View Full Version : Ring around the Mirror

I've been battling this particular rattle forever until I placed my hiking/parking permit around the rear view mirror yesterday. Surrounding the rear view mirror's ball joint there's a very loose ring of metal. It seems like it should be affixed to the rear view mirror but it somehow got loose? It doesn't seem to screw down to anything at all and I'm slightly confused on why it's there. I would just take it out if I could... I'll post a pic shortly. If anyone can help me secure/fix it or just get rid of it - let me know!

Seems like a crush washer of sorts... Try as I might, I couldn't get it securely into the mirror to surround the ball joint.

Over the weekend I decided to remove the mirror and see what the purpose of the ring is and why it is loose.

The reason the ring became loose in my situation was due to the plastic tabs that hold the ring broke most likely due to age and the heat. So then I removed the ring from the mirror to see what the reason behind it is.

When the ring is removed, the mirror itself can be removed without any force from the ball that the mirror itself rotates on. Also with the ring being removed, the mirror rotates on the ball alot easier and feels loose.

I was tempted to glue the tabs back but they are really tiny and I was missing some of them. So I decided to purchase a used mirror assembly instead.
