Would only own 1985.5+ 944s. My mother will probably not go for this car. I've only ever totaled one car, not at fault, back when I was still on a plan with my parents. They (my parents) didn't take the first offer (1994 Acura Integra GS-R) and told me to never take the first offer if ever in that situation in the future (I went off their insurance after this accident occurred). Insurance companies want to get away with paying out as LITTLE as possible. They actually make bonus's based on how LITTLE they pay out. So I would be leery of any first offer, ANY.

Good luck!

I think you can get away with removing stuff from the car as long as it is replaced with something as mentioned above. You can swap the new wheels with shitty wheels and tires with no tread.

I think parting the car out is only worth while if you know that parts of the car are expensive and hard to find or if you have mods on the car that when removed can be resold for a lot. For example if your car had a supercharger or turbo it would benefit you to remove that and resell it if its still in goof shape.

Yeah I have parts that could easily make back the value of the car. Interior and anthracite headliner for sunroof equipped sedans would be valuable. Emissions equipment like the catalytic converters that are in the basement and the secondary air pump. I can sell the BRAND NEW MAF for $350. The tinted windows and shadowline trim finishers are worth something. The steering wheel can be cleaned up, the SILVER CUBE TRIM that only needs one replacement to be considered useful. Wheels and suspension. Differential. Exhaust. The whole car stripped of its usefullness aside from the part that makes it go will be for sale. I will have it all looked at and if I can get the car back for under $1k, I will definitely do so.

The 1 series DCT isn't as good as the M3 DCT. It's softer and ever so slightly slower. But, it is also comfortable, so it really depends on what you're looking for.
Since your driving style is more dynamic, I'd say you're probably going to find it just isn't quite "perfect" in its shifting speed. It is a great tranny though.

:rofl...I know...but if it's priced right, I have to take it. Plus, the CSL transmission software is apparently insanely fast. Theres a few fixes out there for high temp SMG pump fails, which needs a simple resistor wired inline, and I can always switch to a manual trans with the appropriate parts found in the junkyard.

SMG failure rate is highly overrated. Mostly hyped by 6MT fanboys who only offer anectodal evidence including but not limited to:

"My buddy had an SMG and didn't like it."

"My Indy said they are problematic."

"I want total control of the car." (Lmao at this one)

"Only girls get SMG."

"I don't want a computer shifting for me." Aw, mad it does it twice as good and three times as fast?

Or any other variant where a person wants to make them self feel like more of a man because they drive a true manual.

Johal E32
08-19-2014, 08:48 PM
yeah but when they fail its lots of money.. you could 6 spd manual swap once the smg pump does, but eh. Just get the 6 speed from the get go. Different strokes for different folks

ant they suck on the daily grind, they shine on the track where the fast shifting is nice.

If the SMG pump itself fails, it's a lot of money. But that happens very rarely. Usually, it's other stuff. Hood sensor, salmon relay, tranny temp sensor, that $2 spring for the 3-4 issue, etc. The second most expensive fix is the accumulator, which is $450, or the gear position sensor, which is like $350. Both of those aren't that bad, and considering that M3 owners like to charge like a $3k premium on manuals (which is hilarious, by the way), SMG to 6MT swap is financially viable. Not only that, you can jump straight to nice parts, like AutoSolutions SSK and new bushings all the way around.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still rather get a manual, as well. It just gets on my nerves because I'm looking for an M3 as well, and tons of people tell me to avoid SMG like the plague, but the only thing they can offer is "my buddy with an M told me so," when I ask them why. RAGE.

For example, two Jet Black M3's listed FS in the bay area. One is a 2004 with 95k miles and is in cherry condition. It's SMG, and he's asking 16.5k for it.

The other is a guy from M3Forum. Car has visible dents down to the paint, a few decent mods, but is overall in far worse condition. His kind old soul graciously dropped the price to $21.75k recently. What a nice guy. All because it's a manual.

+1 real manual transmission is where it's at, it's the way driving is meant to be

I agree with this. Just alot of people go with smg because they are cheaper in the used market.

Dang man! If you want a SMG, I won't stop you, I just prefer 6MT over everything else. I strongly feel I get the best driving "experience" with driving MT. But if you want the SMG, that's great, I just hope you don't regret not waiting for a 6MT car if that's what you really want.

It's all the sameone is just electronically actuated. If it breaks, swap it with Manual parts. No biggie.

But I've been doing a shit load of reading on the Porsche 951 Turbo S and it's performance capability...now I really want one. 247hp/243tq, the best part is that the car weighs 2990 lbs.

No offense, not my favorite Porsche, but my dad had a 944 turbo and said I quote "that little bastard was pretty fast". This coming from a guy that's owned the who's who of muscle cars. You name it, he's likely had it. That's good praise on an 80's looked down upon Porsche. Go for whatever you prefer bud.

None taken. It's as 80s as it gets lol. No one really loved the 944s I don't get it, just because the engine was up front and had a radiator it got no respect from the Porsche crowd. Would love to own one again, but still waiting on numbers from insurance.

I wouldn't do anything til the finances are figured out, and would wait a little after that, take your time and make the right choice.

Being a true man who drives manual, I would never consider SMG. Firstly, I don't need a computer to do things for me. I regularly check e-mail with my own brain by tapping into the matrix like Neo himself. Secondly, I want to have total, pure control of the car, though park assist would be epic. Thirdly, complicated parts mean complicated fixes; I'd rather worry myself with simple fixes like welding the subframe, reconfiguring the cooling system, and adjusting valves with my eyes closed every 7 miles. Fourthly, all of my friends who use the internet say SMG is terrible, and I believe everything my friends say they read on the internet.

In sum, no SMG for me. :)

Joking aside -- I've never driven it. How's the experience?

Yeah got a week and a half of vacation coming up. Going to let it all sink in and make an educated decision.

My thoughts are this: buy back ZHP and part it out. Pay off my loan with the CU with the funds from the pay out. That will put me in good standing with them. Apply for a new auto loan. Possibly a CPO'd BMW or similar. Or if I find a car for a better deal, take another personal loan out.

Both financing options will provide an extremely low interest rate. Best part is, my ZHP will still be around and making some cash from the part out. When it's fixed it will be a track car, eventually making my way into the Spec racing series.

Lol, Marc, I thought you would have driven at least one SMG BMW! When I test the one I'm looking at I will report back.
