Okay, so I'm having the stutter issue listed here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=966614

Client went on test drive, wants it fixed before he buys. My dealer doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about, and I went to my local indy, who said it was "the most recent" software out there.

They gave me a printout. At the top is says: E46 RO10298 03
Control unit determined: MS 45.1
They were using Autologic, which said it was the most recent software.

I'm skeptical. I've yet to call an indy that even knows that these things can be flashed with newer firmware.

I've talked to Tony a bit, and he has told me how I can do it, but I don't have the cables or an XP system to do it myself with. Time is of the essence, and I REALLY need that flash done.

How can I get this done? Really starting to frustrate me nobody I call knows what the hell it is, not even the dealer.

Have you done the first step of replacing the disa yet?

No, I haven't. Considering how common of an issue it is for the ZHP, and how 95% of the people get it fixed with the update, I want to do that before I do anything else. I thought DISA was more related to the 4k dip?

The DISA is more than the 4k dip.

"The symptoms of a worn DISA valve include rough idle, lean engine codes and lack of low to mid rpm power."

Left a message for the main guy at the service department. If they don't know, or it costs too much, I'll call Frisco BMW.

Ok, I have a question: For everyone that had their DME flashed, what module was used? Was there anyone here that got an update though autologic? Or did you guys use GT1?

I updated my DME using my laptop, a K-CAN cable, and WinKFP. WinKFP is part of BMW Toolset. You'll need a battery charger/maintainer.

You can find the E46 v41 DME files out there, which solve all of the issues you are talking about. Keep in mind that after you update your DME, you should also reset throttle adaptation and knock adaptation values using INPA.

There are a lot of guides out there that tell you how to update your DME using WinKFP. It's not bad, just a bit nerve-racking since the update takes about 30 minutes.

Wouldn't I have to invest into a laptop with WinXP and buy a K-CAN cable to do this? This is probably the only flash/code related this I'll be doing on this ZHP since I'm selling it. Maybe I'd invest into such tools when I get another ZHP, but I don't know if the investment is worth it when I'm getting quotes around $120 to get it flashed at a shop.

The reason I don't just go to another indy is because the one I went to first was nice enough to let me go free of charge when they assumed my SW was the most recent one. Another shop might not be so nice. So I want to get it right and go to a shop that uses the same system others possibly had their flashes done under so I can get it done.

DME flashed. Issue fixed. Ever so slight dip at 4k, but much better than before. It's so slight it might be my imagination. And it only happens like 15% of the time I hit those revs.

EDIT: 4k is still kicking it. Very prominent. Not fixed.

Which route did you take to flash the dme?

I took it into Milt's service garage in Vallejo. They used a GT1 with progman software.

New software is v41.0. They also updated everything else in the car to the latest software.

4k dip issue is NOT fixed! After a little bit of driving it is just as prominent as ever.

Oh, ok. For some reason I had thought there was debate about whether or not it could be fixed with flash... :dunno

Oh well. At least the jerking is gone. First gear is finally smooth again.

Huh?

My car had the 4k dip right from the start and the dealer sent the DME back to New Jersey to have it updated. Problem solved.

I think there is a difference between regular old shop flashes and BMWNA (aka NJ flash).

From what I've been gathering, Jersey flash = fix, regular flash = not fix.

Don't quote me, though. It's what I've been hearing on other boards and threads.

Gotcha. Do you think when they talk about "shop flashes" they are really just resetting all the adaptations?

I was also under the impression that WinkFP could really flash a DME. Of course you would have to find a file you really trusted to flash it.

Right. Jersey flash is not dealer fix, as also stated.

Nah, they flashed it. Told me I was on Daten version 36.0 and they bumped me to 41.0, and encoded everything else in the car as well.

WinFKP can flash DMEs, it's just another way of doing it.

Maybe a Vanos job needed?? Does it rattle? I've heard people change vanos seals and it improved the dip.

Still have some slight bogging rarely, but much improved with the flash.
