Because each time the oil was changed, I just happened to be at my mechanic's place fixing his computers, so he did oil changes to offset the cost of what I was going to charge him.
The only thing I know about the oil is that it's some kind of premium German blend.

During the off-season (winter), I still keep up with the 5k changes because my OCD takes precedance over everything. :rolleyes

Went to mechanic today and found a few problems that need addressing, first of which is that both front wheel bearings need to be replaced. I find this to be unusual that both need to be replaced after only ~90k miles. Maybe it's normal for some of you, but not for me.

I also need sway bar links, which is the cause of my clunking issues. Will get all of this addressed after the cooling system refresh.


Any recommendations for sway bar links? Are there any upgrades that last longer, or are more suitable for track/autocross/daily-driver (with lots of potholes) usage?

My "buddy", also known as a highly trusted and reputable european import mechanic, uses some kind of German blend synthetic. I don't remember the brand, but quite frankly don't really care. Whatever he puts in I trust, because I trust him.

Once the weather gets nice, I'll be doing my own changes, using Mobil1.

Oh well. Let this maintenance log be a reminder to those who care that preventative maintenance will go a long way, because once I replace everything I want to replace, there will be a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE gap in the entries before issues start arriving. :biggrin

I didn't have enough M1 0W-40 so we went with this. Next change is back to the usual M1 0W-40. This is some kind of high quality German oil, so I'm not worried.

A plate that I think the strut mount sits in. Not sure exactly of the precise location/function, but this is what Google turned up for me.

"Like the E36 before it, the front strut towers on the E46 are notoriously weak. Under normal driving conditions with a stock, fresh suspension it is unlikely that you will ever have a problem. But with an upgraded street or race suspension with firm springs much of the energy from pounding the road is transmitted to the thin sheet metal in the strut tower. This pounding will cause the tower to deform or even crack. Look for 'mushrooming' or deformity around the holes for the three mounting studs at the top of the strut tower. The sheetmetal around the holes should really be flat and square. Poor shocks or stiff suspensions will actually cause this sheetmetal to pop up.

These factory BMW reinforcement plates will help disperse the energy and save you from costly repairs in the future. A strut brace also helps to prevent this but these plates are designed to reinforce the strut tower from the bottom. The install over your strut mount or camber plate and simply add thickness (strength) to the strut tower. They can be sandwiched in place and do not require welding. Price is for the pair."

I hope not... My Walmart doesn't carry Mobil1 0W-40 by the large jugs and they usually don't have enough for a full oil change in the quart jugs. There are no other approved oils there either.

Mobil1 didn't say it on the back last time I checked. Dunno. Regardless, I think the LL-01 only means something if you drag out your oil change intervals. I change every 5k during track season (this timeframe). I'm happy with this oil.

Some moderate pulling to one side is what warranted the alignment. I have gone over quite a few harsh bumps at speed recently that I think that is what caused my rear tire to bubble up and to throw the alignment out of whack. The problems started around that time so I put two and two together.

Looks like I have another item to address. Slow brake fluid leak. :facepalm
Was greeted to these awesome snowy roads with a non-functioning DSC (not that it matters because I turn it off on snowy roads anyway). DSC light was on, as well as the red BRAKE light. I immediately knew it was brake fluid, and sure enough, it was down to Min. Topped off.

Luckily it's a slow leak. We noticed it was down to half when we did my CCV a couple of weeks ago, so I can at least drive for the time being. I just hope it doesn't leak all over my wheels...

The slow leak has all of a sudden become a very fast one.

I topped off my brake fluid reservoir from half on Monday. It was at minimum again this morning.
I had it checked out and it appears my seals from racingbrake.com have failed on my front left caliper. This is the second time I had an issue with brake fluid with one of my calipers (not sure if it's the same one as last time). The last time, my calipers ended up sitting in a box for almost a year before being rebuilt. :(

I'm not going as far as not recommending them. The other side is fine. I also don't know if it's just one seal that's bad without taking off the caliper. I can't not recommend a product if I only have a single failure with a small fraction of the total product (1 bad out of 12 seals isn't exactly a massive failure).

I'm going to make my recommendation based on the customer service. I have a claim in so I'll see how they handle it.

Toyota has very high standards. I expect nothing less from them!

To me there was plenty of warning. First the low fluid light came on, then when I topped it off, I kept checking it, knowing I had a leak. It allowed me to go a couple of days at a time between top offs. Also, my BMW tech friend told me that even if there was no fluid left in that line, I'd still have one front and one rear brake to stop the car as they would maintain their fluid levels due to no leaks existing in that part of the system. That to me doesn't qualify as catastrophic. :dunno
(When I think of Catastropic, I think of "holy shit I have no brakes I'm gonna die!")

Regardless, it is unacceptable. I just hope they warranty it; those seals are NOT cheap. (about $90 for just one caliper).

Dario was my rock star this week. I texted him desperately on Wednesday asking him to pull and ship the front caliper carriers and pads from his parts car and overnight them to me. He pulled through and spent a lot of time removing them for me yesterday evening and shipped them today, ETA noon tomorrow. This will allow me to install my stock front calipers temporarily until I can get my 6 pot ones rebuilt again. (I don't have the carriers anymore because I gave them to my friend who did a 330i brake conversion on his E36 and didn't get a chance to replace them for me).

I sent the email to Racingbrake.com and it turns out that the OE seal grooves are looser than the seals they sent me, so they're sending me a set of thicker seals for both calipers free of charge. :)

Don't need them. Not going to replace them unless I'm prepared to buy new cats. Emissions is due and if I replace the post sensors then they may be a little too sensitive and throw cat codes. Don't need that at this point...

My BMW tech friend told me that replacing the post sensors sometimes will detect the cats as having an issue.

Besides, the post sensors don't have anything to do with mixture anyway so if I don't have codes I'm not going to replace them.

He says it's like when you have a stuffy nose. Having a stuffy nose is like the old O2 sensors; they're not as sensitive just like how we aren't as sensitive to smell when we're stuffed up. He related replacing the sensors to the stuffiness just going away; it becomes more sensitive just as we become more sensitive to smells when we're not gunked up. He said he's seen new sensors throw codes for a bat cat due to them being more sensitive. As a cat ages, it becomes less and less effective, so this makes perfect sense to me that a fresh new sensor could potentially sniff out a cat that's a little less effective than the threshold allows.

It's not a guarantee that a code will be thrown, but we'll see. I'll replace the sensors after the emissions test, then I'll be good for another 2 years before the next test is due, giving plenty of time to remedy the issue IF a code is thrown.

Great work, BP! Your car should feel really tight after that work.

You should have your sub-frame bushings replaced with the same or higher durometer poly bushes, or they will fail prematurely. But honestly, that job is easier than the one you did!

My friend did most of the work but I was involved throughout the process, helping here and there wherever I could. Unbolting all the initial stuff was me, removing and installing the bushings (and patching things back up since I had to be elsewhere) was all him. It certainly feels nice not to have clunking when shifting.

The subframe bushings will have to wait. I already have the RTABs purchased, and will add subframe bushings to that job when the time comes. I do like the 95A durometer so I will stick with that for everything else. :thumbsup

Loving these AKG bushings so far. I will also replace my FCABs with AKG when they wear out, hopefully a long time from now...

Yeah...the 75D is a bit too raucous for a DD. I loved the noises in my 328i though...I think I will swap them to the ZHP and see what I think for DD purposes. I know I need Engine and Trans mounts badly. My shift lever moves pretty far to the right under heavy torque load.

I recommend buying the tools if you're going to do it... you can get kits for relatively low cost. The front bushings may require a different tool than the rear carrier bushing though, due to their size.

So my car is using about a quart of oil a week now. I just put a quart in a week ago, and had to do so again today. WTF...

I get the feeling my oil filter housing gasket went AGAIN. I just replaced it less than 2 years ago... [sigh]

I will be spending more time cleaning this time around as well as replacing my VANOS line washer and whatever else needs to be done "while in there".

Definitely check your OFHG and VANOS return line. Those crush washers are one time use!!

If not it could be the Oil Pan Gasket or quite possibly the Rear Main is failing.

I think I have a slow leak at the Rear Main. Won't be able to address that until I put a single mass flywheel in there...

Looks like something new came to bite me in the ass.

Yesterday I got the red brake light on, very shortly followed by the yellow traction control light. Shutting the car off and turning it back on yields the red brake light, very soon followed by the traction control light. I figured maybe it was the cold messing with the sensors or something. It also seems that ever since the temps dropped to 10 degrees or lower, it's sounds like I'm hitting rocks whenever I go over a bump in the road; the suspension sounds extra harsh. I didn't have either of these problems last year.

The lights were on yesterday. My diagnostic computer was completely dead for battery, so I had to charge it up and couldn't check it last night. I charged it up, took it with me to work this morning, and when I got here, I nearly had a coronary.

The error was: ABS/DSC, brake fluid
In a panic I checked the brake fluid resevoir and surely enough it's pretty much empty. I'm about to start shitting bricks; I work an hour away from home so I'm stuck here. Brakes felt fine the whole time, but I'm sure that's about to change...

I'm gonna give my "local" shop that I usually go to a call (about 20 mins away) and see if they can squeeze me in for an emergency service right after work. I'll have to baby it on the way there and not touch the brakes at all. If it's the brake seals again, I'm going to flip shit to the company that provided me the seals.

Yes; I've replaced the seals two or three times already; I lost track, which is pretty sad that I've reached this point to begin with.
I guess we'll see if it's the seals later today...

BP, you drive a 10-year old car - you NEED to have a AAA membership! one tow is worth the membership cost alone.

i have to admit, when i was younger i balked at it. after buying my 1996 Audi S6 though (perhaps it was because we were doing longer trips at that point), i bit the bullet and paid $250/year for a CAA Premiere (same as AAA, but canadian) membership for my wife and i; it has paid for itself 3 or 4 times over at this point. i had the S6 towed home over 200km TWICE, late at night... those would not have been fun nights otherwise (once was a torn coolant hose, can't remember the other). plus you can get discounts on hotel rooms, etc with the membership - and it covers the driver, not the car; so if you are driving/riding in other people's cars, and you need a tow, you're covered.

dang....... i should get a commission from them. :)

They said they actually had numerous BMWs come in with issues in the rear where the salt corroded the brake lines. I don't think I have an issue in the rear though...

BP I find it very unfortunate that you have been having issues with your Performance BBKs. I can understand your frustration with them although it would be nice if you could find a permanent solution to the issues surrounding those BBKs....

The permanent solution is to get another set of BBK's.
Until then, the stockies feel just fine. I do want firmer feeling brakes though... one day. I still have my set of Hawk HP+ pads that I used with my stock calipers, so I can do a track day with these if I need to.

It appears the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions have reached end of life. I have approximately 23,000 miles on my set and cord is now showing in 3 out of 4 tires. Considering these are in the same performance category (according to Tire Rack) as the Pilot Super Sport tires, I think I have gotten fantastic mileage out of them. I've seen others get only about 15k out of their Super Sports, so I'm happy with this mileage. All four are worn pretty evenly since I run a square setup and rotate them every oil change.

That sounds tempting... I do want to learn about that tire but it's too far away to make it a one day trip, so it's unlikely I'll go. Gas, tolls... it's probably better if I just wait 'till reviews come out on it to learn about that tire. :)

They don't sell the tire I want. This is the first time I've ever considered buying the same tire twice, so I'm probably going to buy the S-04's again.

BP, you run a 245/35/18, right? the S-04's are on for $622 right now in that size.

alternatively, have you considered the bfgoodrich g-force sport comp-2's? they don't have them in that size, but they do have a 235/40/18 (they run a bit wide anyway), at $512/set. i've heard some pretty good stuff about this tire, albeit the noise (they have a very square profile).

I can say from experience that the Pilot Super Sports are the best tires I have ever used. Even when on cords, these tire grip! You pay a hefty premium to have a set of tires that won't last 20k miles.... that is if you run in staggered fitment like I do but man are these tires awesome. With that said, I have used Hankooks and now am using Toyo Proxes T1 Sport tires and so far like them. The front set of Toyo's are worn down near to the cord and for a tire that is that worn, they run very quiet and grip just as good as the PSSs do. The Toyo's are much cheaper than the PSSs so I think I will be using these for the time being. I know Botond prefers the S-04 so you will have different people with different preferences. As a "Gerry", I like to drive aggressively and Botond will chime as to how I drive ;) For now I will stay with the Toyo's and eventually replace the Hankooks with Toyo tires :thumbsup

Price-wise? I'd say the Toyo's run close to half the cost of the PSSs so you get a lot of performance for how much you have to shell out to get the tires :thumbsup

So, my right rear shock is leaking. I already had the front right-side replaced a few months ago. Fearing a nightmare of a warranty process, I finally decided to get the process started.

The website states to contact the original place of purchase for warranty claims. Since the place of purchase is a shop that is over 3 hours from me, that wouldn't be ideal. I called Bilstein to inquire further about alternative options. They told me that they can deal with me directly, which is exactly what I wanted to hear! They asked me to send them an email.

So, I have sent an email to Bilstein with my receipt (proof of purchase) and the plan is to send me an advance replacement shock at 50% cost and then send them my defective one. Once it is deemed defective, they will refund me the 50% cost and all will be well with the world. I'm so glad this is this easy...

Some updates:

Recently the windshield was replaced due to a big rock hitting and cracking it. I requested Pilkington OEM glass be installed since the request for OE glass through insurance was denied. I was given a Pilkington sub-brand, which makes their glass in China. The brand received is a PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works) brand windshield with a DOT563 designation, meaning it was produced in China. The quality of this glass is inferior to my old OE glass; there is some rippling that is evident when looking at straight lines through the glass. I brought this to the attention of Safelite, my installer (excellent customer service, BTW), and the manager approved the installation of OE glass!

I dropped off one of my BBS CH wheels to get repaired before my big track weekend. It should be ready tomorrow, so I have one of my Style 68 winter wheels in the back right now. Luckily, it fits over the new Wilwood brakes in the rear just fine! I will have to test the fronts, but they cleared the BMW Performance BBK's fine with a spacer, which was a much bigger (physically) caliper setup, so I don't anticipate issues clearing the Wilwoods.

Thanks Derek! It looks reeeeeeeeally good in person to my eyes, and does actually provide a slight tint for those who like that sort of thing. It's "just enough" for me, though a big downside of having it now is that I really need to replace my window regulator. My driver's window is having a really hard time moving now that the tint is on there, and it seems to keep catching the rubber seal, making it even harder. I can't operate the window until I have money for a new regulator because if it snaps on me then there'll be a problem!

I wonder if the seals on the door can be replaced somehow... I figured I might as well do those too if possible. I'll look it up later to see if there's a part # for them.

i was kidding with you. :)

after spending way too much time looking at all of the rear floor failures in the M3 world, i can understand how it can occur and worn out rear subframe mounts will definitely contribute to the problem - and any kind of driveline vibration invariably will wear out the OE subframe mounts prematurely. they are awfully soft to begin with, though.

besides replacing my rear subframe mounts with AKG poly units that have wide, flat faces, i am filling the rear floor cavity. then i can have peace of mind about it.

We're a little far from Charrie spec, but it's most of the way there!

I have never hosed down the engine bay in the 5 years I've had the car, so it was definitely due for a deeper cleaning. I've attempted to clean the bay once before, but that was literally a "spray and wipe" scenario, which isn't nearly as effective. In this case it was "rinse, spray, rinse, wipe with product". Doing this with a hose was key.

Overall I'm very happy with the results...

I also replaced my windshield washer strainer. I have a feeling this is what was causing all of my washer fluid to leak out. I've been staring at that washer fluid light for a couple of years now and I've gotten tired of seeing it, so it was time to replace. So far so good; the fluid has stayed put the entire drive back from Charrie's place. :)
