View Full Version : Refreshing curb crashed wheels

My factory wheels have seen a few scrapes in their day so I want to try to repair and respray them before bimmerfest east next month.

I've looked at a couple DIY's for this and they seem to be real hesitant to do the entire wheels and only the spots that have been rashed.

Well my wheels are in fairly rough shape so I'm going to take my time and just completely redo each wheel. I have a buddy who is going to let me borrow his style 68's while I do this so I won't be without means of transport during this process and while I have his wheels and get done with mine I'm going to refinish his as well.

My question is has anyone tackled this themselves and would happen to know a good color match for the factory finish. One of the DIY's recommended WURTH wheel paint in silver stating this was the color all German cars use.

Here's a link to the DIY I'm referencing.

I'm wanting to do the whole wheel I'm just a little worried I may be biting off more than i can chew. I'm hoping to get them close to factory finish if at all possible. Have a spray gun I can use for the clear to maybe help it go on smoother.

I would take them to a shop but I want to save the cash and learn to do it myself. Figure if it turns out alright I'll be ahead of the game.

All 4 of mine are rashed so by the time I get mine and my buddys done I should have it down pat lol

It's like hanging wallpaper (well, not really), always, always, always start with the area behind the door.

Don't want to get too far OT, but whenever you embark on a new adventure (do something you have never done, i.e., refinish a ZHP wheel or 4), you may want to tryout your techniques (and improve them with time) from the first wheel to the fourth wheel. Hence start with your buddy's.

Same thing with wallpaper, if you F up the first time, better if it is hidden behind the door (out of view when someone enters).

Sorry, carry on....

That's what I thought you meant but wanted to make sure. Great words of wisdom sir. Thanks!

Anyone ever get an estimate from a shop to refinish all 4 rims?

Usual rim repair guy at the dealership quoted me 90 a tire. My tires are pretty bad imo.

Wow. DIY if done right would be the way to go then.

15x6, 2 color, $165/wheel

single color style 135's would likely be cheaper

Yes it is def not cheap...which is one of the reasons I'd like to carve out a good DIY method for this and hopefully it be of use to everyone. I've gotten a lot of help over the years through this forum and would love to make a good contribution myself.
