Did you try pressure washing the whole dash? My rubber mats had similar deposits everywhere and an even wash at 3000psi/25 degrees and they looked brand new.

I wonder... did you try a Simple Green cleansing? Perhaps Mr. Clean Magic Eraser?
I would do a mixture of Simple Green / Rubbing Alcohol. It does an excellent job of degreasing, and let it soak for a little bit, then take a brush and scrub it. That should get it pretty clean... if not, then perhaps another dash is worth pursuing.

No. It has some fitment issues and they already said they'd give me another dash, so I won't bother with this one. If my next dash needs cleaning, I'll try it.

Getting another dash. I thought of Simple Green, but I was worried that I might damage the dash. So, I assume that SG is safe to use on it?

I doubt any issues would occur. It's recommended you dilute it anyway, but I guess you're right; not worth the effort since it has fitment issues.

They were late on pulling my dash. I was supposed to pick it up later, but I didn't sleep at all last night cramming for an exam. Crashed after I got back home and missed their phone call, so I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning.

Well, it's not really 'sorted,' it's just a different LCM in there. I sent you a text about getting the one you sent me recoded; get back to me whenever you are free.

There's still some slight gappage on the sides of the dash. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. It's even on both sides, but both sides have a few millimeters of gap.

I WANT TO KNOW WHY!

Is it the same year? Could be an undocumented design change or look for any possible adjustment in the mating parts. A junk yard cross reference book could answer the question but, don't know how to find that information anymore.

alexandre

Possible theory: you're pulling from southern cars that have had much more sun exposure than your OH car. Maybe the materials on your car haven't expanded like the car you pulled from ? Maybe the dash contracted from heat exposure, or the surrounding materials contracted after the fire ?

Also are you sure it's not like that by design ?

All the dashes are the same across the entire E46 platform, as far as I know. I can get one side to sit perfectly flush at the cost of the other side. This has been tested with 3 dashboards already. No idea what it is.

Possible that heat may have changed it, but again, I've tried 3 dashes. Everything that was near the fire was replaced except for the door gaskets, but if that gap was because of the gasket, it would only be present on one side, not both. The dash mounts onto an iron bar, which I high doubt was affected the tiny LCM fire. Again, it's both sides.

Perhaps it is supposed to be that way, but I can't find any close up pictures. Think any of you guys can pull a pic from your cars for me? It's where the side of the dash meets the body where the door attaches. From some distant pictures I've seen, it looks like it's supposed to be flush.

I think it's possible that the dash has contracted a tad. This dash does fit better than the previous one.

I wouldn't worry anout it. As long as the A pillars mate up correctly then you have everything squared away.

Haha, yes. My dad built it. We have all the necessary tile to pave the entire driveway, but before my dad could do it, economy tanked and he went back to being a trucker. Now he just doesn't have the time to pave it. Maybe we'll get to it one day.

As long as the light they emit isn't red, blue, green, or any other color explicitly defined in the law, they're legal. Since most angel eyes emit a pure white light, they are legal.

Yup, but not all salvage titles are referred to CHP. Some get by with it out at the discretion of the DMV. Out of state salvage cars all go to CHP, so I was sent because mine is from Ohio.

yes, to insure no stolen parts on the rebuild
Exactly. They also check to see that the car is in good order; for example, I was failed once because my airbag light was on. That was on my first ZHP.

Hey, guys, if I could get some advice on the shadowline window trim: My passenger side is loose, specifically, from the B pillar all the way back. I was planning on gluing it, but I can't seem to get it to even sit straight. When I get the upper portion of it to sit against the "clips", the lower rear part sits too high. When I get the lower rear portion to sit the way it's supposed to, the upper portion doesn't reach the roof rail. :dunno

I made a list of stuff I want to address on my car tonight. Without a doubt, this list will continue to grow and change, but it's a start.

Small mods/changes:

License plate delete
New angel eyes that match
New fog light bulbs (HID?)
Splitters to cover up my scratched up bumper a tad
Window tint 20% rear and 35% front
Windshield UV film
Fix shadowline trim issue
Fix rear seat flushness (slightly bent from shipping)
Source an Alcantara rear center headrest
Do some work to my rear deck or reupholster mine
Reupholster A and B pillars
Use a felt marker to hide the bleach stains on my interior carpet
///M dead pedal
Rear seat belt plastics that guide belt into rear deck
LED reverse lights (CREE?)
LED license plate lights
New mirror glass (aspherical)

Big mods/changes

Eurocharged
Refinish wheels - powder coat or paint off-white
POLISH THE CAR
Coilovers - nothing fancy, just want adjustability
Coby wheel
Sway bars
Drilled rotors and EBC RedStuff

Maintenance

New fluid in transmission
New fluid in differential
Rebuilt VANOS
Clean ICV
Clean/replace CCV
New spark plugs
Oil/filter
RTABS + limiters
Guibo
Cooling system (selectively, will inspect parts)

Anyone have any suggestions?

Very solid list my friend.

For cooling system. IMO just do the expansion tank, both hoses, thermostat and maybe waterpump.
Im over 174k miles and still on the original radiator!

Okay, so here is the problem.

When I hold the back of the trim down to it's OEM location, the top portion doesn't reach! You can see the clips on top of the trim not reaching the roof rail.
http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t662/Avetiso/OB%20ZHP/PICT0721_zps3e25ecaf.jpg (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/Avetiso/media/OB%20ZHP/PICT0721_zps3e25ecaf.jpg.html)

When I hold the top of the trim up to the roof rail, the bottom sits too high.

And yes, those are all heavy scratches you see on the paint. :(

Trim removal is as easy as sliding them off of the clips. There are catches where the trim slides into and the last two clips on the Hoffmeister Kink are pressed into place. So you have them loose already, just slide the whole piece to the rear and reset the clips that aren't in place. Then take a good bit of force and press the two rear clips onto the kink :)

Yeah that's probably worth it. In the meantime you can just clear the codes right before going to smog test, they are sporadic (if caused by DISA) and shouldn't reappear immediately.

You can't do that. OBDII enters a state where it has to cycle through a certain amount of miles before it can enter the "ready" state. If it doesn't show "ready" then it will not go through an emissions test, and they will tell you to come back after x amount of miles. This is designed so that you can't just clear codes to pass an emissions test.

My bad. Not familiar with the whole process, we have none of this up here :shifty

Although unless the sensors are actually defective the O2 codes shouldn't come back systematically.

I think you can, actually. After I reset my codes, I went through and checked all of my monitors and systems; they are all ready. You can't do that after a DME reset unplugging your battery, but I think you can still smog it.

It's irrelevant, though, because I'll drive more than enough regardless before I smog.

Smog must be different than an emissions test then. This is virtually impossible with emissions tests here; they will send you away and tell you to come back if you show up to an emissions testing station with a "just cleared" OBDII system here in CT.

I honestly still don't know what the point of this is. If the car coming has headlights on, then s/he'll see the car anyway. All you're doing by leaving it on is killing the battery...

I haven't found any "official" explanation saying this is the purpose. I'd love to see some official BMW documentation on it, because I really do wonder if this is what it's for. I find it unusual that it doesn't seem to be published anywhere.

EDIT: Nevermind. My concern of draining the battery is a non-issue because it's using such little power. It could go all night without hindering your ability to start the car the next day.

Word. I had my fenders heavily rolled but my car still rubbed. Took it into a high end body shop and they said it was the screw that needed to be grinded down a bit.

Cliffs: check that screw before your fender roll!

I fender rolled, and grinded the bolt off. I unbolted the rear bumper and took that entire threaded bolt right off. Then again, I can't even run a 10mm spacer in the rear without rubbing :X

That all depends on your future plans in regards to wheel fitment. Usually a roll will fix any rubbing and pulling is required if you have aggressive offset on the wheels.

It was rubbing already with the spacers. The reason I got spacers was because Sean needed a new mirror, and instead of cash, he paid me in spacers. That starting rubbing on bumps and under hard acceleration, so a roll was in order.

So I have a dilemma. I love the intake that BP gave to me (aFe), but, the way it sits, it puts a lot of stress on the intake boots. I want to try and run it without the housing, but the coupling is probably too heavy to hang without the housing to support it.

Any ideas? I don't want my boots to tear, but I also don't want to miss the sound. :(

I had my 2005 MINI Cooper S covered for rust warranty repair in July. They fixed surface rust spots on my rear hatch and under the taillights. MINI Canada / BMW Canada has a 12 year rust warranty. I'm not sure if it only applied to my model of car though.

It's actually a rust perforation warranty. I'm shocked they fixed that rust for you on the Mini if it wasn't through the metal.
If I remember correctly, the coverage was up to 6 years/unlimited miles up to 2003 and 12 years/unlimited from then on. The rust must have eaten a hole through the metal though for BMW to cover it, so for surface rust, you're SOL.
